Description: Manner of Meindert Hobbema (Dutch, 1638-1709) Landscape with Two Hunters Pausing on Path Near a Small Watermill Possible faint signature l.l. Oil on cradled panel, 28 x 38 1/2 in. (71.0 x 98.0 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. The lot is accompanied by a photo certificate issued by G Franz Muller, dated May 25, 1933, that suggests an attribution to Meindert Hobbema and provenance through the collection of Baron van Zuylen, Holland. However, high resolution photographs of the painting were recently reviewed by Fred G. Meijer of the Netherlands Institute for Art History, who suggests the painting is actually a 19th-century imitation after Hobbema, possibly of English origin. It is not thought to be a direct copy, but generally inspired by Hobbema's landscapes.

(35.9 x 61.3cm) provenance: /spanPrivate Collection, Memphis, Tennessee. note:/span One of the preeminent landscapists of the Dutch 'Golden Age,' Salomon van Ruysdael was part of a family of landscape painters, including his brother Isaack van Ruisdael, his son, Jacob Salomonszoon and his nephew, Jacob van Ruisdael. While Salomon traveled throughout the Netherlands, painting scenes in Utrecht, Dordrecht, Rhenen, Leiden and Arnheim, he spent his entire career in Haarlem. He entered the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1623 and became the head of the Guild in 1648. His first river views were painted circa 1628, with early works characterized by a thinly painted, restrained and somewhat monochromatic palette. Later works are bolder and more brilliant in color. Though van Ruysdael painted a small number of still lifes, he remains best known for his landscapes, townscapes and riverscapes - as typified by the present painting.

Jan van Goyen (1596-1656), Follower, Town by the Water, 17th C.

Lot 19: Jan van Goyen (1596-1656), Follower, Town by the Water, 17th C.

by Auctionata

January 26, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €3,600 - €4,500

Description: Oil on cradled panelHolland, 2nd half 17th centuryFollower of Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) - Dutch painter and draftsmanDimensions: 72.5 x 104.5 cmProvenance: Private collection, Rome Picturesque view of an idyllic waterfront town; paintings by followers of van Goyen fetch up to €14,000 on the international auction marketJan van Goyen was famously influential on the landscape painters of his century. His tonal quality was a feature that many imitated. In the present work, a follower of the Dutch painter depicted a view of a fairy-tale town by the water. Below a seemingly endless sky of moving river with different boats is animated. In van Goyen's typical manner, the present work features a restrained palette, which is however highly differentiated in its tonality. The moist Dutch air seems almost palpable to the viewer and the latter's gaze gets lost in the tranquility of the scene. The board is torn horizontally and has been restored. There are retouchings to the sky, the edges and the water with partly retouched craquelure. The frame shows minor losses. The framed work measures 93.5 x 125.5 cm, the panel measures 72.5 x 104.5 cm.Jan van Goyen (1596-1656)Jan van Goyen received his artistic training form c. 1606 to 1618; his teachers were, amongst others, Coenraet van Schilperoort and Isaac van Swanenburg in Leiden, Willem Gerritsz in Hoorn and Esaias van de Velde in Haarlem. As a young artist he had also travelled to France. In 1618, van Goyen became a master in his birthplace Leiden. From 1632 he was also active in The Hague; here was not only appointed member of the Guild of St. Luke, but also became its ombudsman. Today, van Goyen is regarded as one of the most important Dutch landscape painters of the 17th century. His works can be found in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden.
