American Chippendale Walnut Blanket Chest of Drawers, Pennsylvania c. 1780

by Silla Fine Antiques

Ships From: Shippensburg, PA US

Description: FINE AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT BLANKET CHEST OF DRAWERSPennsylvania c. 1780, preserved in nearly untouched conditionItem # 411DXP29AThis unusually striking American Chippendale blanket chest is distinguished by the open dovetailing of the case, this following from the sides through the feet to accentuate the hand crafted nature of the object. Pennsylvania craftsmen during the late 18th century built these pieces to be family heirlooms that could pass from one generation to the next and the quality of craftsmanship was something they took pride in and openly advertised - while other work centers sought to hide the dovetail, being simply a means of joining one plank to another, clientele in this region expected excellent joinery and examined it as part of the purchase process. As a result, the dovetail became something of an art form, this exercised to it's fullest in the presentation of the case. Remaining in nearly undisturbed condition with only minor repairs, the chest retains not only it's original brasses and all original hardware but also untouched feet - these are beautiful statements of purity in construction, the entire underside revealing only wooden peg joinery with no glue or nails. A back foot support and accompanying block are separated from the underside, allowing you to see exactly how the blocking perfectly fits together inside of the foot (see pictures in the slideshow). The drawers are constructed in the typical manner of the region, the poplar secondary woods hand dovetailed in the frame with the two-board bottom half-lapped at the joint, chamfered along the sides and set in grooves, allowing them to expand and contract freely. They retain their original brasses and locks, though it is possible the middle drawer has a replaced bottom since the two planks are not half-lapped and the end grains show some variation. Inside of the blanket chest is a sparse interior with a small wooden till on the left. The front of the till lifts to reveal a trio of secret drawers, the middle drawer with a period inscription that we find illegible. The lid retains it's original wrought iron strap hinges with original rosehead nails. Aesthetically, the chest exhibits very fine walnut planks in the front and sides; the subtle swirling of grains is pleasing and understated in the golden cognac hue of the planks. The three drawers have much more exuberant grain activity, these with more intense rays that immediately draw the eye. For the collector of fine American antiques with a passion for purity and form, this is an exceptional blanket chest of drawers that will certainly be a cherished part of your collection for a lifetime.

Condition Report: Top with a slight warp, this leading to a break out in the molding on both corners - both appear to have been repaired at some point, but this has since come apart again. Loss at right corner molding, though the piece is retained (as shown in images). Oval lock escutcheon possibly a period replacement (not matching the style of the rest of the hardware); all other hardware (brasses, locks, hinges) entirely original. Original key retained, though strap lock no longer functional. Rosehead nails in left hinge have lost their grip (two absent rosehead nails retained), leaving only one nail to bear the weight of the lid when open. Feet and all blocking entirely original - back left foot support and adjoining block are separate but retained (see images). Patching to till lid and till molding; left bottom drawer with patch corner, middle drawer bottom possibly replaced. Early surface, probably not original but wonderfully patinated with many layers of wax preserving the surface. Top with scars and circular stains. A simply outstanding chest - the only thing that needs real consideration is the break out of the molding at the top corners, as this may or may not be able to be restored. The other notes above are very minor flaws, the chest remaining in a very pure and nearly untouched state of repair. We have 74 detailed images of this blanket chest available on our primary website. Due to image limitations clients should visit our gallery website (www.sillafineantiques.com) prior to purchase to review all item images. Verbal condition reports are also available by calling (717) 658-8274 Monday through Friday 9a-5:30p or by emailing sales@sillafineantiques.com

American Chippendale Painted Blanket Chest of Drawers, Pennsylvania c. 1790-1810

by Silla Fine Antiques

Ships From: Shippensburg, PA US

Description: AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE PAINTED BLANKET CHEST OF DRAWERSPennsylvania, c. 1790-1810; Nearly UntouchedItem # 1406IPP23AThis absolute jewel remains in nearly pristine condition, retaining a very early and almost certainly original painted surface with untouched structure and rugged charm. Crafted in Pennsylvania, the style of the hinges and drawer construction suggest the form could be as late as 1810. The heavy and eternal construction, typical of the state, is lightened by the whimsical nature of the painted surface. The whole is framed nicely between the crackled and worn brown top and dark (possibly brown) feet and base molding - the facade is divided evenly into thirds, the upper two-thirds decorated in a speckled ochre embellished by brilliant red rectangular panels with inset corners spaced evenly around the midriff. A thin molding divides the lower one-third, this with a muted earthy red pigment with ochre speckles grounding the three drawers - these have a beautiful teal pigment, the same tone employed in much of the thin molding. Construction of the form is typical of the Southeastern counties of Pennsylvania, the top with open tongues on either end finished in breadboard ends affixed with three wedged through-tenons; note the face of the tenon is left open along the front of the chest, exposing the quality of craftsmanship. This lifts over a pair of wrought iron strap hinges, these moved just slightly to account for shrinkage of the top over time. The interior is clean other than a single till, craftily constructed to conceal three tiny drawers in a compartment beneath the primary space, accessed by lifting upward on the front panel. All three drawers are constructed of poplar, the bottoms deeply chamfered and the backs nailed along the back edge. Likewise, the three large drawers in the lower third of the chest are fully poplar, the bottoms of two drawers half-lapped (two board) and the corners dovetailed. The original locks are retained on all three of these drawers. Separating the three drawers are a series of fluting in the case, bringing some interesting architecture to the form - a very striking embellishment. The feet are dovetailed along the corners, removing the need for corner blocking - however, the craftsman employed two pieces of wood of nearly identical shape to the back foot supports to support the front feet, these set at a ninety-degree angle to the foot. Truly delightful in every way, this is a piece that will be cherished by any serious collector of American antiques. The surface is magnetic, full of life and brings great color and charm to any setting it becomes a part of.

Condition Report: Very early surface, probably the original paint; entire surface heavily worn, scratched and abraded, though the result is very handsome. Period bail pulls in original holes, the hardware is possibly replaced (backs and pins almost certainly replaced); locks original; upper key original, no key for lower drawers; structure untouched. Front left foot cracked and reglued (images show foot prior to being reglued); back right foot facing replaced, all other feet and supports original and untouched; some scroll return losses to bracket feet. Iron hinges original, moved slightly to adjust for shrinkage. Light crack in left breadboard end of the top (not clear in the pictures). American Painted Blanket Chest w/ Dovetailed Feet, Pennsylvania c. 1820

by Silla Fine Antiques

Ships From: Shippensburg, PA US

Description: AMERICAN POPLAR DOVETAILED BLANKET CHESTProbably Pennsylvania, c. 1820-40; almost untouched conditionItem # 1401ETP11PPThis is a nearly untouched example of early Americana, an austere and unembellished blanket chest from the second quarter of the nineteenth-century. The top is a single solid plank of thick poplar with molding applied to the edges using cut iron nails, lifting over original cut and forged iron strap hinges (retaining original screws) to reveal a tidy interior with a small till on the left. An iron lock used to be attached to the inside, this and the clasp now absent. The clean lines of the front of the case are accentuated by the exposed dovetailing following from the sides through the original bracket feet. The entire surface retains a wonderfully patinated early red paint, almost certainly original. While many households do not have a need for blanket chests today, we've seen some very successful integration of these forms into period and primitively styled decors as entertainment stands (being of perfect width to compliment a television) and as a table flanked by a pair of chairs, perhaps in front of the window. And naturally, the blanket chest is ideally situated at the foot of the bed in a room of early decor.

Condition Report: Lock and clasp absent; feet worn, back right facing cracked and missing lower 2"€; front right facing cracked at joint with molding; underside retaining just one original corner block, the others now absent - all feet are original. Original red painted surface, extensively worn, scraped and scarred; all screws original on original iron strap hinges. Retaining original cut iron escutcheon.Due to image limitations clients should visit our gallery website (www.sillafineantiques.com) prior to purchase to review all item images.
