Castelli, Transfiguration of Christ

Lot 29: Castelli, Transfiguration of Christ

by Bibliopathos

July 9, 2014, 7:00 AM PST

Verona, Italy

Estimated Price: Log in or create account to view price data

Description: ANNIBALE CASTELLI(Bologna, 1573-dopo il 1623)Transfiguration of Christ Black ink pen watercolored and white lead on brown prepared paper, 13x9,2 inches (331 x 233 mm) Inscription Annibale Castelli in brown ink on the passepartout.Definitely well preserved, this drawing represents, with unusual closeness to the Evangelic event, the episode in which Jesus Christ revealed his Holy Nature to his disciples Peter, James and John (Matthew, 17, 1-13; Mark, 9, 2-13; Luke, 9, 28-36). After having led them to the top of Mount Tabor, the Savior face became shining as the sun, and his clothes got a dazzling glimmer; at his side appeared Moses and Elijah, that started to talk with him, while a shining cloud surrounded them and a voice from the sky said "this is my favorite son". The rediscovery of Annibale Castelli is due to some recent studies (Roio 1994, pp 99-1106; id., 1996; id., 1997, pp. 67-70, Cat. nn. 35-38).First pupil of Carracci's and then, because of the quarrels started in their school, faithful pupil of the rival "Accademia" created by the talented Pietro Faccini, Annibale was then a talented painter, with great technical and stylistic capabilities, author of masterpieces of refined late-manneristic elegance, as well as trusted collaborator of the master Faccini, whose unfinished work he completed.Notwithstanding Castelli had not much support from the official art criticism, he should have had a good glamour among the artist of his age, being part of the Painter Council in Bologna, close to important masters as Ludovico Carracci and Giacomo Cavedone.Only in the last period the Castelli's catalogue has been enriched with new paintings and some drawings: the last are quite easily recognizable because, in the graphic style, they are very close to his peculiar modus pingendi, luminous and vivid. This stylistic peculiarity, besides the old inscription on the passepartout, made it easy to attribute in a convincing manner the Christ Transfiguration to Castelli, and also to reconnect to it some other papers that presented almost identical typological characteristics.

Condition Report: Special Notice No buyer's premium will be charged on the hammer price.

Description: THE MOST IMPORTANT MYTHOLOGICAL MANUAL UNTIL THE LATE SIXTEENTH CENTURYBoccaccio, Giovanni. Della geneologia de gli dei di m. Giouanni Boccaccio libri quindeci. [20], 268. Text in italic type. Title vignette; initials; head- and tail pieces.Fine Venetian edition of Boccace's «Genealogy», a scholarly treatise on ancient Greek and Latin mythology, that remained the most important mythological manual until the late sixteenth century.Genealogia deorum gentilium, known in English as «On the Genealogy of the Gods of the Gentiles», is a mythography or encyclopedic compilation of the tangled family relationships of the classical pantheons of Ancient Greece and Rome, written in Latin prose and here translated by Giovanni Betussi. The work is defined by Encyclopedia Britannica «humanist in spirit and medieval in structure». According to the Preface Boccaccio undertook the project at the request of Hugh IV of Cyprus. The first version was completed in 1360, and he continuously corrected and revised the work until his death in 1374, so that various redactions of the works were copied in different manuscript traditions. In his lifetime and for two centuries afterwards it was considered his most important work. The full range of genealogies of the classical Gods are described in the fifteen books, drawing on the standard earlier works. According to Malcolm Bull, «Boccaccio does his best to make sense of the complex genealogy of the gods. But as he also allows for several gods of the same name, the result becomes enormously confusing. No subsequent mythographer followed his method of organizing material, yet Boccaccio's Genealogia retained its prestige and was to remain the most important mythological manual until the late sixteenth century». The Genealogia was unkindly described by Edward Gibbon as «a work, in that age, of stupendous erudition, and which he ostentatiously sprinkled with Greek characters and passages, to excite the wonder and applause of his more ignorant readers.Boccaccio was responsible for spreading the story, which he credited to Theodontius, that Demogorgon was the ancestor of all the heathen gods - based on a misspelled scholion to Statius, which had intended to claim ancestry for Plato's Demiurge. This gave rise to a literary and iconographic tradition lasting to John Milton and Shelley. From the earliest manuscripts, some believed to be Boccaccio autographs, diagrammatic family trees are included, which are thought to be the earliest non-Biblical uses of this type of graphic, which was already used in the form of the Jesse tree in art.The last two books of the work include a defence of poetry that is his latest and most extended discussion of the subject.Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) was an Italian author, poet, correspondent of Petrarch, and important Renaissance humanist. Boccaccio wrote a number of notable works, including the Decameron and «On Famous Women». As a poet who wrote in the Italian vernacular, Boccaccio is particularly noted for his realistic dialogue, which differed from that of his contemporaries, medieval writers who usually followed formulaic models for character and plot.References: Adams, B-2176. Description: THE «HOLLANDIC HIPPOCRATES»: DEFINITIVE VAN FOREEST EDITION, PRINTED BY PLANTINForeest, Pieter Van. Observationum et curationum medicinalium libri duo: XXIV. De renum affectibus ac morbis. XXV. De vesicae malis ac affectibus. Etiam adjectis scholiis, in quibus eorum causae, signa, prognoses, curatio graphice depinguntur. Accessit D. Johannis Heurnii ad D. Petrum Forestum De humana felicitate libellus. Lugduni Batavorum (Leida): Ex Officina Plantiniana, apud Franciscum Raphelengium (Plantin), 1596. 8vo, contemporary pigskin with elaborated blind-toolings, ff. [32], 521, [15].The definitive edition, printed by Plantin, of Foreest's «Observations and Therapies», a large collection of annotated medical case histories formed on his personal perceptions of patients and diseases, according to his practical and Hippocratic vision of medicine. He continued to increase this work, until the last year of his life. Pieter van Foreest (Alkmaar, 1521-1597), also called with the Latin name Petrus Forestus, was one of the most prominent Dutch physicians of the Renaissance, also known as the «Hollandic Hippocrates». During his practice years in Alkmaar, Forestus began to take notes on the maladies of his patients, and how he treated them. Later he arranged the data and eventually collected over 1350 Observationes with appropriate Scholia. Foreest had an aversion to quacks, charlatans, and the unauthorized practice of medicine. In 1584 he managed to convince the Delft magistrates to place rules and restrictions on the practice of medicine. After the assassination of Prince William of Orange on July 1584, Forestus conducted his autopsy and embalming. Heirs of Hippocrates, 328: «He studied medicine in Italy and was a pupil and colleague of Vesal. His wide-ranging interests included botany, and he brought a large number of medical plants with him when he returned to Holland. He was a prolific writer and began publishing his observations in 1588. At the time of his death, this comprehensive series on diseases numbered thirty-two books».To the work is bound Johan van Heurne's booklet titled «On Human Happiness».References: OCLC, 14297528. Description: THE PIONEER OF SPANISH LANGUAGE IN ITALYFranciosini, Lorenzo. Parte prima. Rome: Stamperia della Reuerenda Camera Apostolica, 1638. [together with:] Franciosini, Lorenzo. Vocabulario español, e italiano en esta tercera impression corregido, y añadido por su verdadero auctor Lorenzo Franciosin florentin [...] Segunda parte. En Roma: en la emprenta dela Reu. Camera Apostolica, 1638. 2 volumes in large 8vo, contemporary limp vellum with handwritten title at spine, pp. [4], 834, [2]. Scarce third and most complete edition of Franciosini's Italian-Spanish and Spanish-Italian vocabulary, the basic tool for learning the Spanish language in Italy until the 19th century. According to a practice already common at the time of Franciosini, the vocabulary (first published in 1620) is preceded by some basic rules «to read and write in Castilian language», that formed the outline of the Grammar published for the first time four years later. The importance of the dictionary is in the wealth of the words listed according to the scriptures more modern, and the thoroughness of the explanations given. This is not just a list of isolated terms: there are included phrases and sayings that still may be useful to translators from Spanish. Franciosini is author of the first translation in Italian of Don Quixote, with the title L'ingegnoso cittadino Don Chisciotte della Mancia (Venice, 1622-1625) and of some operettas that contributed in a decisive way the penetration of Castilian in Italy.
