Fine European Horse Head Pommel Cutlass with Scabbard and British/Georgian-Era Decoration

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 30, 2016, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $950 - $1,600

Description: Fine European Horse Head Pommel Cutlass with Scabbard and British/Georgian-Era Decoration Measuring 28 1/4 inches overall, the sword is fitted with a 23 1/2 inch curved blade with wide single fullers, a faint Solingen address on the flat spine, and a series of engravings filled with gold wash, mostly scroll and floral designs arranged around the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom (close to but not exactly the pattern of 1714-1800) on the left and a "crown/GR" King George cipher on the right. The hilt is finished in gold, with leaf decorated dual quillions, copper wire wrapped bone grip, and a chain knuckleguard connecting to the horse head pommel. With a black leather scabbard fitted with gilt throat and tip. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Fair. The otherwise good blade shows a dark brown patina overall scattered, moderate pitting overall, with a few brighter areas, traces of gold wash around the ricasso, scattered pitting and a few edge dings. While no documentation is available, the way the fuller runs straight up to the edge near the tip suggests that the sword was one longer, and possibly shortened due to owner preference or tip damage. The hilt retains over half of the gilt finish, with some cracks and chips on the grip. The scabbard is good, with scuffs and cracks on the leather and mild wear on the fittings.

by Houston Auction Company

May 15, 2016, 11:00 AM CST

Houston, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $200 - $400

Description: A VINTAGE AFRICAN TRIBAL COPPER WIRE WRAPPED WOOD AND GILT LACQUERED ENGRAVED STEEL SWORD, POSSIBLY NGBANDI/YAKOMA PEOPLES, CENTRAL AFRICA, POSSIBLY LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY, with a shaped oval black flat pommel on a copper wire wrapped wood hilt, supporting a base of two serrated open wrist cord panels and flaring tipped "mushroom" long curved blade with sharpened edge limited to inside curve and tip, centering a median ridge with a short zigzag engraved detail, total length: 22". NOTE: Yakoma: Fisher and Zirngibl 1978: 79, 88; Benge or Angba (Manfred A. Zirngibl, "'Seltene Afrikanische Kurzwaffen' (Rare African Weapons)", pg. 59). The shape of the stud, blade decoration, and copper wrapped blade most closely resemble the Yakoma example. Cf. McNaughton 1970 fig. 18, described as Upper Congo, Ubangi, Welle, and Aruwimi River areas. Decoration on one side only; sharp only at tip and inside edge. According to Ballarini, the mushroom-projection at the base of the blade would have been for a cord attaching the sword to the wrist. Provenance: Purchased by Mrs. Selden for her husband from the Segy Gallery of New York City, February 22, 1952 and illustrated in the Director of the Gallery Ladislas Segy's book titled, "African Sculpture Speaks," published by A.A. WYN, Inc., New York, 1952.

Condition Report: Good condition, some normal surface buildup and dulled gilt lacquering/patination due to age use and materials. Minor surface marks and tiny scratches throughout.
