William Hamilton of Bangour, poet and Jacobite - Strange, Sir Robert

Lot 143: William Hamilton of Bangour, poet and Jacobite - Strange, Sir Robert

by Lyon & Turnbull

May 13, 2015, 11:00 AM GMT

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £100 - £150

Description: William Hamilton of Bangour, poet and Jacobite - Strange, Sir Robert William Hamilton of Bangour (1704-54) engraved by Sir Robert Strange, after Jean-Baptiste Descamps (1706-91), Rouen: 1747-8, 23 x 27.5cm including mount (not laid-down)

Condition Report: There has been much confusion between this image of Hamilton of Bangour, which shows him in his dressing gown at a desk ornamented with thistles, and the better-known portrait by Gavin Hamilton which was also engraved by Strange at about the same time. The latter shows the poet in idealised classical profile, his flowing hair bound with a fillet. Two different versions exist, facing both right and left. This latter image was used in eighteenth-century editions of Hamilton's poetical works.
