by Swann Auction Galleries

August 6, 2014, 10:30 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: JAMES MONTGOMERY FLAGG (1870-1960) WAKE UP AMERICA DAY. 1917. 41x27 3/4 inches, 104x70 1/2 cm. Condition B+: abrasions in image; repaired tears and overpainting in margins; vertical and horizontal folds. On April 6, 1917, the United States Congress declared war on Germany. Over the next two weeks, the Recruiting Committee of the Mayor's Committee on National Defense organized one of New York's largest public recruiting campaigns in history (a campaign that was also nationwide). The day chosen to "Wake Up America" was April 19, the anniversary of the Revolutionary War battles of Lexington and Concord. It was on the night prior to these two historic battles that Paul Revere took to his horse and made his famous ride announcing to American colonists that the British were coming. The event, to be held on the 142nd anniversary of Revere's ride, was a giant parade down 5th Avenue, which attracted over 60,000 spectators. Airplanes, "the Paul Reveres of the skies," dropped appeals for recruits all over the city. Flagg supervised the construction of ten floats for the parade, several of which he actually designed himself. Given the short time between the declaration of war and the massive event, Flagg had to design this poster very quickly, which likely explains why it is composed of fewer colors than his normal lithographic work. The image, evoking a female Paul Revere emerging from the darkness, was not just a graphic flight of fancy. The "Wake Up America Day" celebrations began at midnight with a reenactment of Paul Revere's ride made by a young woman. Jean Earle Mohle, dressed as a Continental soldier, rode south through the streets of Manhattan "summoning the men of America to respond to their country's call" (New York Times, April 19, 1917). This is an image which Flagg, in his "only attempt at modernity" (Meehan 20), captures magnificently. Flagg 69, Modern American 25, Rawls 136, Borkan p. 178.

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $15,000

Description: GEO HAM (GEORGES HAMEL, 1900-1972) MONACO / 5ÈME GRAND PRIX AUTOMOBILE. 1933. 46 1/4x30 3/4 inches, 117 1/2x78 cm. Monegasque, Monte-Carlo. Condition A-: light foxing in lower image; minor creases in margins; unobtrusive horizontal fold. The Monaco Grand Prix, a Formula One motor race through the streets of Monte Carlo in the small principality on the French Riviera, was first held in 1929. Organized by the Automobile Club of Monaco it was the first race to be held solely within the country's borders. Robert Falcucci designed the posters for the race's 2nd, 3rd and 4th meetings using dynamic, street level views of the powerful automobiles and the exotic vistas and landmarks of the city. Using a similar style and graphic treatment Geo Ham designed this poster and then continued to design for the event through 1937 and then again in 1948. "To accentuate the speed of the race, he set [this] scene as a spectacular, road-level perspective placing the viewer only a few yards behind the speeding "French Blue" Bugatti just exiting the tunnel a few lengths behind a red Alfa Romeo and several other cars as they approach the finish line" (Crouse p. 24). Crouse p. 25, Riviera 259, Affiches Automobiles cover and p. 92, Riviera 259, Azur 333.

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: ALICE RUSSELL GLENNY (1858-1924) WOMENS EDITION / (BUFFALO) COURIER. 1895. 25 1/2x15 1/2 inches, 64 3/4x39 1/2 cm. The Courier Litho Co, Buffalo, New York. Condition B+ / B: repaired tears in margins and image; discoloration and minor restored losses at edges. Trained in Paris and in New York as a painter specializing in murals, Alice Russel Glenny designed only two posters (the other was for the Buffalo Fine Art Academy & Society of Artists). With a "firm and assured" hand, she produces a perfect archetypal Art Nouveau portrait of a woman that is less rigid than most of the American Art Nouveau images of the time. This explains the success that this image had in America and in Europe, where it was considered one of the best American posters. "The design has the cool, classical frontality that could be perfectly at home in one of McKim, Mead, and White's classical-revival buildings" (Kiehl p. 187). Maitres pl. 60, Etrangeres (with wrong attribution), Kiehl p. 34, Margolin p. 182.

Description: ROGER BRODERS (1883-1953) GRASSE. 1927. 42x31 1/2 inches, 106x80 cm. Lucien Serre & Cie., Paris. Condition A-: repaired pin holes in right margin; minor abrasions in image. Framed. This is Broders' first poster where his figures take on a stylized, elongated, Art Deco look. As such, it is a watershed image that heralds his entrance into the next stage of his artistry. "It perfectly displays the talent and technique of the artist who plays with shadow and light and whose light-handed but firm design and pastel colors, succeeds in evoking the pleasant atmosphere of a peaceful and quiet resort where pedestrians stroll under a canopy of trees" (Azur p. 135). Broders p. 89, Perry / Broders p. 25, Riviera 63, Azur 162, Zagrodzki 240.
