From Baccarat: "Its unexpected and avant-garde silhouette reinvents expectations of design and reconfigures the possibilities for creating a compelling floral arrangement. The open cylinder of Clear crystal cradles the floral assembly and keeps it carefully in place, yet still gives the plants plenty of room to breathe. Moreover, this vase makes it possible to place a bouquet on the table and still be able to see the person sitting on the opposite side. It is both a conversation piece and a work of impeccable craftsmanship." Height: 4 1/2" Width: 7" Depth: 16"

A wooden sculpture depicting Vaisravana on the Snow Lion China, Yunnan, 18th Century

Lot 209: A wooden sculpture depicting Vaisravana on the Snow Lion China, Yunnan, 18th Century

by Florence Number Nine

July 19, 2014, 11:00 AM CET

Florence, Italy

Estimated Price: €4,000 - €5,000

Description: A large and important wooden sculpture lacquered in bright polychrome depicting the Lokapala Vaisravana, seated on the Snow Lion. The figure, portrayed in the traditional combat armour with complex helmet, shows an exceptional and formal preciousness that can be seen in the use of pate de verre for the eyes (the irises are an usual, very light hazelnut colour), to the insertion of reddish brown hair for the beard and the lacquer work of the belt and shoes that seems so very similar to leather, and the numerous elements carved in relief, with lacquered silver gilt leaf "mecca" technique. The work was produced in the 18th century in the province of Yunnan, in Southern China, already well-known as the cradle of ancient civilisation  of great artistic fecundity (Dian, Nanzhao, and the famous Kingdom of Dali).  It is the product of a prodigious artistic syncretism, in which the stylistic dictates of the Celestial Empire are combined with elements imported from neighbouring Burma and Vietnam and also the Himalayas, to give a completely new and autonomous style to an art, with its own cultural identity. The wooden sculptures from the district of Yunnan, also thanks to the turbulent historical events that have characterised it, are very rarely on the market. h 70 cm

Antique Mexican Retablo - San Jose

Lot 251: Antique Mexican Retablo - San Jose

by ArtemisGallery LIVE

July 23, 2014, 8:00 AM PST

Erie , CO, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $600

Description: Mexico, ca. 1800 CE. A colorful antique painting on tin depicting San Jose. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. This example shows St. Joseph in his role as the ideal father, gently cradling the Christ Child in his arms. He is dressed in the typical green and yellow robes, and he holds a flowering staff. Jesus clutches a tiny crucifix in his right hand, and rays of light emanate from the heads of both. 14" x 10"

Condition Report: Areas of loss, warping, and rust, as is typical with antique tin.
