Description: 1801 PHILADELPHIA DEED - Israel Israel, High Sheriff of Philadelphia, Writ of Fieri Facias on sheepskin parchment with attached seal of the City and County of Philadelphia Enrollment Office, seal of the Prothonotary Office, Philadephia County and wax seal of Israel Israel. Signed by Israel Israel (twice), witnessed by J.H. Baker & Adm. Clampffer, docketed verso by Charles Biddle. Land levied in Deed from estate of Samuel Cowperthwait in the value of $375, for a plot of land on Fourth Street, District of Southwick. The parchment is folded, 14" x 24", generally good condition. Israel Israel (1742-1822) served one term in the Pennsylvania State Senate 1787-1798; became High Sheriff of Philadelphia in 1800 and in 1816 became Justice of the Peace for Philadelphia's 5th District. During the Revolutionary War he was captured and tried for treason aboard a British ship, was saved by giving the Masonic distress sign. Charles Biddle (1745-1821) was elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Executive Council in 1776, was Vice-President under President Benjamin Franklin. Biddle joined Captain Cowperthwait's Company of Quaker Light Infantry in 1776. He was Prothonotary of the Common Pleas Court of Philadelphia 1791-1809.

Signatories are George and Cordelia Moore, George and Ann King and Will Barley, all of whom seem to have been related or intermarried in some tangled relationship, each received five Shillings from John Eversall, William Barker and William Bennet of Stevenage. 28 3/4" x 29", with tax seal, in silver shadow box frame with blue velvet lining, OS: 36" x 36". The text reads "Campobello, October 13th, 1870; The undersigned have known the bearer John Francis as Governor of the Passamaquoddy tribe of Indians for more than thirty years, he is now going to send a Nefhous (sic) to a convention to be holden (sic) at Kanawaaga (sic) in Canada for the purpose of renewing their treaty of Peace respectfully Solicit free passages in steam boats and cars as was/were granted them on similar occasions. (signed with wax seal) J. Robinson-Owen, LP, MLC; Robert Ker (?); H. Emil Cousen (?), Eastport. Joseph Robinson-Owen was a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) of the Province of New Brunswick, and Legislative Parliament (LP) of Canada.
