Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: Tempera on gold and silver ground on wood Russia, 18th century Icon: Three-Handed Mother of God A very special icon of the 'Three-Handed Mother of God' is located at the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece.Dimensions: 31 x 26.5 x 2.5 cm (height x width x depth)Good condition This beautiful icon portrays the so called 'Madonna Tricherusa', the three-handed Mother of God, which emerged from the miraculous story of St. John of Damascus. Being a Syrian monk and priest, John was once a great defender of the veneration of icons. As this was regarded as great blasphemy, the caliph ordered John's right hand to be cut off and hung up in public view. This led John to pray in front of his icon of the Mother of God during all night, who in turn miraculously restored his right hand. In gratitude for this wonderful healing, John attached a silver hand to his icon, which thereafter went down in history as the 'Three-Handed Mother of God'. Our Mother of God is portrayed half-length, pointing at her Son and turning her gaze towards the viewer. The Christ Child is seated on his mother's right forearm, signing in benediction and holding a closed scroll which reminds of his role as a prophet. The third hand, which alludes to the miraculous story of St. John of Damascus, appears at the lower centre. The initials of the Mother of God and the title of the particular icon are written with gold letters on blue ground in the background which is typically coloured in gold and silver. The icon is framed by a border which is decorated with interlaced patterns that emulate contemporary Russian enamel work. The icon is in a good, satisfactory condition with only small traces of age and use. The gold and silver coloured background is slightly rubbed off at some areas. The varnish is partially matte or slightly stained. There are some tempera abrasions here and there. An eyelet can be found on the verso for hanging purposes. The wooden panel has a slight convex curve and measures 31 x 26.5 x 2.5 cm (height x width x depth). Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Due to the legal obligation for the resale royalty in the art market the following applies: As a result of its membership in the AV Kunst, Auctionata charges additionally to the hammer price the contribution to the AV Kunst of currently 2.1% of the revenues from the sale of fine arts and photographs pro rata towards the buyer. More information about royalty right in our T&C.

Lot 1169S: ON GOD'S FOOTSTOOL BY BRUCE GREENE

by Artistic Holdings Company

July 26, 2014, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $240 - $300

Description: On God's Footstool By Bruce Greene - Edition Size: Open - Giclee On Canvas, Open Edition Signed Dimensions: 12 X 18 Release Date: 3-2012 ???.bruce Greene Is A Western Painter Who Has Ridden Trails And Experienced The Cowboy Life He Portrays In The Very Narrative Images He Creates. The Artist Is A Native Texan Who Has Reached The Pinnacle Of His Profession Through Hard Work And An Extraordinary Talent For Painting The Story Of One Of Our Country?s Most Revered Icons, The American Cowboy. His Scenes Of Contemporary Cowboys Going About Their Daily Work Are Admired And Collected Across America. Several Years Ago, Bruce Began Making Annual Trips To Join In The Spring Work On The Legendary Ja Ranch In The Palo Duro Canyon Of North Texas. As Greene Describes His Trip, ?i Go Up There And Stay On The Chuck Wagon With The Ja Hands And The Neighbors That Have Come To Help. We Ride A Lot Of Miles In Rough Country. It Can Be Cold, Hot, Windy, And Wet. As A Matter Of Fact, It Can Be All Of These In One Day. A Fella' Could Get Lost In Some Of The Mesquite Or Cedar Thickets. Of Course, We Work A Few Cows On Our Place And Help Out A Neighbor Now And Then, But The Ja Trip Has Been A Real Inspiration For Me Each Year. I Am Absolutely Sure That This Experience Has Greatly Affected My Artwork. It Seems Necessary, To Me, In Order To Depict The Contemporary Cowboy With Accuracy And Feeling. My Good Friend, Red Steagall, Calls It ?getting The Dust In Your Nose.? For Me, That Dust Makes The Difference.? One Of Greene?s Most Enjoyable, Recent Projects Was Creating A Painting For The Texas Rangers Association Foundation Commemorating And Honoring The History And High Standards Of The Texas Rangers. The Painting, Titled ?the Ranger Code,? Was Purchased By Members Of The Foundation?s Board And Is In The Permanent Collection Of Outstanding Ranger Art At The Texas Ranger Museum In Waco. Greene Was Elected To Membership In The Prestigious Cowboy Artists Of America In 1993 And Served As Its President In 2003. The Artist And His Family Live On A Small Ranch In The Historical Community Of Norse, Near Clifton, Texas. Greene?s Studio Sets On The Edge Of A Hill Behind His Home. From This Vantage Point, Large North Windows Offer A Continuous View Of The Texas Hill Country, A Few Hereford Cows, And The Occasional Whitetail Deer. ?it Is A Wonderful Blessing To Be Able To Make A Living For My Family Doing What I Love In This Beautiful Place,? Says Greene. Greene?s Works Are Represented By Several Well Known Galleries In The Southwest. He Has Presented His Art In Annual Shows And Exhibition Such As The Cowboy Artists Of America Exhibition, The Prix De West Show At The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, And The Autry Museum Of Western Heritage Sale, Just To Name A Few, And Other Prestigious Venues.

MORGAN WEISTLING - REFLECTION OF GOD

Lot 1417W: MORGAN WEISTLING - REFLECTION OF GOD

by Artistic Holdings Company

July 26, 2014, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $150 - $187

Description: Morgan Weistling - Reflection Of God - Open Edition Canvas Image Size: 11"w X 14"h.?.the Difference Between A Magnificent Work Of Art And An Illustration Lies In The Artist?s Passion For The Subject At Hand. Such Is The Case With The Power Of Morgan Weistling?s Christian Art. ?colossians 1:15-20 Speaks Of Christ?s Supremacy And Of His Being The Image Of The Invisible God. Studying This Passage Brought The Scene Of Jesus? Baptism To My Mind,? Says Artist Morgan Weistling. ?i Chose To Depict A Quiet Moment While Jesus Was In The Jordan River To Be Baptized By John. I Wanted To Focus On Christ Alone, Looking To His Father In Heaven, As He Fulfilled God?s Promise To Send A Savior. His Reflection In The Water Extends Forward, Reaching Out To Us, The Viewers, As Does Christ Himself With His Immeasurable Gift Of Salvation. My Prayer Is That This Painting Will Not Only Proclaim The Deity Of Christ But Will Encourage The Viewer To Answer The Question That Jesus Asks All Of Us: ?who Do You Say I Am?? (matt. 16:15).?

Andreas Ritzos- Mother of God of Passion

Lot 861: Andreas Ritzos- Mother of God of Passion

by ArtVipCharity.com

July 26, 2014, 10:00 AM PST

Santa Fe, NM, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $900

Description: Andreas Ritzos- Mother of God of Passion on canvas 16 x20 inches

Condition Report: This is new in mint condition. Andreas Ritzos-Limited Edition Giclee on canvas Mother of God of the Passion. 16x20 The icon with the motif Mother of God of the Passion was extraordinarily popular in the Cretan icon-painting of the late 15th and the 16th century, and is venerated both by Orthodox and by Catholic Christians. This type takes its name Mother of God of the Passion from the fact that the Christ-child, sitting on the left arm of His mother, is turning towards the Archangel Gabriel, who is depicted floating in from the right holding out a Cross. From the other side the Archangel Michael approaches, holding further symbols of the Passion, the Spear and the Holy Sponge. Possibly the invention or at least the popularization of this icon type is due to the important painter Andreas Ritzos. Three signed Madonnas of the Passion by him are known. The painting style of these signed icons corresponds so closely to that of the Mother of God of the Passion in Recklinghausen as to allow an attribution of the latter to Andreas Ritzos too. In all the icons, a striking feature is the perfect technical execution, and the smooth surfaces of the flesh depiction, which are modelled by a large number of delicate, parallel white brush-strokes.

YURI PAVLOVICH ANNENKOV - Mixed Media on paper, mounted on board

Lot 993: YURI PAVLOVICH ANNENKOV - Mixed Media on paper, mounted on board

by Stanford Auctioneers

July 27, 2014, 8:00 AM PST

Phoenix, AZ, USA

Estimated Price: $70,000 - $80,000

Description: Yuri Pavlovich Annenkov (Russian, 1889-1974). "Constructivist Composition (Reklame-Verkauf)". Mixed Media on paper, mounted on board. 1921. Signed and dated in pen in the image, lower right. Composed with oil, watercolor, gouache, and crayon, painted on a single sheet of newspaper ("Le Nouveau Journal de Strasbourg" October 1920 issue). The sheet is mounted to a firm but flexible contemporary board. Provenance: Private collection, Kentfield, California; formerly collection George Wittenborn, Wittenborn Art Books, New York City, sold in the 1950s; acquired by Wittenborn during or shortly after the second of the Adolfo Muller-Ury estate sales at the Plaza Art Galleries in New York City in December, 1947. The second sale included material from consignors in addition to the Muller-Ury estate. It is doubtful that the picture was owned by Muller-Ury; rather, a different consignor in the second Plaza sale. As the noted art historian Stephen Conrad has indicated about this painting, "The fact that it [our example] appeared in the second of his [Muller-Ury's] estate sales at the Plaza Art Galleries in New York in December 1947 is not proof of his ownership, the reason being that many lots in these sales were from other vendors...It remains highly unlikely that he [Muller-Ury] would have owned anything as modern as this constructivist work, as he is on record in the 1940s as saying, 'The saddest thing on God's earth is modern art?'". While Annenkov is best known for his portraits, like other Russian artists of his time he was influenced by the Constructivist movement, the artistic and architectural force that originated in Russia in 1919. Our rare and superb example of Annenkov?s Constructivist oeuvre was painted at the froth of that movement. Overall size: (board) 17 5/8 x 13 3/4 in. (448 x 349 mm). Image size: 17 5/8 x 12 5/8 in. (448 x 321 mm). [24951] |35000| {R100}

Condition Report: Composed with oil, watercolor, gouache, and crayon, painted on a single sheet of newspaper ("Le Nouveau Journal de Strasbourg" October 1920 issue). The sheet is mounted to a firm but flexible contemporary board.
