17TH/18TH C PORTRAIT OF MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS (1542-1587):

by White's Auctions

May 26, 2015, 6:00 PM EST

Middleboro, MA, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: Half length portrait of the Queen in black with white lace collar and head piece. She is wearing a gold crucifix. Oil on canvas. Oval image 13” x 10”. Multi section carved wooden frame with gilt decorated wood mat. Measures overall 15” x 22”. Partial label on back written “"Mary Queen of Scots. This portrait is probably the most beautiful genuine portrait of her in extant".” Mary Queen of Scots was born in Linlithgow Palace, Scotland, on the 7th of December 1542. She was the daughter of King James V of Scotland, and his French wife, Mary of Guise. Her father died only a few days after her birth, and the week old Mary became Queen of Scotland on the 14th of December 1542. Mary Stuart, known to history as Mary, Queen of Scots, was one of the most fascinating and controversial monarchs of sixteenth century Europe. At one time, she claimed the crowns of four nations - Scotland, France, England and Ireland. Her physical beauty and kind heart were acknowledged even by her enemies, yet she lacked the political skills to rule successfully in Scotland. Her second marriage was unpopular and ended in murder and scandal; her third was even less popular and ended in forced abdication in favor of her infant son. She fled to England in 1568, hoping for the help of her cousin, Elizabeth I. Her presence was dangerous for the English queen, who feared Catholic plotting on Mary's behalf. Mary never met her cousin and remained imprisoned for the next nineteen years. She was executed in 1587, only forty-four years old. By orders of the English government, all of her possessions were burned. In 1603, upon Elizabeth's death, Mary's son became King of England as James I. No Monarch before or since has traveled Scotland as has Mary.

Condition Report: Good condition,unsigned.

Morris, Robert. Autograph letter signed.

by Profiles in History

June 11, 2015, 11:00 AM PST

Calabasas, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: 113. Morris, Robert. Autograph letter signed (“Robt Morris”), 1 page (9.3 x 7.5 in.; 236 x 193mm), [Philadelphia], 25 May 1798, to John Nicholson; address on verso; some browning; repair to upper horizontal fold. From Debtor’s Prison Morris writes he has no money and articulates his financial woes. The Revolutionary War financier writes in full: I am sorry to learn by the Contents of your No.1 of yesterday that you have for a time lost the use of your messenger, his complaint is not dangerous. The Trustees have not yet answered my Letter nor have I heard if they appointed a Committee. I will write to Genl. Forrest that we have no Money nor any expectation of getting it and ask him to try to raise it by selling at private Sale some of the Lots. As I see you have marked & numbered the Sherriffs Advertizement I send it back herewith. The Steam Engine Affairs were I suppose on the Lot but I am yet ignorant how it is and wish it may rain this morning so as to oblige them to postpone. I have written Jno. Barclay a short letter telling him as I formerly told him that he should able to you rather than me but that when the Law was resorted to I considered all Negotiation for Security as at end. And that as to the No. Amn Land Company we had long considered him as having declined the Trust that we attributed his having done so to the example of Mr. Willing who had by his refusal given the first fatal stab to our affairs. Somebody has sent me a Pittsburg Paper of the 19th May wherein your Lands & mine are again advertised by the Sherriff for Sale on the 5th of June. J. Ingersoll is added to the list of Executioners. What is to be done, where is my deed. Genl Dickinson was here. I was engaged. He is gone to Delaware but will soon be back and the business with him must be closed. I pray you therefore to examine and let us be prepared one way or other for him.In his later years, Morris used his fortune to buy millions of acres of frontier land, confident in a real estate boom as the country grew and prospered. A boom eventually came, but too late for Morris. He was put in debtor’s prison in Philadelphia from 1798 to 1801. Congress eventually rewrote the bankruptcy laws, so the “Financier of the Revolution” lived out his final years in dignity at home. $2,000 - $3,000

Antique Mexican Tin Retablo - La Inmaculada

by ArtemisGallery LIVE

June 11, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Erie , CO, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: Mexico, ca. 18th century CE. A retablo of "La Purisima Concepcion" or "La Inmaculada," finely painted on tin, this iconography symbolizing the purity of Mary. The composition consists of the Virgin standing upon a globe which may signify a new moon with the crescent pointing downward; however, in this example there is also a diminuitive head, perhaps of the Christ child, with a golden crescent moon positioned behind his head. This example depicts Saint John's vision of the Apocalyptic Woman, a woman clothed by the sun, with the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars. In accordance with Gloria Fraser Gifford's scholarship, this is an example from the 17th or 18th century, as it shows La Purisima as Mary suspended from the realm of this world, surrounded by cherubs and symbols of the rosary. In the large oil painting by Francisco Antonio Vallejo, Mater Inmaculada, painted in Mexico in 1714, Mary is the Apocalyptic Woman accompanied by various attributes held by angels. In addition, the biblical serpent grasps an apple in his mouth, and as Gifford notes, "Mary represents not only the handmaiden of God and the woman of Saint John's vision, but a second Eve, as Christ is often equated with the second Adam." (Gifford, Mexican Folk Retablos, Albuquerque: Univerisity of New Mexico Press, 1974, p. 46) Size: 7-1/2" x 6". Provenance: Ex-private Ramon Kelley collection, Denver, CO. Mr. Kelley is a prolific and accomplished artist. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108621

Condition Report: Intact. A bit of paint loss as shown.
