Pre-Civil War Percussion Conversion Rifle

by ArtemisGallery LIVE

May 12, 2016, 8:00 AM PST

Erie , CO, USA

Estimate: $900 - $1,200

Description: United States, early 19th century CE. This is a percussion conversion rifle with wood and iron components and leather wrappings around the stock and barrel. In the 1840s, this rifle was converted from the flintlock to the percussion firing system. The flash pan was removed and a nipple adde; the hammer was bent to strike the nipple. Someone has put some personal marks onto the stock, but sadly there are no stamps to tell us the name of the rifle's manufacturer. In 1840, the US Army had made the decision to change over to the superior percussion style, and, after evaulation, realized that they had roughly 600,000 muskets and rifles requiring the conversion; their weapon stock ranged from contemporary to pre-1812. Much of this work was done in the National Armories at Harper's Ferry and in Springfield, often by contractors. For example, there was a contract to a Mr Hewes and Phillips who converted (or at least submitted a bill for converting) 20,000 1816 muskets to the percussion system. Weapons like these went on to be used in conflicts in the West during the 1850s and during the Civil War. Size: 40" L x 4.75" W (101.6 cm x 12.1 cm) Provenance: Ex-Galleria Eleni, Chicago All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #113671

Condition Report: Expected wear, especially to stock and leather components; unable to fire due to rusting of components.

A 10-BORE PERCUSSION SERVICE-PISTOL, MODEL '1850 SWEDISH CAVALRY SHOT-PISTOL', serial no. 16,

by Holt's Auctioneers

June 30, 2016, 10:00 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimate: £300 - £500

Description: A 10-BORE PERCUSSION SERVICE-PISTOL, MODEL '1850 SWEDISH CAVALRY SHOT-PISTOL', serial no. 16, dated for 1852, with round tapering iron 12in. barrel, bead fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight, moulded nipple-mount, plain slightly radiused bar-action lock stamped with the date beneath a a crowned letter 'C', plain hammer, distinctive walnut half-stock with coarsely chequered butt, iron back-strap with key-way for attaching a shoulder-stock, regimental markings stamped to the underside of the fore-end, brass furniture including butt-cap, trigger-guard, side plate and nose-cap, no provision for ramrod Other Notes: These large Swedish cavalry pistols were a true modular pistol-carbine system. The shape is very distinctive due to the profile of the grip and are easily recognised by the coarse chequered butt with the moulded extension into the trigger guard and were designed expressly for use with a saddle holster. Two pistols were carried, one had a rifled barrel with four grooves, the other was smoothbore as represented here. The pistols were paired and would have had matching numbers. Both had the iron back strap cut for a stock extension which when attached produced a rifled or smoothbore carbine. The rifled pistols were .58in. calibre and fired a flat based Tamisier bullet while the smoothbore pistol was loaded with six lead balls of about .38 diameter. The two pistols combined gave the cavalryman a choice of range and accuracy or close range effectiveness against massed bodies of troops in either pistol or carbine format. A double ended loading rod for loading both pistols was kept separately on the saddle.
