Lot 182: Lincoln Charter, Hawisa sister of Stephen de Bello Campo [Beauchamp] has...

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

July 17, 2014, 11:00 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £750 - £1,000

Description: Lincoln (Ranulf (III) de Blundeville, sixth earl of Chester and first earl of Lincoln, magnate, 1170-1232) Charter, Hawisa sister of Stephen de Bello Campo [Beauchamp] has granted, quitclaimed and presented to Ranulf Earl of Chester & Lincoln, all that piece [of land] which has come to me from my brother in the manor of Certeleg [Chartley, Staffordshire] with its appurtenances, woods, pastures, ponds, mills etc., witnesses: Walter de Bello campo, Hugh de Mortimer, Fulk Fitz Warin, Philip de Orreby, justice of Chester, Stephen de Segrove, Ralf de Mutton, Alured [Alfred] de Soligny, Ralf de Picheforde, Robert de Esselnit seneschal of Duddel and Peter the Clerk (this document probably composed by Peter the clerk), manuscript in Latin, on vellum, 12 lines, later dorse on verso, a few very small holes not affecting text, folds, slightly browned, lacks seal, 85 x 158mm., [ between 1217-29]. Ranulf de Blundeville grew up as a royal ward in the reign of Henry II. To further his policy in Brittany, Henry arranged for de Blundeville to marry Constance (c. 1161-1201), daughter of Conan (IV), duke of Brittany and widow of Geoffrey, son of Henry II. Thereafter de Blundeville was a strong royalist and supported Richard I, John and Henry III, during his minority and after. After the death of Richard I in 1199 he supported John in his claim to the throne and Constance divorced him. He thereupon made a second Breton marriage alliance and fought for John against Arthur. De Blundeville was one of the few barons who sided with John against the granting of Magna Carta and was prominent with William Marshall in the defence of Henry III's rights. He built up his power base in Cheshire, building the castle of Beeston and this deed shows him consolidating his hold on poperty in an adjacent county. The earls of Chester had owned Chartley since the 1090's and in the 1220's Ranulf de Blundeville rebuilt the castle in stone. This document probably relates to the refurbishment of the castle.

Lot 190: Gregory Bond, by Richard of Poncchardounn [Pontchardon] to the Abbot and...

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

July 17, 2014, 11:00 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £300 - £400

Description: Gregory (of Norbury [Northbury], ninth abbot of Stanlaw and first abbot of Whalley, fl. 1292-1309-10) Bond, by Richard of Poncchardounn [Pontchardon] to the Abbot and Abbey of Whalley, for £10, manuscript in Latin, on vellum, 6 lines, lacks seal, folds, browned, 40 x 192mm., 1303. Whalley Abbey, the second richest abbey in Lancashire was founded in 1296 when the monks of Stanlaw Abbey moved from their previous location near Ellesmere Port, in Cheshire. Originally founded in 1172 in a flood prone area on the banks of the river Mersey, it became clear that the site was untenable, being inundated regularly at certain times of the year. The monks moved to Whalley when their patrons, the de Lacy family, Earls of Lincoln offered them new lands from their own estates in Lancashire. This bond may have been an attempt by Gregory of Norbury to raise money for the new building work.
