This very early 5 inch gauge model was restored by Mr Richard Down of Hythe in Kent between 2007 and 2012 with a new Western Steam boiler fitted at that time. The boiler has subsequently only been test run since being installed. The silver soldered boiler with fittings including sight glass, pressure gauge, regulator, direction control, drains with associated pipework, lever operated drop door to firebox and fitted twin safety valves. The chassis has twin outside cylinders having drains and fitted with inside Stephenson s reverse gear, ratchet oiler system, whistle, injector and fitted brake gear. The locomotive is finished in crimson lined livery with cab - side plate 1914, fitted handrails, steps, lamp irons, vacuum hoses and linkages. The double bogie tender of Greenly design influence having fitted hand feed pump and finished in matching livery with fitted hand rails, steps, vacuum hose and linkage. Total model length 175cm. Cab width 22cm. * LOCOMOTIVE 1914 - A FINE HISTORIC 1in SCALE MODEL (5in Gauge) This 4-6-2 Pacific engine is probably the oldest working 5-inch gauge locomotive in the country, and it comes with a long and very interesting history. The loco was originally conceived and designed in 1911 as a pacific tank engine by a Mr. Harold C Trimnell, who arranged for Mr. C Baldwin of Camberwell to build the model. Exhibiting a very Greenly-esque look, details of the locomotive s construction, including photos and some drawings, were published in Henry Greenly s Models, Railways and Locomotives magazines in December 1912 and January 1913. It appears that Mr. Trimnell knew Henry Greenly personally. The original boiler was to a Greenly Bissell type design and the loco was fitted with Stephenson s inside valve motion. The 5½ driving and coupled wheels were Stuart Turner castings. The building of the loco to 5 gauge is unusual for the period, as virtually all 1in scale models utilized the 4¾ gauge at that time. On completion of the model, Henry Greenly visited Mr. Trimnell s railway and pronounced the locomotive to be a successful running engine capable of pulling 2 adults and running two actual miles on one firing. A later article stated that the running distance was 1½ to 1¾ miles, which was still very good for the time. After running the loco for 18 months or so, it appears that Mr Trimnell wanted a more powerful engine with increased water capacity so that the loco could haul more passengers and run for 2 miles. He therefore called on Henry Greenly for his help, and Greenly made a further visit to Mr. Trimnel s railway in 1914. This famous miniature locomotive man, to use his own words, roughed out a design for the rebuild of the engine, converting it to a tender pacific loco utilizing a large proportion of the original model including the frames and wheels. A new tender would be required and a large double bogie pattern was proposed by Greenly, similar to the current Caledonian Railway design used for the Dunalastair III locomotives. At about the same time, Henry Greenly had been designing the Bassett-Lowke 15 gauge Little Giant locomotive, and the tender and some of the features of the rebuild look very similar to this larger iconic miniature loco type. Further design drawings were prepared based on Greenly s specification, utilizing the front portion of the frames, and a new, larger Belpaire boiler with a wide firebox specified; also larger cylinders. A number of novelties were also incorporated, including working sanding apparatus. The rebuilding work was again undertaken by Mr. Baldwin, who by that time, had teamed up with a certain Mr. Willis to form the well-known model-making firm of the time, Baldwin and Willis . The end result was a sturdy, powerful locomotive, which was further described in Greenly s July and October 1914 editions of Models, Railways and Locomotives magazine. Two volumes of these magazines which include the relevant 1912, 13 & 14 magazines are included in the sale. When the present owner came across the loco in 2006, it had clearly done a lot of running, so it must have been a successful performer. Recognising this one-off engine from pictures in Greenly s Magazines and Model Railways Book, the present owner set about finding an engineer with the knowledge and skills to rebuild and refurbish the model to its original glory. Model Engineer, Richard Down was chosen to undertake this special task. A Greenly fanatic, Richard lives in Hythe, Kent, and in the past has played a key role in the repair and rebuilding of a number of the Greenly designed 15 gauge locomotives on the nearby Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. With his extensive knowledge of Greenly locomotives from a design, construction and finish viewpoint, Richard set about rebuilding the locomotive. This included fitting a new boiler manufactured by Western Steam to the same external dimensions as the original, but with improved steaming capacity. No monies were spared in achieving, as far as possible, the original condition of the locomotive and Richard also undertook the painting of the loco in a typical Bassett Lowke style, including the lining. On completion, the loco was test steamed, when it proved to be very powerful. It has not been used since, being retained as a prized exhibit to date by the present owner. This life of this 104-year old locomotive spans a link with the very earliest days of model railway engineering. The involvement of one of the best-known model engineers of that time in the evolution of this locomotive makes this model stand out as something quite special, whether it should be acquired as an iconic static exhibit or a useful working historic locomotive.

Exceptional, One-of-a-Kind, Engraved and Gold Banded Waffenfabrik Steyr Rolling Block Sporting Rifle

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 11, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,500

Description: Exceptional, One-of-a-Kind, Engraved and Gold Banded Waffenfabrik Steyr Rolling Block Sporting Rifle This handsome rolling block rifle is believed to have been the only rolling block produced by Waffenfabrik Steyr. It is engraved with attractive German style scroll and border engraving patterns on the action and buttplate along with some coordinating designs on the screws. It has open style blade front and folding ladder rear sights. The hammer has the Norwegian style safety "trigger" that allows the action to open. This mechanism prevents the breech from blowing open in the case of a ruptured case or other failure that might cause the standard Remington action to blow open. The top of the blued octagon barrel has "WAFFENFABRIK STEYR." inlaid in gold. A thin gold band is also inlaid at the breech. The action and remaining components are casehardened. The serial number is marked on the front of the action and a matching partial serial number is on the right side of the trigger. It is fitted with a checkered walnut forearm and straight wrist stock with large, slightly rollover cheekpiece and lightly curved carbine style buttplate. European style sling swivels are mounted to the bottom of the barrel and buttstock. Consignor states once a part of the framed single shot collection on Jack Appel. Manufacturer: Steyr Model: Rolling Block BBL: 29 inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 9.5x47 R Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 1578 Class: Antique Condition: Excellent. The rifle retains 95% plus of the original polished, deep blue finish on the barrel, 99% plus of the gold lettering, and strong case colors. There is some minor edge wear overall, handling/storage marks, and some patches of minor oxidation. The wood is very good with sharp checkering and mostly smooth surfaces aside from some slight marks and scratches. There are chips absent at the junction with the upper tang and a slight crack on the right side of the forend. The action is excellent.

Winchester Model 1876 Express Rifle with Full Nickel-Plated Finish and Deluxe Style Stock with Madis Letter

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 11, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $18,000 - $27,500

Description: Winchester Model 1876 Express Rifle with Full Nickel-Plated Finish and Deluxe Style Stock with Madis Letter Winchester Model 1876 rifle chambered for the .50-95 Winchester Express cartridge manufactured in 1878. The rifle has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover rail and dust cover with oval, "thumb-print" finger guide. The rifle has a special order full nickel plated finish and "XX" deluxe, fancy grain stock and forearm with checkered panels. The barrel has a standard nickel plated sporting style front sight and blued sporting style rear sight. The crescent butt plate has a sliding brass trap. The butt trap contains a four-piece jointed steel cleaning rod. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. "50 CAL. EXPRESS" is hand-engraved on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The top of the dust cover is hand-engraved: "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/.50 CAL. 95 GRS." in two lines. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL. 1876." in fancy letters. The serial number "7746" is located on the lower tang behind the lever latch. The rifle is complete with two hand-written letters from the late author and Winchester expert George Madis. The letters give a detailed analysis of the rifle and state: "I have carefully examined this fine rifle, inside and out, and have determined it is original and correct as made by Winchester". The letters also state that records from the Cody Firearms Museum list this rifle as "Rifle, Express, Octagon barrel and a plain trigger" and indicate that it was shipped from the Winchester factory on May 13, 1879. The letter further states that the hand engraved markings on the barrel and dust cover are correct for early production Model 1876 Express rifles. The Madis letter also states that examination of the rifle indicates that it may have been used in cartridge development at Winchester before being nickel plated and stocked with "XX" walnut for a special order. The combination of a 50-95 Express chambering, nickel plated finish and checkered, fancy grain stock and forearm is rare. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1876 BBL: 26 inch Stock: walnut Gauge: 50-95 Winchester Express Finish: nickel Grips: Serial Number: 7746 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine as partially refinished (wood) and upgraded possibly by factory to deluxe configuration. The rifle retains at least 90% of the period, possibly factory nickel plated finish. Finish wear is confined to some flaking on the lower forward edge of the receiver at the junction with the stock. The sides of the receiver, side plates and edges of the barrel show the first traces of potential flaking. The hand engraved and roll-stamped markings on the barrel, dust cover and receiver tang are crisp. The stock and forearm have been professionally refinished to new condition and have a beautiful semi-gloss finish. The checkering is extremely sharp. Whatever the explanation, this is still a true 50 Express Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle that would adorn any collection!

Scarce U.S. Martially Inspected Remington Model 1865 Navy Rolling Block Pistol with Experimental Brass 1870 Ordnance Department Dated

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 13, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $2,750 - $4,250

Description: Scarce U.S. Martially Inspected Remington Model 1865 Navy Rolling Block Pistol with Experimental Brass 1870 Ordnance Department Dated "Pattern Guard" The Remington Model 1865 pistols were manufactured from 1866 to 1870. Approximately 6,500 were produced. The majority were designed for the .50 caliber rimfire cartridge but some, such as this example, were either adapted for centerfire by Remington at the request of the Ordnance Department by swapping the breechblocks. Many were converted to "Model 1867s" in the 1870s by converting them for centerfire ammunition, shortening the barrels, and changing the spur trigger out for a traditional trigger and trigger guard. This example is a prototype which is a transition between the 1866 and the 1867. It retains the original spur trigger and full length barrel but is fitted with a brass trigger guard marked "PATTERN GUARD./ORDER. JANY.28.1870./ORD DEPT. U.S.N.Y.W./F.M.R." The markings indicate this alteration was done by order of the Ordnance Department at the U.S. Naval Yard in Washington, D.C., and inspected by Cdr. Francis M. Ramsey. The barrel has the anchor marking. The left side of the frame has the two-line patent information, and the right side has the "P/F.C.W" inspection mark. A matching "FCW" cartouche is on the left side of the one piece grip. According to the information discussed in "Remington Rolling Block Pistols" by Jerry Landskron, both the Naval Yards in D.C. and at Norfolk were involved in these brass trigger guard conversions. Remington was actually responsible for the alterations using guards supplied by the Ordnance Department. Examples of these scarce pistols are pictured on page 112 and 113 of the above book. The author notes that only twelve pistols with the brass trigger guard are known and most of these are not marked. This example has the serial number on the bottom of the barrel but not on the frame. Manufacturer: Remington Arms Inc Model: Rolling Block BBL: 8 1/2 inch round Stock: Gauge: 50 CF Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: walnut Serial Number: 1605 Class: Antique Condition: Good. The pistol has a brown patina overall with some oxidation and minor marks. The wood is good with lightly visible cartouche, mild handling wear and some small dings and chips. The action is fine. Most of the markings are clear. This Remington rolling block pistol variant is extremely rare and are missing in all but a select few U.S. martial collections. Do not miss this opportunity!
