JOHN PAUL JONES Autograph Clipped Signature

by Early American

August 29, 2015, 9:00 AM PST

Rancho Santa Fe, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $3,500 - $4,000

Description: AutographsNaval Hero JOHN PAUL JONES Signature ClipJOHN PAUL JONES, (1747-1792). Famous American Naval Officer and Hero.Very Rare, Clipped Signature, “Jno P Jones,” measuring 2.5” x 1”, no date or place, clip from a larger document, Choice Very Fine+. Jones’ signature is one of the scarcest in American naval history. Famous for his historic quote: “I have not yet begun to fight!” John Paul Jones’ signature is written in bold deep brown ink being an excellent example for display. It is nicely penned upon period laid paper and has some faint trivial tone near the bottom. Also included is a copy Color Lithograph of Jones, measuring 6.75” x 8.75” from the engraved colored plate by T.M. Moreau, trimmed at bottom through a facsimile signature.Jones is best remembered for his famous words exclaimed when he refused to surrender his ship the Bon Homme Richard in a fierce battle with a British convoy escorted by the Serapis: “I have not yet begun to fight!” Paul was able to capture the Serapis in one of the most desperate sea battles in naval history. Every American historical Autograph collector worth his or her salt certainly holds John Paul Jones as a major “Key” that is lusted after as being greatly desired. (2 items).John Paul Jones (1747-1792). Born John Paul in Scotland, he first served in British ships, then deserted to America after killing one of his crew (1773). During the American Revolution,Jones was commissioned a Lieutenant in the Continental Navy (December 7, 1775), and was given command of the Alfred (1775), the Providence (1776), and the Ranger (1777).Successes against the British Atlantic shipping during this period earned him the command of the French-donated vessel Duras, renamed Bonhomme Richard as a compliment to Benjamin Franklin (1779). Jones is probably best remembered for his famous words exclaimed when he refused to surrender his ship in a fierce battle with a British convoy escorted by the Serapis: “I have not yet begun to fight!”Paul was able to capture the Serapis in one of the most desperate sea battles in naval history. Though he won the fight, Jones lost his ship, which sank two days later. Jones served in the Russian navy on the Black Sea against the Turkish fleet from 1788-1790, which left his physically and mentally a broken man, and then resided in Paris until his death.

La dite résolution disait ainsi « Resolutions expressive of the sense of Congress of the gallantry and good conduct with which the reputation of the arms of the United States has been sustained by the Major Général Macomb. ». Congressional Medal in honnor of Major General Alexander Macomb (1782-1841) presented by the President of the United State by Congress' request produced by the United States mint commemorating his achievements at the Battle of Plattsburgh on 11 September 1814. The obverse represents the bust of Major General Alexander Macomb in military uniform. The reverse represents a view of the Battle of Plattsburgh with troops crossing the Saranac river in the foreground the fortifications and town in flames with the naval battle in the background diam. 6.4 cm 248g American military hero appointed Commander-in-chief of the United States Army was acclaimed "The Hero of Plattsburgh" after the astounding victory at the Battle of Plattsburgh. Born on April 3 1782 son a military great he started his career with the New York Rangers in 1798. Graduating from the Military Academy in 1802 he was promoted successively to Captain Major Lieutenant Colonel Adjudant general Brigadier Major General in 1819 and then General-in-chief of the Army in 1828. The certificates of appointment bear the signatures of Presidents such as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Great mind and astute strategist Alexander Macomb was the author of "The Practice of Courts Martial" published in 1840 before his death in 1841.At the Battle of Plattsburgh on September 11 1814 General Macomb fought off the British invasion. Using his knowledge of the land and with ingenious manoeuvres the enemy was held off until the victory at Lake Champlain. This battle is one of the most impressive in American history. Only 3 400 troops were deployed against 11 000 of the British allied forces. Being a great strategist the General employed a manoeuvre known as abatis which involves knocking down trees to form a barrier and create a fortification. This was very skilfully executed hence the British numbers diminished rapidly. In recognition for his services the President awarded Major General Macomb with a unique gold medal by the resolution of Congress on November 3 1814 which commemorated this battle. The resolution stated Resolutions expressive of the sense of Congress of the gallantry and good conduct with which the reputation of the arms of the United States has been sustained by the Major General Macomb. The medal was officially awarded to him in 1815 by President of the United States James Madison. Along with the medal is a handwritten letter issued by the United States Department of War dated May 26 1815 and signed by War secretary Alexander J. Dallas (1759-1817). This letter informs General Macomb of the resolution of Congress and his being awarded a gold medal by the President of the United States. Major General Alexander Macomb remains an important figure in American history. A town founded in 1830 was also named after him Macomb McDonough County Illinois. Road names and monuments also pay tribute to Major General Macomb as well as his bronze statue in Detroit and funerary monument at the Congress of Washington. Provenance: by direct descent Susan Watts Macomb (1849-1928). The grand-daughter of Major General Macomb Susan Watts Macomb married Frederic Sears I Grand d'Hauteville. The medal has remained in the family to the present day.

Historic Elaborate Embellished Gold and Silver Inlaid and Relief Engraved Cased Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver with Scrimshawed Grips Inscribed to Major Frederick Hardy 84th Regiment

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 12, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $40,000 - $70,000

Description: Historic Elaborate Embellished Gold and Silver Inlaid and Relief Engraved Cased Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver with Scrimshawed Grips Inscribed to Major Frederick Hardy 84th Regiment Frederick Hardy was an officer in the 84th Regiment of Foot (York and Lancaster Regiment). His career appears to have spanned from 1849 to 1889 based on the dates in the UK National Archive. He began his career as a ensign on November 23, 1849, and advanced to lieutenant on June 6, 1851, captain on November 27, 1857, major on November 21, 1862, and lieutenant colonel on May 5, 1869. The unit's nickname was The Union Rose. The unit was heavily involved in quelling the Indian Mutiny (Sepoy Rebellion) beginning in 1857. In THE NEW ARMY LIST, MILITIA LIST, AND INDIAN CIVIL SERVICE LIST, Col. H. G. Hart wrote, "Lt. Colonel Hardy served as Orderly Officer to Brigadier Russell at the second relief of Lucknow at the Alumbagh and at the siege and capture of Lucknow also present with the 84th Regiment at the relief of Azimghur and pursuit of Koer Sing (mentioned in despatches, Medal with two Clasps)." Only one man of the sixty men detachment of the 84th at Cawnpore survived. The main force, including Hardy, was committed to the defense and recapture of Lucknow. When the 84th finally left Calcutta in 1859 after seventeen years in India, they were saluted from the battery of Fort William. At most one other unit is recorded as having received this honor. After returning to England, they were given calmer stations for twenty-three years in Ireland, Canada, and the Channel Islands. The revolver was manufactured in 1853 and has since been elaborately engraved and inlaid with various floral designs, a Indian man on the left side of the barrel lug with a knife and pistol, and a series of silver studs on the loading lever. Most of the standard Colt markings remain unobscured. It is marked with "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY- " on the top of the barrel, the naval battle scene on the cylinder, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of the frame, and matching serial numbers on the loading lever, wedge, barrel, frame, trigger guard, cylinder, cylinder pin, and back strap. The latter is inscribed "Major Fredk Hardy/84TH Regt" and a "P" is marked on the left side of the back strap obscured by the grips. The "one piece" style grips have scrimshawed scroll designs on the sides. The revolver comes with a case with hunter green lining, an empty Eley Bros. cap tin, several lead balls, an American Flask & Cap Company eagle and martial themed powder flask (matches figure 798 in THE POWDER FLASK BOOK) , and a dual cavity bullet mold. Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1851 BBL: 7 1/2 inch octagon Stock: Gauge: 36 percussion Finish: blue/silver/gold Grips: antique ivory Serial Number: 25088 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine as period custom embellished. The revolver retains 98% plus of the gold, silver, and blue finish. The only noticeable wear is some brighter sections on the on the loading rammer and a couple absent studs on the lever. Otherwise, there is only minor handling and storage marks and some very slight spotting. The silver and brass have an aged patina. The grips are very fine with nicely aged tones, a small age crack on the upper left, and distinct designs. The action remains excellent. The case is very good with minor overall storage wear along with some small stains, fading, and minor tears on the interior. The accessories are fine. This is a beautiful revolver elaborately ornamented and tied to an important era in both the history of the British Empire and India.

Colonial Currency, GA, 1776 Sterling Denominations. 5 Shillings. Crown vignette

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,200

Description: Georgia Currency1776 Georgia Five Shillings With “Crown” VignetteGeorgia. 1776 Sterling Denominations. Five Shillings. “Crown” vignette. Border Type “T.” Apparent restorations. PCGS graded Very Fine-35.Fr. GA-66a. This impressive, premium quality looking Georgia note has four even margins and is quite boldly printed in black on clean off white paper. It has excellent eye appeal. There are four brown signatures and serial number present. The Royal British “Crown” vignette is very sharp in detail. One of the nicer examples of this scarce type we have offered.Colonial and Continental Congress issued currency is one of the greatest fields of collecting within American numismatics. Colonial American paper money was the very first used in the entire Western World. First issued in 1690 Massachusetts, the use of paper money quickly spread to all thirteen British colonies.American history was immensely influenced by the use of this “fiat” paper money as it allowed for an expanded economy and trade between the colonies. The history of paper money is repeated, even today. The very first issued of Massachusetts currency of 1690 had some notes deceptively altered to show higher values, inflation and the rampant printing of both the Colonial and Continental Congress issues led to the Government “bailout” of State debt, huge inflation and the mistrust of paper money as being ultimately “Not Worth A Continental.” Collect this field and learn how history repeats! For additional historic, rarity and value information, I highly recommend acquiring an additional reference book which is considered to be the “Bible” on this field of collecting, “The Early Paper Money of America” by Eric Newman.

Estimated Price: $150,000 - $200,000

Description: A Magnificent and Superb Royal Cased Pair of Lavishly Gold Inlaid Percussion Pistols by Manceaux of Paris Presented to Captain Thomas, Lord Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, by Louis Philippe, King of France -A) Manceaux Target Pistol A Magnificent and Superb Royal Cased Pair of Lavishly Gold Inlaid Percussion Pistols by Manceaux of Paris Presented to Captain Thomas, Lord Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, by Louis Philippe, King of France -A) Manceaux Target Pistol This is an absolutely outstanding cased pair of exhibition quality percussion pistols extensively inlaid with relief chiseled gold in incredibly artistic elaborate designs covering nearly all of the metal surfaces complimented by equally intricate raised relief carving on the stocks. The pair are both marked in relief gold as follows on the top flat of the octagon barrels "Donne’ par le ROI des Francais a Mr. le Capitaine COCHRAN. 1843.” In English: "Given by the KING of France to Mr (Monsieur). Captain COCHRAN. 1843". The barrels also have small signature "MANCEAUX” in gold on the upper left flats and "A PARIS" on the upper right flats. The latter marking is executed in platinum to contrast with the former markings and the extensive florals and other designs are executed in gold. The gold inlays include two superbly rendered relief dragons on each lock, relief crowned lions on the forend caps, relief crowned demonic style faces on the trigger guards and various floral and scroll patterns all in pure gold. The designs have textured backgrounds. These extraordinary pistols ordered by the King of France from the royal workshop at Tulle headed by Jules Manceaux, the armory’s finest gunsmith, exhibit the very finest quality throughout testifying to King Louis Philippe’s regard for his old friend, Captain Cochrane, an extraordinary figure second only to Horatio Nelson in the pantheon of English naval heroes. The Louis Philippe/Lord Cochrane Manceaux pistols differ from all other similar gold decorated pistols being actually inlaid with gold. Nearly all other sets known by Devisme, Gastinne Renette, LePage, and others are etched and then thinly damascened with gold amalgam. The King’s presentation pistols are decorated with true gold inlay. The barrels feature post and notch sights, spurred trigger guards, and superbly carved highly figured European walnut stocks with coordinating floral pattern with intertwined heads and flutes. The case is a work of art in its own right with gold and silver designs on the exterior including a heavy raised relief cast and chased silver presentation plaque bearing the same inscription as appears on the barrels except in two lines and all capital letters. The interior has some pressed designs on the velvet lining along with gold motifs and "MANCEAUX./A PARIS." Inside the case is a cleaning rod, ram rod, wooden mallet, round wooden container with two additional percussion nipples, ball puller, a wrench with gold collar, a gold embellished bullet mold, and a gold inlaid powder flask. The designs on the latter three accessories match the designs on the pistols. Captain Cochrane is known as the real Master and Commander. His exploits are so remarkable as to be beyond belief. Cochrane was the British naval officer who proposed saturation bombing and chemical warfare during the Napoleonic Wars. in 1818 following a false conviction after connection with the London Stock Exchange scandal of 1814 Cochrane left England and became a fantastically successful mercenary admiral for Chile, Peru, Brazil, and Greece. He was pardoned in 1832 by King William IV and inherited the title Earl of Dundonald. In 1798 the Duke of Orleans (later King Louis Philippe) and his brothers the Duke de Montpensier, and Count Beaujolais were fleeing the terrors of the French Revolution aboard a small and uncomfortable American vessel. Captain Cochrane invited the French royals to enjoy the relative comfort of His Majesty’s frigate. While attempting to board the much larger frigate the Duke of Orleans lost his grip and plunged into the sea. The Duke swam to the stern and a boat was lowered “Which rescued him from his unwelcome bath”. On the 31st of March 1798 Captain Cochrane landed the three French royals in Havana harbor. The future King and the Captain remained friends and undoubtedly after Lord Cochrane was pardoned these magnificent pistols were ordered by King Louis Philippe as a token of esteem. Manufacturer: French Model: Percussion BBL: 10 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 50 Finish: gold Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Excellent. The pistol retains 98% plus of their original gold inlays which remain pristine and crisp with their relief features intact. The background is “French Gray" in most areas and the few non-embellished surfaces are mostly bright metal. The exceptional stocks have some slight pressure marks and a few slight scratches but is otherwise near new. The actions function flawlessly. The pistols have almost certainly never been fired and likely handled very little over their 172 year lives thus far. The case has some minor hairline cracks on the exterior but is otherwise in very fine condition with minor storage type wear and some pressure marks and fading on the interior. The Accessories are very fine overall. It is clear that this set has been well cared for and exchanged hands very few times since it was originally presented by King Louis-Philippe to Captain Cochrane. They are simply one of the most splendid Royal presentation sets known in or out of a museum and it is doubtful whether an opportunity to purchase a pair of such quality with an equally important history will come along for many years. B) Manceaux Target Pistol As discussed in A. Manufacturer: French Model: Percussion BBL: 10 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 50 Finish: gold Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: As A.

Indeed, after the battle, British General Henry Clinton remarked in his diary that "A few more such victories would have surely put an end to British dominion in America."

Nelson having spent most of the summer cruising the western Mediterranean looking for Admiral Bruey's Toulon fleet, finally came upon it as it lay at anchor in Aboukir Bay following the disembarkation of the army with wich Napoleon was to conquer Egypt. Brueys had chosen a strong position in a well-protected anchorage although Nelson had the avantage of surprise. More significantly, it was already six o'clock in the evening when Nelson sigthed the French and, with only two hours of daylight remaining.Brueys was confident that any attack would have to be postponed until the next day, by wich time his own fleet would be ready. Nelson, with typical daring, amazed both his captains as well as the French by ordering his ships into the Bay where they engaged the enemy in a spirited action wich lasted most of the night. The decisive moment came just after 10 o'clock when theFrench flagship, the huge 120-gun L'Orient, blew up with a tremendous explosion and, when dawn broke, the French annihilation became apparent with nine of their badly damaged ships captured and another four completely destroyed. It was a glorious victory for Nelson, one of the greatest in British naval history, and the one which brought thim the pinnacle of his career.Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson

This is the very finest set we have seen and offered. (2 items).Thomas Truxtun (or Truxton) (February 17, 1755 – May 5, 1822) was an American Naval Officer who rose to the rank of Commodore.Born near Hempstead, New York on Long Island, Truxtun had little formal education before joining the crew of the British merchant ship Pitt at the age of twelve. By the time he was twenty, however, his talents had garnered him the command of his own vessel, the Andrew Caldwell. He operated as a Privateer during the American Revolutionary War, Commanding several Naval Ships: Congress, Independence, Mars and St. James. Truxtun was highly successful in capturing enemy ships during this period, not once suffering a defeat. After the war he returned to the merchant marine, where he remained for twelve years, and in 1786 commanded one of the very First American ships to engage in trade with China, the “Canton,” operating from Philadelphia.Truxtun was appointed captain in the United States Navy in 1794, and during the Quasi-War with France was in command of the USS Constellation. Previously, he had overseen its construction with Silas Talbot, and, after a rank dispute, was placed in charge of the ship by President Washington. He was promoted to commodore and met with considerable success. His victories, perhaps most notably that over the French vessel L'Insurgente, made Truxtun a hero of the time. Consequently, he was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal on March 29, 1800, becoming the eighth recipient of that body’s "highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions."During this period, however, Truxtun was involved in a dispute over rank with Richard Dale. Truxtun took command of the warship USS President for a few months in 1800, soon after retiring from the Navy and locating first in Perth Amboy, New Jersey and later in Philadelphia. He was offered command during the First Barbary War in 1801 but refused, settling firmly into retirement. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for the United States House of Representatives in 1810, and in 1816 was elected sheriff of Philadelphia County, serving a four-year term. He also published several books, well-known at the time, covering navigation and naval tactics. He is buried at Christ Church Burial Ground. (From Wikipedia)
