Lesser Ury, Etching, 'Regennasse Tiergartenallee', 1921

Lot 12: Lesser Ury, Etching, 'Regennasse Tiergartenallee', 1921

by Auctionata

January 28, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €3,200 - €4,000

Description: Etching on ribbed paper Lesser Ury (1861-1931) - German painter and graphic artist Signed lower left in pencil 'L. Ury' Numbered lower right in pencil '56/100' Full title 'Regennasse Tiergartenallee mit Pferdedroschken: Dame mit Schirm überquert die Straße' (Rain wet Tiergarten Avenue with hackney cabs: Woman with umbrella crosses the street) From: Adolph Donath: 'Lesser Ury. Seine Stellung in der modernen deutschen Malerei' Published by Verlag Max Perl, Berlin 1921 Issued in an edition of 110 copies Catalog raisonné: Rosenbach 49 In gilded frame Plate dimensions: 19.3 x 13.7 cm Provenance: Private collection, Austria Good condition Typical Berlin street scene by the German artist Lesser Ury; the auction record for an etching by the artist is currently set at €9,600 This etching by the German artist Lesser Ury was created in 1921 and was bound to the deluxe edition of the monograph 'Lesser Ury. Seine Stellung in der modernen deutschen Malerei' by Adolph Donat. Berlin street scenes are a popular motif of the artist. Here the Tiergarten Avenue is shown with hackney cabs reflecting effectively in its rain-wet surface. The etching is signed lower left in pencil 'L. Ury' and numbered lower right in pencil '56/100'. It shows very occasional tiny foxmarks and is mounted to a mat at the reverse upper corners. The sheet is slightly discolored within the mat window. Overall the condition is age-appropriately good. The frame is in good condition with slight signs of wear. The plate measures 19,3 x 13,7 cm, the sheet 30.2 x 24.2 cm. The framed dimensions are 41,7 x 31,5 cm.Lesser Ury (1861-1931). Lesser Ury was born in 1861 in Birnbaum near Posen. After his father's death the family moved to Berlin in 1973. After his secondary school certificate Ury initially started a business training, but he dropped out after a year to go to the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. In 1882 he studied at the Académie Royale in Brussels, in 1883 under Jules Joseph Lefebvre in Paris. Until 1986 he continued his studies at the academies in Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Munich. 1889/1890 Fritz Gurlitt showed the first exhibition of the artist, but it was no success. Lesser Ury traveled a lot in the following years. In 1914 he began at the suggestion of colleagues to engage in printmaking. When Paul Cassirer exhibited Lesser Ury's work in 1916 both the public and the press were enthusiastic. 1921, he was made an honorary member of the Berlin Secession. Until his death in 1931, the artist created an extensive body of work comprising oil paintings, drawings and prints, which was close to the style of Impressionism. According to legend the lucky gods arrive in town on their 'treasure ship' Takarabune on New Year's Day. The ship carries seven intangible treasures including wisdom, knowledge, experience, erudition, bravery, prosperity and longevity as well as happiness and satisfaction. The gods are worshiped as Daikoku, with his rice sack and hammer of happiness, Ebisu, god of fishing, Benzaiten or Benten, the woman among the lucky gods, Bishamon-ten, guardian god of the North, Hotei, god of happiness, and Fukurokuju and Jurojin, the gods of longevity. Ferdinand Knab (1834-1902), Temple Ruin at Sunset, 1904

Lot 124: Ferdinand Knab (1834-1902), Temple Ruin at Sunset, 1904

by Auctionata

January 29, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €1,600 - €2,000

Description: Oil on canvas, relined Southern Germany/Italy, 1900/4 Ferdinand Knab (1834-1902) - German architecture and landscape painter Signed and dated lower right 'F. KNAB 1904' Dimensions: 28.5 x 37 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Ferdinand Knab was an academic painter of architectural fragments in atmospheric landscapes; his paintings fetch up to €23,000 at international auctions This poetic depiction of a temple ruin is a typical composition by the Munich painter Ferdinand Knab. His architectural motifs were deeply related to his impressions of Italy, where he had been travelling for a year. The present scenery shows a ruin covered with thick vegetation and beautiful rose bushes. The architecture is presented at sunset that renders the painting its romantic touch. The center reveals a delicate depiction of a woman dressed with flowing fabrics so that she appears like an ancient sculpture. The painting is in good condition considering its age. It is signed and dated lower left 'F. KNAB 1904'. The canvas is relined and shows light marks, where the frame has rubbed. The varnish is clearly browned, especially in the areas of the sky. The stucco frame is in good condition with small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 47 x 56 cm and the size of the stretcher is 28.5 x 37 cm. Ferdinand Knab (1834-1902) Ferdinand Knab was born in Würzburg and was initially trained in architecture. In 1859 he moved to Munich, where he attended the painting classes of Arthur von Ramberg (1819-1875) and Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1886). Later in 1868 he traveled to Italy, where he discovered his passion for romantic Ruin landscapes. Ferdinand Knab was a very sought after artist during his life time and was occasionally commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria for the Munich Residenz and the Linderhof Palace. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
