Desirable

Lot 1145: Desirable "Peanut" Size Philadelphia Deringer Percussion Pistol

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,500

Description: Desirable "Peanut" Size Philadelphia Deringer Percussion Pistol This Philadelphia Deringer pistol is very similar to the one used by John Wilkes Booth in the assassination of President Lincoln and was produced in the shop of famed American gunmaker Henry Deringer circa 1850-1870. Its short barrel is only about 1 1/2 inches long from the muzzle to the front of the breech plug (2 inches counting the plug). The overall length of the gun is about 5 inches. Despite this tiny size, the pistol still displays all of the iconic Henry Deringer features including "DERINGER/PHILADA" on the lock and breech, the sunburst "P" on the left side of the breech which is also silver banded, bird's head walnut stock with checkering, and engraved German silver furniture including an initial shield on the upper wrist and tear drop butt plate. The barrel is fitted with a dovetailed German silver blade front sight and has the classic faux Damascus finish commonly seen on Henry Deringer's pistols. A notch rear sight is fitted on the upper tang. The trigger guard has the late style pineapple finial. Manufacturer: Henry Deringer Rifles And Pistols Model: Percussion Pocket BBL: 2 inch Stock: walnut Gauge: 41 Finish: brown/casehardened/bright Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Fine. The barrel retains 85% of the plum brown finish with grayed copper striping. The lock and breech have a dark patina. The German silver furniture is mostly bright with some slight aging. The revarnished stock is very good with some light scrapes and general handling wear. The action remains excellent. This is a fine example of one of America's most iconic firearms.

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,250

Description: Ornamented Jacob Albright Style Percussion Kentucky Rifle with Incised Carved Buttstock This rifle was built using an engraved "S. MOORE/WARRANTED" lock converted to percussion. S. Moore locks have previously been dated to the early 19th century. The barrel has some unclear markings on the breech end of the barrel, a "JA" marked initial shield on the upper wrist, and a matching "JA" marking worked into the carving on the left side of the butt. The barrel marking is likely "J Alb" which is the mark of Jacob Albright (1766-1840 Centre County, PA) and were also used by his son Jacob Albright Jr. The carving designs match another known Albright rifle. The rifle is either partially restored with some of the designs recut or may be a contemporary copy of their work. The rifle is fitted on a full length maple stock with pieced section on the forend, small cheek rest, German silver inlays, an engraved patch box, and the carved designs mentioned above. The barrel has blade and notch sights. A hickory ramrod is included. Manufacturer: Kentucky Model: Percussion BBL: 38 1/8 inch octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 45 percussion Finish: brown/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Good as converted to percussion and partially restored and repaired. The barrel retains most of the artificial brown finish. The lock has some cold blue and brown patina and has been cleaned at the front. The brass and silver inlays have an aged patina. The stock is fine with a loose piece at the front of the lock plate, some cracks, and scattered minor dings and pressure marks. The action needs some work, but the markings on the lock are crisp.

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $1,700

Description: Philadelphia Deringer Style Percussion Pocket Pistol This pistol was manufactured between approximately 1845 and 1870 with a trigger guard finial that most closely resembles the design commonly found on Henry Deringer's pistols produced between 1848-1850. The top of the silver banded breech and tail of the back action lock plate are marked "DERINGER/PHILADELa". The left upper left flat of the breech is also marked with the sunburst "( P )" marking commonly found on Henry Deringer's pistols. Most of the surfaces display floral engraving while the barrel is plain, the tear drop buttplate has a zig zag border, and the initial shield has a zig zag border and is marked "TJM" or "IJM". The underside of the barrel and breech have a series of small dot and bar marks as does the wedge. The pistol is similar to some of the Henry Deringer examples pictured in Wilson and Eberhart's THE DERINGER IN AMERICA VOLUME I. It has a checkered bird's head stock. Manufacturer: Philadelphia Model: Derringer BBL: 4 inch flat top round Stock: walnut Gauge: 45 Finish: brown/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good. Aside from the German silver furniture, most of the metal surfaces display a dark brown patina. The stock is fine with some pressure marks and slight scrapes along with crisp checkering, and a slight hairline crack on the left at the breech. The action is very good, and most of the markings and engraving remain clear.

Custom A. O. Niedner Percussion Lock Pistol

Lot 616: Custom A. O. Niedner Percussion Lock Pistol

by Amoskeag Auction Co

March 28, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,000

Description: .31 cal., 10 1/2" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel is a nice Niedner rust blue with the patent breech and tang being nicely re-color cased, showing remnants of light pitting from a previous installation on a much older pistol. The pistol is sighted with a Lyman-style blade front sight and flat-top square notch rear and is marked on the top ahead of sight "A. O. Niedner/Dowagiac Mich". The lock is salvaged from an older percussion pistol and is marked "Williams & Co." and dated 1850 at its front. There are modern ramrod thimbles and tailpipe and the very lightly engraved triggerguard appears as though it was salvaged from an older pistol as well. The pistol is stocked in American black walnut, showing some areas of sapwood into-which Mr. Niedner has a trompe l'oeil-painted some additional nice grain; the stock rating excellent overall. There is a nice copper or brass-tipped ramrod included and the pistolgrip cap is blued steel and features a screw-out nipple pick. The lock is crisp and mechanically functional and shows some lovely color case-hardening as does the hammer. The arm comes cased in a hardwood presentation case with wooden cleaning/ramrod, a nipple wrench, round ball mould, a wooden powder flask stamped with Niedner's name, small nickel oiler and a tin of Goldmark's percussion caps. A very handsome little smallbore percussion pistol from this gifted craftsman. (36650-99) {ANTIQUE} [John T. Amber Collection] [Michael Petrov Collection]
