Lot 49148: Dwight D. Eisenhower Endorsed Check.

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: Dwight D. Eisenhower Endorsed Check. Measuring 8.5" x 3.25", this check from The Abilene Manufacturing Company of Abilene, Kansas, dated July 9, 1910, and drawn on the Farmers National Bank, orders payment of $8.75 to Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower, then a nineteen-year-old high school graduate (who in other letters from this time claims to be eighteen so that he could be accepted to the Naval Academy at Annapolis), has signed "Dwight Eisenhower" in pencil on the verso. Three months later, he accepted his nomination to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Description: EISENHOWER, DWIGHT D. Typed letter signed "Ike" to Colonel Charles Curtis Herrick. West Virginia: 30 November 1945. 1 page typed letter signed "Ike Eisenhower" on one sheet of Ashford General Hospital stationery, addressed "Dear Dad" (Herrick's nickname). 7 x 5 inches (18 13 cm); framed with a portrait. Dwight D. Eisenhower Autograph Letter Signed.

Lot 49146: Dwight D. Eisenhower Autograph Letter Signed.

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,800 - $2,500

Description: Dwight D. Eisenhower Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages (verso only on ruled paper), 8" x 10.5", [Algiers], January 26, [1943]. Writing home to his wife of nearly twenty-seven years, Mamie, while overseas during the Second World War, Gen. Eisenhower, not yet named Supreme Allied Commander, provides an intimate look at his relationship with the future First Lady, in part: "By the time this reaches you the news will be out that we've had a convocation of high rank here - so you will know that I've had only a matter of minutes (even less) to myself. But I do have time to tell you again that I'm prouder of you every time someone brings me news of the way you handle yourself - of the serene way that you (my mother too, God bless her) brush off the chance to indulge in cheap publicity. You are a thorobred [sic], and, merely incidentally, I love the hell out of you. Maybe even more than that, but if I were ever able in one letter to tell you exactly how much I love you there would be no reason for writing you again - because that's the only thing I ever seem to say." Smoothed folds, else fine.

Dwight D. Eisenhower: Group of Ten Letters Signed.

Lot 49145: Dwight D. Eisenhower: Group of Ten Letters Signed.

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: Dwight D. Eisenhower: Group of Ten Letters Signed. Each of the letters, written on stationery with The White House letterhead (with the exclusion of one) and signed simply "DE," are addressed to his older brother, Edgar, who was an attorney in Tacoma, Washington. In one of the earliest letters of this collection, dated December 17, 1954, the president responds to a letter from his brother regarding a citizenship ceremony performed by George Hugo Boldt (1903-1984), a former Tacoma lawyer (and presumably an acquaintance of Edgar's) whom Eisenhower had appointed a Federal judge of the Western District of Washington the previous year, aboard the USS Missouri, where he describes the scene, in part: "As far as the local authorities know, this is the first time a federal court has ever been held on a battleship. The whole ceremony was so well done, and was accompanied by one very touching incident when a Japanese man and wife went to the plaque that is embedded in the surrender deck . . . and knelt down and prayed. I have often wondered what their thoughts were when they stood on that historic spot, where their country surrendered its arms to the nation to which they now have sworn allegiance." In response, the president wrote, in part: "I have just now had a chance to read the transcript of the naturalization proceedings held on the 'Missouri.' You might tell Judge Boldt that I particularly liked his discussion of the rights and privileges of citizenship; someday - since I am sure he would not mind - I may possibly plagiarize what he said there." Less than one year later, in September 1955, the president, who until 1949 was a heavy smoker, had a serious heart attack while in Colorado, landing him in the hospital for six weeks. Writing to Edgar from Denver on October 22, just eight days after celebrating his sixty-fifth birthday, he thanks him for the birthday wishes, agreeing with him "as to the disadvantages of the circumstances - but this year I was particularly glad to have an opportunity to celebrate under any conditions." In March of the following year, the president again writes to his concerned older brother thanking him for "your letter and its accompanying brochure on the Stauffer Posture-Rest. I am grateful for your thought, but as things now stand I am on a schedule of work, rest, diet, recreation and exercise that absorbs all my time." He then humorously pokes fun at his golf game: "The only way I could find time to use the machine would be to give up golf - and tragic as are my adventures with a golf ball these days, I still insist on sticking to them." Edgar himself had a bout with ill health while visiting Washington and was treated by Dr. Howard M. Snyder, a retired major general and personal physician to the president. Edgar became concerned after a conversation with Senator Styles Bridges, who asked, "Well, does the President's private physician serve all the President's family?" Not wanting some "two-bit" politician making a fuss over it, he writes to Dwight on May 7, 1956, asking how he can "get the pills back to the Government without embarrassing anybody." In response, the president wrote asking him not to "worry about the matter . . . If anyone asks you about it further, just tell them you were sick and that I was concerned and sent my doctor to see you." He goes on to say that he will question the general and will pay any costs if there are any. The letters span the years 1954 through 1956. Five of the letters are accompanied by carbon copies of the original letters to Eisenhower by his brother. Aside from the usual folds (and one small ink spot near the left edge of the letter dated October 22, 1955), these letters are in fine condition.

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: Winston Churchill and Dwight D. Eisenhower Signed Bottle of Champagne with Display Case. This bottle of champagne by Ayala & Co., vintage 1945, measures approximately 12.75" x 3.5" (at the base). The label bears the arms of King George VI of England and reads, in part: "By Appointment / Purveyors of Champagne to H.M. King George VI." The label also bears the signatures of English Prime Minister Winston Churchill, signed along the right edge, and the president of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, who has signed simply "DE" along the left edge. According to a note of provenance attached to its rear, this signed bottle was "Presented to the Yale Club (Mayflower Hotel) by Consuelo N. Bailey/Speaker of the [Vermont] House of Representatives duly signed VE/VJ dinner label by Churchill and Ike - gifted July 1953 by Ike for support in the efforts for peace during his presidential campaign." The bottle is showcased in a display case which is tagged with a sign providing its provenance: "Yale Club of Washington DC / Mayflower Hotel / Charles Carroll Glover / March 21st 1968." It is likely that the bottle was presented to Glover by the Yale Club in this very case. Glover was in the Yale class of 1910, and later served as Washington, D.C. Alumni Association President. The case measures approximately 12" x 20.5" x 12". Attached near the lower edge is a small sign reading:

Dwight D. Eisenhower Typed Letter Signed

Lot 49147: Dwight D. Eisenhower Typed Letter Signed

by Heritage Auctions

April 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: Dwight D. Eisenhower Typed Letter Signed "D.E." Two pages (verso only), 7" x 10.5", on his personal letterhead, [Washington], January 30, 1956. Marked "Personal" and addressed to his older brother, Edgar, a Tacoma, Washington, attorney. The two brothers were very different. Edgar, who held very strong politically-conservative views, felt that the federal government was usurping power from the states. Because of his strong feelings against centralization, Edgar appears to have mostly avoided Washington throughout his brother's administration, even refusing to attend his second inauguration. Yet, as many letters between the two attest, the brothers' relationship was usually amicable, often lighthearted. Here, you can sense the president's annoyance at his brother's insistence that the authority of the Constitution was somehow being usurped, in part: "The first paragraph of my letter pointed out that I was ready, through an amendment, to give assurances to the entire country that no treaty could have force or effect if it violated the Constitution. . . . But that text, it now develops, does not satisfy the people who seemingly want to go back to the days of the Confederation - the ones who want to assure that a single State can defy a treaty properly made by the Executive and confirmed by two-thirds of the Senate and found by the Supreme Court to confirm to the Constitution. In foreign affairs, America must act as a unit, and in this field, the Constitution framers were indeed careful to make that clear. You say you are disturbed that so many people don't readily concur with your views on this matter. As you can see, I differ emphatically. I happen to be sworn to defend with my life the Constitution . . . This I will do, and I am not going to destroy that Constitution through some false idea of protecting it." Two binding holes at the upper edge. The two sheets have smoothed folds, else they are in fine condition.

DWIGHT WILLIAM TRYON (American, 1849-1925) Coastal Scen

Lot 68196: DWIGHT WILLIAM TRYON (American, 1849-1925) Coastal Scen

by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $6,000 - $8,000

Description: DWIGHT WILLIAM TRYON (American, 1849-1925) Coastal Scene, 1887 Oil on canvas 10 x 29 inches (25.4 x 73.7 cm) Initialed and dated lower left: D. W. T. 1887 FROM THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST Dwight Tryon was one of America's first Tonalists, and an influential artist and teacher who popularized the muted, poetic style epitomized by his marsh landscapes and quiet beach scenes, such as the present work of 1887. Born in Connecticut, Tryon developed his technique in France, where he studied at the École de Beaux-Arts in Paris and trained under Charles Daubigny in Barbizon. He returned to United States in 1881 and spent nearly forty years as an instructor at Smith College, eventually being named Director of the Art School. His atmospheric, Barbizon-inspired landscapes won countless honors, including gold medals at the American Art Association, the Carnegie Institute, the Munich Exposition of 1892, the Pan-American Exposition of 1901, and the St. Louis Expositions of 1904. The capitalist Charles Lang Freer was his lifelong patron, and the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. now houses the largest collection of Tryon's work. His paintings are also in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
