Each blossom has an embroidered name, forty-nine on the quilt, six on the sham; some have dates. 76" x 80" & 17" x 70". Toning and minor soiling to the quilt. The Reverend, of the United Presbyterian Church was an important figure in Los Angeles, CA; came to Nabb that year to raise funds for a Sunday School building.

From 1891 to 1915 he served in the USA Indian Police on the Cheyenne River Reservation, rising to the rank of first lieutenant. He went on government pension in 1928. He lived in Bridger, South Dakota, and was an active member of the Upper Cheyenne Congregational Church, for which he was a layman for 10 years and a deacon for 26. His wife's name was Mary."

Douglas' was built in 1903 for the shoe titan of that name at the Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, Mass. She was the first six-masted steel-hulled schooner, launched Aug 25, 1903. Re-named the 'Delaware Sun' in 1912 when purchased by the Sun Oil Co, she could cross the Atlantic under sail in 45 days, she sank off Sabine, Texas in 1918.

Lower basket, in typical form, is also completely of wicker, suspended from two loops. Four-legged walnut frame. Made on the island circa 1880-90. 32" tall, 15 1/2" diam. Minor loss to the rim of the hanging basket. Nice patina. Very similar to one on page 46 of "The Lightship Baskets of Nantucket; A Continuing Craft", David H. Wood, Curator, published by the Nantucket Historical Society in 1994 as a catalog for their show. A copy is included.

Oil on canvas, unsigned, artist identified on Childs Gallery of Boston label verso. In vintage lemon gold molded frame. OS: 24 1/2" x 31 1/4", SS: 21 1/4" x 28". Relined, fine overall craquelure. Flushing refers to Vlissingen, Netherlands, seen on right. The artist, who resided there, was the son of reverse glass master Petrus Weyts. The ship, built in Black Rock, Connecticut in 1856, is flying the flags of the US, France, Finland and the Star of David. The ship was condemned in the Falklands, remained in use as a warehouse into the 1960s, portions have been salvaged for a local museum. She was the last surviving 'packet' ship in the world.
