Courthope, Bookseller, and Paper-Hanger " laid down on front pastedown, original half calf, rubbed, red morocco label "Irmelinda's Log-Book 1801" on upper cover, small piece of calf lacking, 1 brass clasp only of 2, spine worn, joints splitting, 4to, Sunday 15th March - 10th December 1801 & 12th April - 26th August 1802. A ship's log of voyages; the first from London to Madeira, Demerara and returning via Martinique and St Kitts, and secondly, two voyages from London to Oporto. "Ship Irmelina on her passage from Martinique to St. Kitts Winds ENE At 4 the Island Nevis bore NNW distant 5 leagues At 4 Spoke the Commodore, & at 5 came to an Anchor in St Kitts Roads in 18 F[atho]ms Andrew Willson Dead - John Johnston sick." Thomas Fair was born at Skibbereen, County Cork, in Ireland, and joined the merchant navy. He sailed around the world under the command of Captain Nathaniel Portlock, (b. in or before 1747, d. 1817, naval officer and fur trader), during the years 1785-88. Fair's Island was named after him as he was the first to sight it off the north-west coast of America. He died of yellow fever on this journey as captain of the Irmelinda, and was buried at Demarara in 1801, succeeded as captain by his brother Robert.

Description: in medieval London.- Grant by Hugh of Dunesden to Gilbert Hakewell and Geoffrey Messeburgh of land in the Parish of St. Martin's le Grand, giving the abuttments, to have and to hold for 1 pound of cumin or 2d, payable within 8 days of Michaelmas, also paying the king 2d, the Canons of Suuerke [Southwark] 12d, for which the aforesaid Gilbert has given 5 marks of silver purchase price and Geoffrey 5 marks, witnesses: Roger Fitz Alan, John Burgelun, Robert de Wuberne aldermen, Robert de Corneville, William Fitz Stephen, Salekin de Basing and others, manuscript in Latin, in a fine charter hand, 16 lines, 2 tears along folds, a few small holes affecting a few letters only, slightly stained at edges, browned, folds, original green wax seal with decoration and lettering, broken in two and repaired with resin, later medieval archival note on dorse, 170 x 211mm., [ between 1215-30]. Witnessed by Joseph Aaron, one of the four Justices of the Jews (and one of only two men to be named, the other being Benjamin de Talemunt), of the Scaccarium Judaeorum, the Exchequer of the Jews at Westminster. The exchequer of the Jews ("Scaccarium Judæorum" or "Thesauraria Judæorum") was a division of the Court of Exchequer in which the taxes and the law-cases of the Jews were recorded and regulated. It operated from the late 1190s until the eventual expulsion of the Jews in 1290. An interesting document with an impressive list of important City of London witnesses, including: Roger Fitz Alan (?b. 1166), second mayor of London, barons replaced Fitz Alan as mayor in 1215 with Serlo the Mercer; Robert de Wuberne, alderman; Robert de Corneville, royal chaplain; William Fitz Stephen, official, brother of Ralph fitz Stephen (d. 1202), courtier and administrator, "With his brothers William and Eustace he served Henry II in a number of capacities, in a manner characteristic of the familiares of that king"; Salekin [Solomon] de Basing, mayor of London in 1217.
