Nicolaes Eliaszoon Pickenoy, Manner of, Lady's Portrait, 19th C

Lot 4: Nicolaes Eliaszoon Pickenoy, Manner of, Lady's Portrait, 19th C

by Auctionata

January 26, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €2,720 - €3,400

Description: Oil on panel Holland, late 19th century Manner of Nicolaes Eliaszoon Pickenoy (1588-1653) - Dutch painter of Flemish originPortrait of a young womanOverall dimensions: 94.5 x 66 cmGood conditionProvenance: Private collection, Germany The present painting epitomizes the Zeitgeist of historicism and the corresponding interest in costume portraitsThe present portrait of a young woman is the work of an artist active at the end of the 19th century. It is painted in the manner of the portraits by the Dutch painter Nicolaes Eliaszoon Pickenoy (1588-1653) and presumably commemorates the marriage of the sitter. Accordingly, it was most likely intended as a pendant. As it was common in such pairs of paintings, the young woman's three-quarter pose would have matched her husband's position: each would turn slightly toward the other, while facing the viewer. The painter meticulously rendered the details of his sitter's costumes, seen here in this carefully accurate portrait of a middle-class patron. The sitter is distinguished by her costume of rich black satin with a gold-embroidered bodice. Delicate white lace forms her elegant cuffs and headdress. An enormous, pleated collar surrounds her neck. She wears gold jewelry around her waist, neck and wrists. In her left hand she holds a rose as a symbol of purity. The panel is in good order and the varnish is dark. There are small areas of abrasions and a superficial split lower right. The paint surface has partially lifted and has been consolidated to the right lower corner. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered retouching to the background and light lines of restoration to the flesh tones. The fine details are still in good order and the impasto appears very fresh in the lighter pigments. The panel measures 94.5 x 66 cm. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Lot 105: Georges Michel, Circle of, Fields in Stormy Atmosphere, 19th C.

by Auctionata

January 29, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €2,240 - €2,800

Description: Oil on canvas France, mid-19th century Circle of Georges Michel (1763-1843) - French landscape painter Dimensions: 65.5 x 41 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Impressive rendering of a thunderstorm atmosphere The present landscape was painted by an artist probably active in the circle of Georges Michel. The rural setting of the landscape is deeply related to works by the master and depicts a clerical procession of people in the center, crossing the fields towards the village in the distance. The scenery captivates through its dramatic light, which also refers to the artistic tradition of the French landscape painter. Georges Michel is considered one of the pioneers of the Barbizon School and was a great source of inspiration to many artists. The painting is in good condition considering its age. The paint surface shows additional slightly discolored areas of retouching under the naked eye. Inspection under UV light reveals partial areas of retouching mainly affecting the sky. The gilt frame shows traces of wear with partial material losses. The framed work measures 60 x 84 cm and the size of the stretcher is 65.5 x 41 cm.Georges Michel (1763-1843) The Parisian painter Georges Michel received his artistic training under Nicolas-Antoine Taunay (1755-1833). In his oeuvre he primarily painted landscapes which he found during his tours through the Parisian countryside. The windmills around the Montmartre area were, for instance, typical subjects of his artistic output; occasionally he was therefore also called the 'Ruisdael of Montmartre'. Research on Georges Michel only started at the beginning of the 20th century. He is regarded as one of the important precursors of the Barbizon School and his works are represented in many international museums. Only 20 years later, his huge success let him to expand his company out of Lorraine and into Luxembourg. In 1791, the merchant Nicolas Villeroy founded his own stoneware factory. He invented a technique that allowed him to reproduce copper engravings on porcelain and thus be able to produce a decor without having to paint it by hand. Boch himself bought an old abbey in Mettlach at the Saar in 1801 where he began the mass production of porcelain with self-invented machines. To be able to fight younger competitors, Villeroy and Boch merged in 1836. During the 19th century they became the leading company in porcelain, ceramics and tiles. During the two world wars, the company suffered many problems, one them being the separation of the Saar area from Germany. When it was reunited with Germany in 1957, the whole company managed to become a worldwide operating corporation. (tfa) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

In the text Riganzio analyze all the rules promulgate from XIV century on, in a chronological order, without an organic organization by subject; nevertheless information on the courts, spread along the text, can be traced back using an Index added at the time of publication, happened years after the death of the author by order of the Pope and edited by author's nephews, Nicola and Giovanni Battista. Giovanni Battista Riganzio (1661-1735, lat. Johannes Baptista Rigantius), born in Puglia, moved to Rome in 1675 to study law and at the age of 22 he became pupil of cardinale Bandinus Panciaticus (1629-1718). He became later prefect of Congregazione per l'interpretazione del Concilio di Trento. Bibliography: Cfr. M.R.
