Antique Amritsar Rug 3297

Lot 38: Antique Amritsar Rug 3297

by Nazmiyal Auctions

November 6, 2014, 7:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $8,000

Description: Size: 5 ft 11 in x 8 ft 11 in (1.8 m x 2.72 m) - Amritsar, India, Circa 1900 - This antique Oriental Amritsar rug made in India some time around the turn of the twentieth century represents something different in the tradition in which was made. This piece features a design whose form and color are adapted from ancient Egyptian enamel work. Winged discs above and below with a lattice pattern of rosettes and lilies at the sides form the frame, all enclosing an open red field with a solitary floral cross. Perhaps commissioned in India by a deeply religious Englishman with passion for Egypt, this rug is truly one-of-a-kind.

Description: Ex-Marlborough; ex-Marconi ATTRIBUTED TO ANTONIO STRADIVARI (Cremona, b 1644; d 1737) A VIOLIN labelled Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis Faciebat Anno 1718 ASlength of back 14 1/16in., 35.8cm.DocumentsThe certificate of Hamma & Co. Stuttgart, dated 25th September 1925A receipt from Hart & Son, London, dated 5th February 1874The certificate of Léon Bernardel, Paris, dated 23rd April 1923A letter from Joseph Chanot, London, dated 3rd October 1931A receipt from Joseph Chanot, London, dated 3rd October 1931, for repairs to the violinA receipt for Lit. 105,000 from Menotti Benporat, presumably the agent for the seller of the violin, dated 13th August 1931Three handwritten notes from Alfonso Marconi, stating that he purchased the violin in Trieste on 12th August 1931, and a handwritten note of his expenses on the tripA cheque for £1,000, signed by Alfonso Marconi and dated 27th July 1931, presumably part payment for the violinA dendrochronological report from Peter Ratcliff, Brighton, showing various matches to Stradivaris dating from 1713-18 and 1733-4. Stylistically the back resembles more closely Stradivari's work circa 1730ProvenanceThe violin is first recorded in 1874 by Hart & Son, who sold it to Charles McMillan and noted that it had been in the possession of the Duke of Marlborough. In all probability, this was George Spencer Churchill, 5th Duke of Marlborough, who reigned from 1817 to 1840, who was a talented composer and performer. He was famously self-indulgent and spent large sums on books, orchids and violins. He also owned another Stradivari violin of the same year, 1718.In 1923 the violin was in French ownership, and was sold around 1925 to Heinrich Glatz Neumann of Vienna. Glatz Neumann also owned the 1688 'Cazenove, Marylebone' Stradivari cello, now part of the Smithsonian Institute's Stradivari quartet. By 1931 the violin had been sold to Mr. Alfonso Marconi, who only owned it for a few years prior to his death in 1936.Alfonso Marconi, the brother of Guglielmo Marconi, the radio pioneer, was born in 1865 and was nine years older than Guglielmo. He assisted his brother in his early experiments, famously firing the shot which confirmed the successful transmission of a radio signal over a hill in 1895. The signal was sent from Guglielmo's workshop at the Villa Griffone, their family home. Alfonso was a talented violinist, and was often accompanied by his younger brother at the piano. Marconi owned a number of fine violins, including the c1733 'Perkin, Burnford' Carlo Bergonzi and a fine 1689 Rugeri, both of which are now in the collection of the Chi Mei Culture Foundation of Taiwan.

The Mummy (1999) Ancient Egyptian Soldiers Stunt Battle Ax Prop

Lot 1: The Mummy (1999) Ancient Egyptian Soldiers Stunt Battle Ax Prop

by Premiere Props

October 25, 2014, 11:00 AM PST

El Segundo, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $300 - $500

Description: The Mummy (1999) Ancient Egyptian Soldiers Stunt Battle Ax Prop - In ancient Egypt, high priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) starts a forbidden relationship with Anck Su Namun (Patricia Velasquez) , which isn't such a good idea, since she is the Pharaoh's number one mistress. Imhotep is caught and Mummified alive in the City of the Dead of Hamunaptra. This is the beginning of the box-office smash of the remake of the classic "The Mummy" (1999), starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The recreation of ancient Egypt, especially of Hamunaptra is breath-taking as are all the special effects. This is an Ancient Egyptian Soldier's Pharaoh's Guards Battle Ax used in these early sequences. Because it was used in action-battle sequences, it is made of rubber to look like wood and metal. An unusual and dramatic prop! Approx 44" long.
