Lot 76: A.O. MAKSIMOV (DATES UNKNOWN). [WAR LOAN / FORWARD FOR THE MOTHERLAND!] 1916. 38x26 inches, 97x67 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

August 6, 2014, 10:30 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: A.O. MAKSIMOV (DATES UNKNOWN) [WAR LOAN / FORWARD FOR THE MOTHERLAND!] 1916. 38 1/2x26 1/2 inches, 97 3/4x67 1/4 cm. Condition A-: restored loss in lower left edge; minor abrasions and restoration in margins and image; light staining in lower right corner. A medieval Russian knight is galloping off to battle carrying a flag bearing the Romanov coat of arms. As one of the last attempts of Tsarist Russia to raise funds for their doomed involvement in World War I, Tsar Nicholas II abdicated in March 1917. As a result, the Bolsheviks took power. Whether the Russian aristocracy rose to the occasion and contributed to this loan is unclear, but what is certain is that the loan was never paid back. In March 1918, Russia signed a peace treaty with Germany, left the war and repudiated all Allied war loans. Copies of this poster were sent to America from Russia and used (with English text banners) "in conjunction with a film to benefit the work of an American medical relief group" (Theofiles p. 143). Theofiles 194 (var).

Description: 5 U.S. Proof Eisenhower DollarsDenomination Silver DollarDate 1971Country United StatesWeight 39.6oz total 6.6 oz/eachDescription Five sets. These 40% Silver Dollars are set in cases within boxes made to look like woodgrain. The cases, which slide from either the top of the bottom of the boxes, are surrounded by red felt. The coin itself is brilliant and gleaming, inset in a black background. The plastic covering displayes the words "United States Proof Dollar."Condition The coins are all in proof state condition, with no imperfections or smudges.History In 1965, the Mint had begun to strike copper-nickel clad coins instead of silver, due to rises in bullion prices. No dollar coins had been struck in thirty years, and none, initially, were minted in the new metal. Beginning in 1969, legislators sought to reintroduce a dollar coin into commerce. After Eisenhower died in March of that year, there were a number of proposals to honor Eisenhower with the new coin. While these bills generally commanded wide support, enactment was delayed by a dispute over whether the new coin should be in base metal or 40% silver. In 1970, a compromise was reached to strike the Eisenhower dollar in base metal for circulation, and in 40% silver as a collectible. President Richard Nixon signed legislation authorizing the new coin on December 31, 1970.Provenance Putnam County Estate
