Description: ATTRIBUTED TO ELISHA TAYLOR BAKER (CT/NY, 1827-1890) - American Merchant Schooner "J. Waterberry" oil on canvas, circa 1870, unsigned. The boat has a black hull with clipper bow, painted trailboards and red and white stripes below the rail. The vessel's name is painted at the top of the rail below the aft deckhouse, and she is flying a blue pennant with "JW" in white. The American flag aft has grey shadowing typical of Baker's handling, the sky and water have his luminous touch, as does the water breaking at the bow and past the stern. Housed in a fine replica gilt cove gesso frame. OS: 27 3/4" x 37 3/4", SS: 20 1/2" x 30 1/2". Cleaned but not relined, fine craquelure.

Description: AMERICAN ITINERANT ARTIST - Portraits of George & Harriet Montgomery Dixon of Worcester, Massachusetts, circa 1850, unsigned, oil on canvas adhered to board, in the original gold painted gesso corner frames, OS: 36" x 31", SS: 31" x 28", rippling to his image. George Dixon was born 5/6/1804 in Plainfield, CT, son of Thomas Dixon (177-1856) and Ruth Shepard (1778-1846). He was in the rug manufacturing business in Worcester, dies at his home, 34 St. John Street, on 1/11/1891. Harriet was born in Rupert, VT. 10/9/1810, daughter of Asa Montgomery and Barbara Kennedy of Voluntown, Ct. She also died at home on 4/22/1876. They are buried at Hope Cemetery in Worcester. Their tombstone is a large cross with an even larger anchor superimposed.
