Scarce Gallatin/Freund & Brother Tooled Leather Holster for Colt Model 1860 Revolver

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 13, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,500

Description: Scarce Gallatin/Freund & Brother Tooled Leather Holster for Colt Model 1860 Revolver This holster was manufactured circa 1866-1875 and is marked "GALLANTIN/MAKERS" on the belt loop. It has the classic California pattern Slim Jim construction and floral scroll designs. The banner at the top reads "Freund & Bro." (only Br visible). The Freund brothers Frank and George immigrated to the U.S. from Germany in the mid-19th century. Frank, the older of the two, was trained as a gunsmith in Europe and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war, the brothers worked as mobile outfitters and set up shops at the end of the Union Pacific Railroad and relocated westward with the end of the line starting in Nebraska City. After the completion of the railroad, they operated successful stores in several locations throughout the West. Their shops were known for custom work including high end "improved" rifles original produced by Sharps and other major manufactured and tooled leather gear such as this holster. They supplied many gold miners, buffalo hunters, and homesteaders with arms, ammunition, and equipment. Frank eventually settled back east in New Jersey while George moved to Durango, Colorado, in 1881 where established his "Colorado Armory" and remained until his death in 1911. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Fine. The holster is complete and retains attractive white highlighted designs. The leather exhibits some rub wear and cracking. The stitching is tight. The brass loop rivet has dark verdigris. Few Freund and Brother holsters survive. Antique leather and fabric good of any type rarely survive well over a century and those that do are certainly scarcely found in this fine of condition.

It has a replacement blade front sight, standard frame groove rear sight, and replacement checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt emblem up top. The barrel gauges .44 caliber. It comes with a more recent white leather holster with what looks to be sinew stitching. The face of the holster has red, white, blue, and turquoise beads; the upper section has two crossed single star American flags and the bottom has an unknown Native American style design. Manufacturer: Colt Model: Single Action Army BBL: 5 inch round Stock: Gauge: 44 CF Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: hard rubber Serial Number: 57645 Class: Antique Condition: Poor. The revolver has traces of an old cold blue finish and otherwise mostly brown patina along with pitting and oxidation. The heavily worn grips are poor with well a light brown sun faded tone. The action functions but does not lock up. Most of the markings are well worn, but the serial numbers remain clear. The holster is very fine with only minor wear.

Fine Silver Furnished Sheep's Foot Knife with Attractive Polished Stone Grip and Silver Fitted Sheath

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 11, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $3,500

Description: Fine Silver Furnished Sheep's Foot Knife with Attractive Polished Stone Grip and Silver Fitted Sheath Measuring 11 5/8 inches overall, this knife was produced by an unknown smith with an unmarked 7 7/8 inch sheep's foot pattern blade. Valued for the cutting ability of it's straight edge, the sheep's foot blade was popular with farmers and sailors due to the dull point reducing the chance of an accidental stabbing when working with a struggling animal or on a rolling deck. The blade is set into a silver paneled brass collar, with a smooth octagonal-faceted semi-precious stone grip and a small silver pommel cap. The sheath is cloth covered horn, with silver furniture decorated with repeating motifs of 4 intertwined "C"s, 2 intertwined "A"s, and a "S" or "8" design. No hall marks are present. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Very good. The blade shows a mixed aged patina, with some small cracks about an inch back from the point. The collar shows some light wear, and some chips and cracks are present on the grip. The sheath is good, with some wear and loss of the cover and a fine aged patina on the silver.
