by Nate D Sanders

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Dwight D. Eisenhower typed letter signed, dated 7 October 1963 on his personal stationery. Here, Eisenhower writes to his brother, Edgar, discussing a retired Rear Admiral, Chester Charles Ward, and his hysteria over Communism: ''...I assure you that there is nothing complacent in the attitude I take toward the Communist menace and, indeed, I applaud every effort to keep the nation alert and prepared to take care of ourselves. I do think that in this particular case, however, the Admiral has taken too much counsel of his fears -- he tends to be a bit hysterical. Even though almost everything he says has a grain of truth as its foundation, some of the interpretations he makes on insufficient information strike me as being on the extreme side. Devotedly, [signed] D.E.'' Letter measures 7'' x 10.25'' on one page with two holes punched at top and minor toning. Near fine condition.

by Nate D Sanders

2015

USA

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed as General during WWII. Just a month after he conducted the Allied Invasion of Normandy, he writes to his wife Mamie. Dated 11 July [1944] it reads: ''My darling: Seems to me I'm a flea on a hot griddle. Certainly I'm never at one place long. Arrived at my main hq an hour ago (noon) and leave again tomorrow noon. Right now I'm waiting on two men to come in for a conference. Lately I saw a piece in the paper which intimated that on 4 July in France I was exceedingly reckless to 'showing off'. Pay no attention to such tales. I'm most careful - and I'm not talking for effect. Ask [son] Johnny how promptly I duck to the shelter when the 'Buggers' come around! Tell him I spent the last two nights at the camp. I didn't mean to upset you with 'advice'. I was merely philosophizing on the basis of what I thought John needs, etc. Forget it! I'm always a bit off-key when I try to talk seriously - at least when I try to talk about John...It appears that the motion picture thing may go forward. In a way I'm sorry, because from a personal viewpoint none of us has anything to gain - and some embarrassment might ensue. But there IS a possibility of doing good, I think, so any personal embarrassment is worth chancing!...Always your / Ike''. 2pp. letter on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.5''. Toning and creasing, else near fine.

Description: Exceptional Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed from Europe during WWII. The celebrated General writes to his wife, Mamie, dating his letter simply 15 July [1944], one month after D-Day and during the Allies' retaking of Europe. It reads in part, ''...you had the reports on our current operation. Now you can see why I've been talking lately of 'pressure'. Everything is going well at the moment. I hope we can keep on in the same way. My correspondence is in arrears. I owe a hundred letters - but I can't help it. I hear from people who say they are intimate friends - they've become so since my name got into the papers. Butch and I still try to answer all except those palpably looking for a signature - those they throw into the waste basket. My gosh - here is Marshall with the report. Lots of love, my sweet - I miss you terribly! Always your / Ike''. 2pp. on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.5''. Creasing, else near fine.

Description: Dwight D. Eisenhower autograph letter signed to his wife during WWII. Dated simply 5 June, it reads: ''Darling / Starting tomorrow I have a series of trips that will last without interruption from six to ten days. So if you have a lapse in arriving letters, don't jump at the conclusion that I don't want to write - I'll simply have no opportunity to pick up a pen. I'm a bit stymied in my mind as to subjects to write about. So many things are taboo - and the individual with whom you are acquainted (including myself) go along in accustomed ways. Mickey is a jewell [sic]. I often wonder how I existed without him. Anyway the real purpose of this note was to say I'm well, and love you as much as ever, all the time, day and night. Your picture (in a gilt frame) is directly in front of my desk. I look at you all the time. Another is in my bedroom. Loads of love - always. / Your Ike''. 1pp. on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.5''. Light toning and creasing, else near fine.

Morse, at Allied headquarters when surrender documents were signed, reports in a detailed 6pp. account: ''...The colonel of the war room entered. All he said was: 'Fellows, this is it.'...I was so scared I was afraid I wouldn't be able to press the shutter. About 2:30 a.m. the generals started filing in...He then motioned for the Germans to be brought in...General Eisenhower was to meet the Germans...All he said was, 'Do you understand the terms of this unconditional surrender, and are you ready to comply with them?' Then General Eisenhower beamed and wanted pictures with his whole staff...'' Six 8.5'' x 11'' pages are stapled in upper left corner. Light toning and folds, very good condition.
