Additionally he holds the distinction of surviving in active combat for virtually the entire duration of the war, scoring his first air-to-air kill on 14 December 1939 during the "Phony War", fighting in the Invasion of France, through the Battle of Britain and Normandy Invasion, in the Mediterranean, on the East and West Fronts, during the Battle of the Bulge and the final defense of the German interior. Though not explicitly attributed, Sword #1's unit marking corresponds to J.G.3, Kutscha's posting circa 1943-1944. British Officer's Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Sword with Damascus-Pattern Blade, Gilt Furniture and Prossum-Marked Scabbard

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 11, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,800 - $2,750

Description: British Officer's Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Sword with Damascus-Pattern Blade, Gilt Furniture and Prossum-Marked Scabbard Developed via collaboration between Birmingham cutler Henry Osborne and Flanders Campaign veteran John Gaspard Le Marchant, the 1796 Light Cavalry Sword was the premier fighting sword of its day, inspiring imitation both in Europe and the Americas. While the enlisted men had a very specific regulation pattern, officers had a great deal more leeway, and this example is outfitted with a Damascus pattern blade and a sharply angled mameluke-style grip, seemingly diving deeper into the 1796's Eastern/Mediterranean influences. Overall length is 37 inches, with the 32 3/4 inch blade showing a 9 1/2 inch extended false edge, wide single fullers, a faint etched name (Jon Suttle or Smittle, perhaps) on the right side, and traces of geometric pattern gold embellishment in the area protected by the languets. The hilt is gilt brass, with leaf-shaped decoration, decorative whorls on the quillions, and braided wire wrap on the leather grip. The scabbard is brown leather with gilt brass furniture/reinforcement, with the tip and lower suspension band connected across the back and the merchant mark "PROSSER/late/CULLUM/Swordcutler &/Belt Maker to the/King & HRH/Duke of York/Charing Cross/London" on the throat. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Other Condition: Very good. The blade has been lightly cleaned and has a few areas of spotting and a number of small cracks. A very dark patina is visible under the languets. The hilt is also very good, with over half the original gilt finish, showing a few scratches and scuffs. The scabbard is good, with cracking and traces of a number in white paint on the leather and some cracks and bends in the brass.

Massive Unknown European Flintlock Pistol

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 12, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,000

Description: Massive Unknown European Flintlock Pistol This pistol has no visible markings, the butt/buttcap style frequently seen on European cavalry pistols in the 18th century, a long barrel typical of horse pistols, engraved designs on the side plate, faces on the butt and trigger guard, and carved accents on the stock. Given that it is more elaborate than standard issue cavalry pistols, it may have been privately purchased by an officer. The officer's name was likely marked on the thumb piece on the upper wrist. The serrated frizzen is an attribute more common on Spanish and Mediterranean pistols than those originating in England or France. It is fitted with a false ramrod suggesting it may have been produced as a display piece in the Victorian era. Manufacturer: Unmarked Model: Flintlock BBL: 14 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 63 Finish: unknown Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Poor, relic condition. The metal surfaces have a dark brown patina with oxidation and extensive significant pitting. The stock is fair with some scratches, chips around the inlets, and a repaired forend held in place with wire wrap. There are some small components absent or replaced, and the lock is inoperable.

Scarce Early Virginia Manufactory

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 12, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $5,000 - $7,000

Description: Scarce Early Virginia Manufactory "Hessian" Pattern Confederate Cavalry Sword, Marked to the 4th Virginia Volunteer Cavalry Originally established in 1798, the Virginia Manufactory served as manufactory, armory, barracks and training ground for the "Public Guard" of the state. In 1822, the Manufactory ceased arms production while remaining a central location for the Guard, but the Manufactory was brought back online during the run-up to the Civil War, making new weapons and tapping into the old stockpiles to arm the Confederacy. Among the recipients of the Hessian-pattern swords was the 4th Virginia Volunteer Cavalry, which carried them into action at Gettysburg, 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, and several other notable battles. The 4th broke up during the Appomattox Campaign when all but two members managed to slip through Union lines before General Lee's surrender. Overall length is 44 1/2 inches with a 39 1/4 inch sharply curved double fuller blade stamped "4, Va REGt" on the flat spine. Fitted with the distinct, punched-through sheet metal guard, copper wire wrapped hardwood grip and the flattened helmet pommel with square fastening nut seen on earlier production examples. A similar example can be seen on page 104 of Confederate Edged Weapons by William Albaugh III. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: About good. The blade edge has been sharpened and has a deep brown patina and pitting on the steel overall. Grip is fair with cracking and dents. This is a good example of a scarce confederate Cavalry Saber with Virginia markings.

Rare Virginia Manufactory

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 13, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,500 - $5,500

Description: Rare Virginia Manufactory "Hessian" Cavalry Sword with Scabbard Originally established in Richmond in 1798 and completed in 1802, the Virginia Manufactory was a component of the State's private martial machinery, serving as manufacturer, armory, barracks and training ground for Virginia's "Public Guard", continuing the later functions after stopping production in 1822. In 1860 the manufactory was brought back online, using a combination of new-made equipment produced at the Tredegar Iron Works and machinery captured at Harpers Ferry to become one of the chief suppliers of Confederate Armaments until Richmond was evacuated. Though the manufactory produced no swords during the war itself, it's plentiful stockpile of pre-1822 edged weapons served to equip a number of Confederate units. 43 1/2 inches overall with a 39 inch curved double fuller blade stamped "2" near the pierced-through iron guard, ribbed hardwood grip and a smooth "dove head" style pommel. Included is an iron scabbard with a trimmed drag. A similar blade is illustrated on page 105 of Confederate Edged Weapons by William Albaugh III. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Very good. The steel and iron components show a mixed brown and gray patina, with some mild edge dings on the blade and scattered spotting. Traces of an old protective varnish are also present. Grip is about good with traces of wire and leather wrapping and a crack through the pommel. Scabbard is good with the frog stud absent, split seams and a number of dents and scuffs.

Scarce and Attractive Eickhorn Nazi Justice Official's Sword, with Portapee and Scabbard

by Rock Island Auction Company

September 13, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,750

Description: Scarce and Attractive Eickhorn Nazi Justice Official's Sword, with Portapee and Scabbard Measuring 38 inches overall, with a 33 inch lightly curved single fuller blade, bearing the Eickhorn squirrel logo on the left ricasso. The blackened silver alloy hilt deviates from the traditional stirrup guard pattern of Weimar/Nazi Germany with a widened knuckle bow, a pair of Nazi eagles on the languets and cross guard, both with the heads oriented towards the true edge, a feather-themed pattern overall, alloy wire wrapped black celluloid grip, and an eagle head pommel. With a blue thread accented golden ribbon portapee, matching acorn and a black enamel finished scabbard. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: About good. The blade has a small chip absent from the tip, a number of dings are present on the edge, especially on the middle and upper thirds, scattered scratches and areas of flaking and pitting. This damage is more along the lines of what you would find on a combat blade for an enlisted man, not the sidearm of a high ranking government bureaucrat, and suggest that whoever carried this sword actually had occasion to go blade to blade against someone. Unfortunately, as the identity of the original owner has been lost, this evidence of struggle raises more questions than it answers. The hilt is fine with the fake patina rubbed off of the top of the eagle's head and then ageing naturally over the years. The portapee and sheath both show mild handling marks.

FIRST KNIGHT (1995) - Sir Malagant's (Ben Cross) Hero Sword

by The Prop Store

September 23, 2015, 2:00 PM BST

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £600 - £800

Description: Sir Malagant's (Ben Cross) hero metal sword from First Knight. Malagant wielded his sword throughout the film in his rebellion against King Arthur (Sean Connery) and Camelot. The sword's blade is made from aluminium with blood grooves down the centre and serrated edges running along the edges to the base. The guard and pommel are also made from metal, with brown leather wrapped around the grip. Dents and scratches in the blade imply extensive practical use in the film's sword fights. The pommel and guard are finished in faux-gold paint. Well-used on the production, the paint finish has tarnished with age and there are scratches and marks on the metalwork. The sword remains in good condition. Dimensions: 99 cm x 20 cm x 4 cm (39" x 8" x 1 1/2")
