Sam Francis, Monoprint, Untitled, USA, 20th C.

by Auctionata US

June 6, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $8,000 - $12,000

Description: Monoprint on wove paperUSA, second half of the 20th centurySam Francis (1923-1994) – American Abstract Expressionist painter Signed in pencil lower right ‘Sam Francis’Indistinctly inscribed in pencil lower leftFull sheet printed with deckled edgesDimensions: 22 ¼ x 27 in. (56.5 x 68.6 cm.)Very good conditionEstimate $8,000-$12,000With a continual interest in color, light and space, painter Sam Francis’s works draw influence from many sources, including Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting and Impressionism. The monoprint presented here demonstrates these themes through the gestural strokes, bold areas of color, and use of a light ground. Typical of Francis, he composes the work around the edges of the paper, leaving the center intentionally blank to focus our attention on the stillness and lightness of the center. Executed in the second half of the 20th century, this monoprint on wove paper is signed and indistinctly inscribed in pencil. The full sheet is printed with deckled edges, measuring 22 ¼ x 27 inches. In overall good condition with no evidence of tears, toning, stains or repairs. Sam Francis (American, 1923-1994)California-born Abstract Expressionist painter Sam Francis, is regarded as one of the 20th century’s leading interpreters of color and light. His first works were influenced by the Abstract Expressionism of Mark Rothko, Arshile Gorky, and Clyfford Still, but he quickly developed his own colorful abstract style after moving to Paris in 1950. In addition to New York Abstract Expressionism, his work holds references to Color Field painting, Chinese and Japanese art, French Impressionism, and his own California roots. Throughout a long and prolific career, Francis created thousands of paintings as well as works on paper, prints, and monotypes. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

(78.7 x 47.6 cm.)Estimate $20,000-$30,000It is extremely rare to find a full set of this important early graphic work by Sam Francis which includes an original gouache. In addition to being a dynamic tour-de-force of Sam Francis’s practice as a printmaker and colorist, “The Pasadena Box” demonstrates the artist’s interest in Japanese calligraphy. Influenced greatly by Abstract Expressionism and French Impressionism, the interplay of negative space and bursts of color can also be attributed to his study of Japanese calligraphy during his frequent visits home in Japan. Highlighting this influence is Francis’ use of ground, namely the handing silk scroll and folding screen, in addition to the more traditional wove papers and gouache. Published by the Pasadena Museum of California Art – near Francis’ native home where he spent the end of his life – this suite captures the integrity of one of California’s most prominent artists of the 20th century. Executed in 1963, this complete set of eight color lithographs on BFK Rives, one color lithograph on Shirikawa rice paper mounted on a hanging silk scroll, three color lithographs on Kochi rice paper mounted on a folding screen are each signed and numbered thirteen from an edition of one hundred. With an original gouache, original acrylic box, justification page, and original poem stamped with Doc Irving Group seal, the full sheets are printed. The prints have various dimensions and are all in overall good condition with no evidence of tears, toning, stains or repairs. Please note the acrylic box has been cracked on one side and bears remains of tape. Throughout a long and prolific career, Francis created thousands of paintings as well as works on paper, prints, and monotypes Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

(59.1 x 46.4 cm.)Very good condition Estimate $2,000-$4,000In an explosion of primary colors, this lithograph by Abstract Expressionist Sam Francis reverses the artist’s typical exploration of central negative space. Instead, the colors are concentrated at the center of the page, built on top of one another in defiance of gravity. White space surrounds the splatters of ink at the center, almost as if it is expanding into this blank space in infinite proportions. Executed in 1963, this color lithograph from three zinc plates on ivory wove paper is signed and numbered ‘Bon à tirer’, the final trial proof from the edition. Printed by Irwin Hollander and published by Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Los Angeles, with their blind stamps, the full sheet is printed with deckled edges. The sheet measures 23 ¼ x 18 ¼ inches. Mat tape from previous mounting verso, otherwise in overall good condition with no evidence of tears, toning, stains or repairs. A bold explosion of red, yellow and green overtakes the image, giving the impression of expansion over the blank areas of paper. Smaller splashes of color serve as satellite forms, enhancing the relationship between positive and negative space. Executed in 1987, this color lithograph on wove paper is signed and numbered twenty-seven from an edition of fifty. Printed by George Page and published by The Litho Shop Inc., Santa Monica, the full sheet is printed with deckled edges. The sheet measures 45 x 27 ¾ inches. Buchanan, James

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: Buchanan, James. Manuscript quotation signed as Secretary of State, 1 page, Washington, late 1848. Being an excerpt from a letter, meant for publication, that President James K. Polk had Secretary of State Buchanan send to William V. Voorhees, the on-site agent of the United States in California, containing the official statement of policy of the United States government and conveying to the people of California the lofty views of President Polk respecting their condition and prospects. The excerpt reads: "Whilst the other nations of the world are distracted by domestic dissensions, and are involved in a struggle between the privileges of the few and the rights of the many, Heaven has blessed our happy land with a Government which secures equal rights to all our citizens, and has produced Peace, Happiness and Contentment throughout our borders. It has combined Liberty with Order, and all the sacred and indefeasible rights of the citizens with the strictest observance of law...." Written in brackets after this is "From the letter of Mr. Buchanan, Secretary of State of the U.S. conveying to the people of California the views of President Polk respecting their condition and prospects.--October 7, 1848." The quotation is signed by James Buchanan and a scroll at lower left has "Signature autograph."California became the property of the United States after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed in February 1848 (effective May 30) ended the Mexican-American War (1846-48). After Mexican authority lapsed, the U.S. government did not step immediately into the breach and Californians were concerned about their status. On August 14, 1848, President Polk signed "An act to establish certain postal routes" and "to make arrangements for the establishment of post offices and for the transmission, receipt and conveyance of letters in Oregon and California." William V. Voorhees was named the U.S. agent for this purposeWith the discovery of gold on the American River near Sacramento on January 24, 1848, came a huge increase in population and a pressing need for civil government. The Gold Rush hastened California's entry into the Union as the 31st state on 9 September 1850.The body of this manuscript was written for Buchanan by Adam J. Glossbrenner, who was Clerk of the State Department during Buchanan's tenure there. Glossbrenner was later Sergeant-at-Arms for the House of Representatives and then Buchanan's private secretary. Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500 The Arden Family Holdings of Beverly Hills.
