Kentucky Militia Marked Civil War Era Triplett & Scott Breech Loading Rifle

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 13, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $1,700

Description: Kentucky Militia Marked Civil War Era Triplett & Scott Breech Loading Rifle The Triplett & Scott carbines and rifles were manufactured by the Meriden Manufacturing Company in the final two years of the Civil War. Only 3,000 of the rifles and 2,000 of the carbines are estimated to have been produced. The Triplett & Scott system employs a novel design in which the barrel group rotates down to a magazine tube projecting from the stock underneath the action on the left for reloading. They were designed for the 56-50 Spencer cartridge. Very few of these firearms saw use during the Civil War. The whole 5,000 appear to have been sold on a contract executed on January 2,1865, to the State of Kentucky for use by the Kentucky home guard troops who were called upon to protect Sherman's supply lines. They were delivered in May after the war had ended. This example was clearly designated for that purpose based on the small "KENTUCKY" stamp on the left side of the breech. The upper tang is marked "TRIPLET & SCOTT/PATENT DEC 6 1864", and the left side of the receiver is marked "MERIDEN MANFG Co./MERIDEN CONN." Meriden Manufacturing Company was Charles Parker's second venture into firearms production prior to making the famous Parker Brothers shotguns. The rifle has a blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight. The forearm is secured by a screw and a carbine style single barrel band. The straight wrist buttstock has swivels on the top and bottom and a slightly curved buttplate. Manufacturer: Meriden Firearms Co Model: Triplett & Scott Repeating BBL: 30 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 50 RF Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The rifle has a mix of fading original finish and gray and brown patina. The wood is very good with some small pressure marks and light scratches along with a "typical" two inch long hairline crack on the left side of the wrist. Cracks at this location are common on these rifles and carbines due to the inherent weaknesses created by the magazine tube. This example is less obvious than most. The action is fine, and the markings are crisp. The spring for resetting the loading gate appears to be absent or non-functional.

Excellent Civil War Era Greene Underhammer Breech Loading Percussion Rifle

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 12, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,750 - $5,500

Description: Excellent Civil War Era Greene Underhammer Breech Loading Percussion Rifle Only 1,500 U.S. and 3,000 Russian contract Greene rifles were manufactured by A.H. Waters Armory circa 1859 to the early 1860s. It has the distinction of being considered the first bolt action rifle purchased by the U.S. government. Technically, the bolt mechanism is simply a loading feature, and the action itself operates via a manually cocked ring hammer ahead of the trigger guard. Although the bore appears smooth, it actually has an oval type of rifling invented by Charles Lancaster, a London Gunmaker. It is marked "GREENE'S PATENT/NOV. 17 1857." on the upper tang and features a bayonet lug/blade front sight, stepped rear sight graduated 5 through 8 on the folding leaf and 1-4 on the base, three barrel bands, trumpet head ramrod, buttplate with trapdoor for the included cleaning brush, straight wrist walnut stock, and sling swivels mounted on the middle barrel band and lower tang. Some small quantities of Greene rifles were sold to state militia units via William Read & Sons of Boston which likely explains the lack of inspection markings on this and some other examples. Manufacturer: Greene Model: Underhammer BBL: 35 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 53 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Excellent. The rifle retains 90% plus of the original brown finish on the barrel and strong, but dark, case colors on the action. The stock is also excellent with some small scrapes and marks and otherwise a dark tone overall. There is a line of unclear marks on the right side of the comb. The action remains excellent, and the markings are crisp.

Kentucky Militia Marked Civil War Era Triplett & Scott Breech Loading Rifle

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 12, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $900 - $1,400

Description: Kentucky Militia Marked Civil War Era Triplett & Scott Breech Loading Rifle The Triplett & Scott carbines and rifles were manufactured by the Meriden Manufacturing Company in the final two years of the Civil War. Only 3,000 of the rifles and 2,000 of the carbines are estimated to have been produced. The Triplett & Scott system employs a novel design in which the barrel group rotates down to a magazine tube projecting from the stock underneath the action on the left for reloading. They were designed for the .56-50 Spencer cartridge. The upper tang is marked "TRIPLET & SCOTT/PATENT DEC 6 1864", and the left side of the receiver is marked "MERIDEN MANFG Co./MERIDEN CONN." Meriden Manufacturing Company was Charles Parker second venture into firearms production prior to making the famous Parker Brothers shotguns. The rifle has a blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight. The forearm is secured by a screw and a carbine style single barrel band. The straight wrist buttstock has swivels on the top and bottom and a slightly curved buttplate. Manufacturer: Meriden Firearms Co Model: Triplett & Scott Repeating BBL: 30 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 50 RF Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good plus. The barrel retains 60% of the faded original blue finish with some thinning in areas, and the action displays traces of the muted case colors. There are some marks and scratches overall and areas of light spotting. The wood is good as refinished. There is a small gouge in the right side of the forearm and some overall minor scratches. The buttstock has a crack extending back from the magazine tube which is very common on these firearms due to the inherent weakness of the stock due to the placement of the magazine. The action needs work, and there is an empty tap on the left side of the breech at the front and another hole at the front.

Historic Spencer Civil War Model 1860 Saddle Ring Carbine with Kentucky Cavalry Research

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 12, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: Historic Spencer Civil War Model 1860 Saddle Ring Carbine with Kentucky Cavalry Research The included documentation with this carbine indicates it was issued to Company A 3rd Kentucky Cavalry. Period records indicate that a Benjamin O. Mitchell (reportedly, though not specified as recipient) was a member of Company A and was also a member of Company B of the 48th Regiment of Kentucky Infantry. According to the notes, the serial numbers and issue information were discovered by Jerry Coates. Spencer rifles and carbines were among the most popular arms of the American Civil War. Toward the end of the Civil War the Spencer established itself as the main arm for cavalry use and was widely issued during the Indian War era as well. This example is equipped with blade front and a folding adjustable rear sights. The top of the receiver has the standard three line address and patent date. The stock and forearm are oil-finished walnut with a single barrel band, sling bar mounted on the left stock wrist, steel butt plate with tube magazine, and sling swivel. The right side of the stock has the hand carved initials "M.H." Manufacturer: Spencer Model: 1860 BBL: 22 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 52 Spencer Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 54589 Class: Antique Condition: Very good. The carbine has an overall brown patina with patches of mild pitting. The re-oiled wood is also very good with some scrapes and dings. The action remains excellent. Some of the markings are faded, but most are legible.

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: serial #M2154, 50-60-450 Joslyn Rimfire, 35 1/2" barrel with a very good plus bore with strong rifling, but exhibiting heavy frosting along the edges of the grooves. The metal surfaces rate very good and retain about 70% of their original in-the-white finish, although exhibiting considerable light oxidation staining. The lockplate rates very good plus and retains about 90% of its original in-the-white finish, still displaying strong arsenal stamp marks. The smooth walnut full stock features three barrel bands and rates very good, exhibiting only some minor handling marks and wear; the barrel band retaining spring is missing from under the front-most band. The stock is equipped with what appears to be its original buttplate. The buttplate rates near very good, but exhibits moderate oxidation staining and some wear; one of the screws is missing from the buttplate, making it sit somewhat loose on the rifle. The rifle retains its original iron sights and includes its cleaning rod. A scarce Civil War era U.S. military rifle, of which approximately only 3,000 were manufactured. It should be noted that the firing pin is missing from the breechlock. An interesting, and scarce, piece of U.S. military firearms history which is dated 1864 and remains in very good condition overall. (137249-119) {ANTIQUE}
