McKinley, William

Lot 54: McKinley, William

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

April 19, 2014, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $250 - $300

Description: McKinley, William. Autograph note signed ("W McK") as President, at the bottom of a typed letter on Executive Mansion letterhead by his secretary to R.A. Alger, Secretary of War, recommending Col. Henry Page for a position in the department, 1p, 9 x 5", Washington, June 23, 1898. The secretary writes, "The President directs me to ask if there is a vancancy in your Department," but McKinley obviously wanted to make sure of the appointment, so he wrote at the bottom of the letter, "When there is a vacancy appoint. WMcK June 30/98." Perhaps Col. Page had been in McKinley's unit in the Civil War. In any event, the Spanish-American War was in full swing at this time and Page was obviously eager to be a part of it. Some toning and expected folds, else very good. The Arden Family Holdings of Beverly Hills. Estimated Value $250 - 300.

Lot 88: Clay, Henry

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

April 19, 2014, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $600

Description: Clay, Henry. (1777-1852) Lawyer and statesman famed for his oratory. He served three terms as Speaker of the House of Representatives and was Secretary of State from 1825 to 1829. His three attempts at the presidency--in 1824, 1832 and 1844--all came to naught. In 1824, he threw his electoral votes to John Quincy Adams, who made him secretary of state; the Jacksonians denounced this "corrupt bargain." Along with Daniel Webster and John C. Calhoun, he formulated the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Compromise of 1850. Lincoln was a great admirer of his. Autograph document signed ("H. Clay"), 2pp, 12 1/2 x 7 1/2", Lexington (Kentucky), n.d. (c. 1800). Addressed "To the Honble the Judges of the District Court of Lexington sitting in Chancery"; Clay represents James and Lucy Barbour and William and Fanny Johnson in a land case. Fine. Henry, Patrick

Lot 112: Henry, Patrick

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

April 19, 2014, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $4,000

Description: Henry, Patrick. (1736-1799) American statesman, orator, and founding father, best remembered for his rallying cry: "Give me liberty, or give me death!" Henry's Virginia contemporaries recognized him as "the man who gave the first impulse to the ball of revolution."Autograph letter signed ("P. Henry"), as a member of the House of Delegates of Virginia, 1p, 5 x 8 1/4" (Virginia), Sept. 26, 1782. To Major (Peter) Hairston, who was the sheriff of Patrick Henry County: "I send you Certificates for L3.2, which he owes me for my Wages below, & desired me to give you an order to receive, for which I have his letter. I send also 1 Guinea, 1 pistole, being every farthing I can raise. I count the gold L2.10.0 and the whole L19.12. I am in hopes to collect some more today at court, as I am going there if the pain does not stop me, & expect to see you there." Paper is toned, with some contemporary ink blots, but boldly penned and signed. Notes on verso are probably in the hand of Sheriff Hairston and are unrelated to Patrick's letter. The Capt. Saunders mentioned in the letter was Henry's fellow delegate from Patrick Henry County to the Virginia House of Delegates. He had apparently borrowed money from Henry, which was taken from Henry's salary as a delegate. In this letter, Saunders' funds are being redirected to repay Sheriff Hairston on account of Henry's taxes. Henry lists the amount of money he had been able to come up with, a combination of a bank note, pounds sterling (a guinea was 27 shillings), and a pistole (a Spanish gold coin). The Arden Family Holdings of Beverly Hills. Estimated Value $2,000 - 4,000.
