New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $500 - $750

Description: BOB NOORDA (1927-2010) PER L'INVERNO IL PNEUMATICO / PIRELLI. 1953. 39x26 3/4 inches, 99x68 cm. Riccordi, Milan. Condition A- / B+: minor repaired tears at edges; light creases and abrasions in margins and image. Dutch-born and educated, Bob Noorda moved to Milan and shortly after became the art director for Pirelli. In Milan he met Massimo Vignelli with whom he opened an international design studio, Unimark. He is perhaps most famous for his 1966 redesigning of the New York Subway signage, making him the man responsible for the colored circles with numbers denoting specific lines that commuters still see to this day. This poster for Pirelli is a classic example of post-war Italian modernist design.

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,000

Description: KEIICHI TANAAMI (1936- ) P.B. GRAND PRIX. 1968. 41x28 3/4 inches, 104x73 cm. Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions in margins and image; hand-signed and dated by the artist in ink. Silkscreen. Paper. Throughout his career Tanami has been a graphic designer, illustrator, animator and experimental filmmaker. He also designed album covers for the Monkees and Jefferson Airplane. In 1975 he became the first Art Director of Japanese edition of Playboy Magazine and he is currently a dean at the Kyoto University of Design and Art. This is one in a series of posters with similar imagery and it contains many recurring motifs from elsewhere in his oeuvre. A whimsical psychedelic design, this poster is both sexy and quite current with pop-culture of the era, depicting the Beatles, whose Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album had only come out in 1967. Blow up p. 85.

Vercasson, Paris "This is Cappiello's first poster for the Lajaunie breath freshening candies that are 'indispensable to smokers' . . . His emerging style of bright colors and flat planes is already evident in the woman's red hair, green dress and the brown background" (Cappiello/Rennert, p. 43). "The pharmacist, Léon Lajaunie, set up his pharmacy in Toulouse. After developing several invigorating elixirs, he turned to cachou, as an aromatic for perfuming the breath whose strong flavor covered smoker's breath" (Health Posters, p. 169). This is the Spanish-language version.

by Poster Auctions International, Inc

May 4, 2014, 11:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $40,000 - $50,000

Description: Artist: BOOKS AND PERIODICALS Size: 12 1/4 x 16 in./31 x 40.5 cm Published by Librairie Chaix, Paris The complete set of 240 numbered plates, plus sixteen supplements in five bound volumes in original Berthon-designed binding. This series of original lithographic reproductions of posters - four plates were mailed to subscribers each month for five years, with sixteen supplemets - crowned the affichomanie at the end of the 19th century. Alain Weill makes two interesting observations about this series. Its appeal, in part, was due to its manageable size: "At the time posters posed a problem which, moreover, has still not been solved: how to keep and enjoy a collection consisting of very large prints which one has to preserve rolled or flat in some cabinet . . . [This book] provided a reduction of the most valued and consequently the most widely known posters, thus enabling collectors and other interested people to examine quickly and easily the main works of the current advertising production." Weill notes that one month's offerings (4 prints) could be had at the same price as an original poster by Lautrec, Mucha or the other greats of the poster pantheon: "This is not at all surprising since the posters were printed in great quantities on ordinary paper and, to boot, the one-time art and plate costs were assumed by the company whose product it advertised; the dealers paid printers only for the overrun they wished to acquire. Hence, we must consider it normal that Les Maitres de l'Affiche, specially produced by means of lithography on quality paper, was offered for sale at the price of an original poster. The people did not perceive these two types of products as being in competition. They were infatuated with small prints and with this kind of compilation" (Maitres/Images Graphique edition, pp. 4 & 5).
