Fine German Heeren Sporting Rifle By Ersnt Kerner & Co. Of Suhl

Lot 136: Fine German Heeren Sporting Rifle By Ersnt Kerner & Co. Of Suhl

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: serial #5764, 219 Zipper Improved, 26" round barrel with a bright excellent bore. The action of this rifle is nicely engraved in scroll with additional scroll border work and a round panel of punch dot shading on top of action. Around the perimeter of this punch dot section is engraved "ERNST KERNER & CO. SUHL". The barrel is a round tapered barrel with no sights but is drilled for scope blocks and has a nice correct style sling swivel sweated to the bottom of the barrel. The forend wedge key is neatly dovetailed into the bottom of the barrel and there is an additional dovetail beneath the forend indicating that this is a custom barrel adapted from some other rifle rather than being a rechambered or sleeved original barrel. The bottom of the barrel beneath forend is marked "219.ZIP.IMP.". The barrel retains about 90 - 95% original blue finish with loss due to even light thinning. The action retains a pleasing mix of faded original color case-hardened finish and a smooth gray patina. The checkered pistolgrip buttstock and forend are certainly original components and show nice figure and feature a rounded shadowline cheekpiece and a subtle schnabel tip. The stocks rate near excellent retaining 95% original oil finish with strong checkering. The buttplate is checkered horn with moth damage around the top screw while the grip cap is also horn in a shell carved motif. This rifle would be a nice varminter for the handloader or more likely will be rebarreled or rebored to a more popular chambering. A handsome rifle sporting a 14 1/4" length of pull and weighing in a smidge over 6 1/2 pounds. (16520-591) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Smith & Wesson Fourth Model Straight Line Single Shot Target Pistol

Lot 264: Smith & Wesson Fourth Model Straight Line Single Shot Target Pistol

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $3,500

Description: serial #949, 22 LR, 10" barrel with an excellent bright bore. This lovely pistol retains about 99% original blue finish with a slight amount of wear at the muzzle and a few scattered light scratches. The smooth walnut grips have gold Smith & Wesson medallions and exhibit light handling wear in the guise of dents and scratches. Both grip panels are correctly numbered to the pistol and all appropriate parts are correctly numbered to the gun. Included is a blued S&W embossed metal case with scattered light oxidation blemishes for a rating of about 60%. Inside the green felt is starting to fray along the edges, thinning in random areas with a few holes starting to form especially under the cleaning rod. Also included is a two piece cleaning rod with some dents on the handle and a modern jeweler's screwdriver. This is truly a crisp example of a fourth model with lots of finish and a tight action. Winchester Model 71 Deluxe Lever Action Carbine

Lot 270: Winchester Model 71 Deluxe Lever Action Carbine

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: serial #18047, 348 WCF, 20" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel shows 90% original blue with the loss due to light silvering at the muzzle as well as sparsely scattered light scuffs and evidence of use in the field. The receiver shows 85-90% original blue with silvering at the high edges and thinning to gray at the point of carry. The lever shows thinning original blue at the sides, with the remainder now aging to mottled pewter gray. Exposed portions of the magazine show strong original blue, with the magazine cap showing as primarily pewter gray. The nosecap has aged to mottled pewter brown with traces of blue in recessed areas. The walnut pistolgrip buttstock and forend feature finely checkered panels with light soiling and a few flattened points. Strong original finish remains on the wood surfaces, now wearing thin on the underside of the forend and with the left side of the buttstock appearing slightly dull and lightly surface sanded. The sanding is unobtrusive and affects the finish only. Numerous scuffs and light impressions are scattered overall. Two tight 1" hairline cracks are present on either side of the wrist, as well as a 1/4" tight crack emanating from the upper tang. The cracks appear stable and are visible upon close inspection only. The original checkered blued steel buttplate is intact, now wearing to silver on the higher surfaces. Super grade swivel studs are intact, as are correct super grade swivels. The carbine is sighted with the original hooded ramp front, blank in rear slot, and a riding bolt peep sight. Overall a pleasing long tang deluxe carbine that shows some honest use, and would make a fine woods rifle today. Manufactured in 1940. (146520-409) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]

Description: Oil on panelGermany, circa 1900Portrait of Sibylle von Freyberg, born Gossenbrod (1479-1521)Copy after a painting by Bernhard Strigel (around 1465/70-1528 ), Alte Pinakothek MunichCoat of arms painted on the reversePartly gilt wood frameOverall dimensions, framed: 69 x 44.5 cmProvenance: Private collection, GermanyAt the time of historicism, old German paintings were rediscovered, including the present one by Bernhard Strigel, an icon of the German portraitureThe present portrait painting is the work of a German artist from around 1900. It is a copy of a painting by Bernhard Strigel, now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Already in his lifetime, Strigel's paintings were much copied. The present painting shows a portrait of Sibyle von Gossenbrod (1479-1521), the wife of Ludwig von Freyberg zu Öpfingen. The painter of the present composition has remained faithful to Strigel's painting, adding however a scroll that reads: „tis Bild ist nach Frau Sibilla von Freiberg ganz gerecht als lon arbeit /wie gesehen gar in der kleidung und bunt die seliglich gar 42/ jar irs alters aus diesem Jamertal verschaiden der alhmechtig/got wel ir sel genedig und barmherzig sein" (sic).Sibylle von Freyberg wears contemporary cloths and sits in front of a brocade curtain next to a window with a view of an open landscape. She wears the guild chain of the Swan Order around her neck. The back shows the painted coat of arms of Freyberg. There are some paint losses and framing marks. Inspection under UV light reveals small and large areas of retouching to the sky, the flesh tones and the clothing, some of them discolored. The wooden frame shows some wear and areas of restoration. The overall dimensions, framed, are 69 x 44.5 cm. The panel measures about 59 x 34.5 cm.Bernhard Strigel (1461-1528)From Memmingen, the painter Bernhard Strigel was born in a family of artists, and strongly influenced the Memminger School in Upper Swabia. In his early work, he was under the influence of the Ulm school. Later he was inspired by the Dutch examples. He worked as a court painter to Maximilian I, and painted numerous portraits that have been copied several times. Remarkably, the Emperor chose neither Dürer, yet Burkmaier or Breu for this position. Strigel's portrait of Maximilian is the only known portrait of the Emperor in full coronation regalia. Many of Strigel's works are still located in their original locations, including the works in the Blaubeuren monastery. In Memmingen, there is the Strigel Museum. Other works are on display in important museum collections, including the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg, the Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart or the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
