Lot 72: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962). ST RAPHAEL. 1952. 61x47 inches, 156x119 cm. Affiches Gaillard, Paris.

by Swann Auction Galleries

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $1,800

Description: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) ST RAPHAEL. 1952. 61 3/4x47 inches, 156 3/4x119 1/2 cm. Affiches Gaillard, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears and restored losses at edges, some affecting image; creases, abrasions and restoration in margins and image. As Zagrodzki notes in his book, Loupot's work for St. Raphael "can be qualified as the work of his life." From 1937-1960, Loupot worked hand-in-hand with Max Augier, the advertising director of St. Raphael, creating a series of posters that tell of a unique saga in the story of advertising. Beginning with the poster that features the stylization of red and white clad waiters, Loupot gradually moved towards creating more and more abstracted images. Starting in 1945, Loupot began experimenting with his geometric stylizations of two waiters and his continuous transformation of typography. Of historic note, between 1945 and 1952, poster publicity for aperitifs was forbidden in France, so although this poster is dated 1947 (the year it was designed), it would not have been printed before 1952. Zagrodzki p. 93, Loupot 89, Encyclopedie de l'Affiche p. 172.

Description: RICHARD BECK (DATES UNKNOWN) ORIENT LINE CRUISES. 1937. 39x24 1/2 inches, 99x62 1/4 cm. The Baynard Press, London. Condition B: overpainting and restoration in margins, corners and along vertical and horizontal folds. This rather daring photomontage utilizes two prominent Surrealist elements; a mannequin and a sea shell. Two white cruise ships are only suggested in the background. Tom Purvis, writing in Poster Progress, a book published shortly before the Second World War, displays three of Beck's posters and explains that they "show a distinct trend in poster design. The artists assemble material, combining photography and drawn design in some novel or striking arrangement" (Poster Progress p. 93). Beck designed several photomontage posters for the Orient Line and also designed the poster for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. rare/span. Poster Progress p. 55, Voyage p. 154, Poster Art In Australia p. 25.

SAM HYDE HARRIS (1889-1977). SOUTHERN PACIFIC'S NEW DAYLIGHT. 1937. 23x16 inches, 58x40 cm.

Lot 98: SAM HYDE HARRIS (1889-1977). SOUTHERN PACIFIC'S NEW DAYLIGHT. 1937. 23x16 inches, 58x40 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: SAM HYDE HARRIS (1889-1977) SOUTHERN PACIFIC'S NEW DAYLIGHT. 1937. 23x16 inches, 58 1/2x40 1/2 cm. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image; repaired pin holes in corners. Harris was born in England and moved to Los Angeles when he was 15. His career began as a commercial artist, painting notices on sides of buildings, creating signs and billboards, designing posters and typography and more. In 1920, he was hired by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company to design posters. He also worked for the Southern Pacific. "The major portion of the advertising appeared in brochures, magazines and newspapers, but local advertisements were in the form of billboards and hand-painted posters that appeared in department stores, banks, displays in windows and bulletin boards in ticket offices and lobbies" (Harris p. 18). In the 1930s, "streamlined trains were among the most striking, visible and accessible examples of Modernism" in America (Zega p. 104). "The streamliner was perfectly suited to the poster medium; its smooth airflow profile offered the prospect of a respite from America's stylistic preoccupation with realism" (ibid). This scarce/span poster is an excellent example of American modernist design. Zega 141, Harris p. 103, Affiche Art Deco p. 86.

Description: REMO MURATORE (1912-1983) LOTTERIA IPPICA DI MERANO. 1949. 38 1/2x53 1/2 inches, 98x136 cm. N. Moneta, Milan. Condition B: expertly replaced margins; overpainting, restoration and restored losses in image. Muratore was an influential graphic designer who worked for the Avant-Garde magazine, Campo Graphico in the years before the Second World War and joined Studio Boggeri in 1937. After the war, along with Max Huber and Luigi Veronesi, he founded a prestigious advertising school in Milan called the Scuola Pubblicita Rinascita. There, they taught students who would later become among the elite of Italian art directors. Also an architect, Muratore won two gold medals at the Triennial of Milan in 1940 and 1954, and worked for RAI, Pirelli and the Piccolo Theater of Milan. Like his friend and colleague Max Huber, Muratore created visual arrangements based on a modern use of photography with bold colors, such as this sophisticated photomontage promoting a lottery.

CHARLES DELAUNAY (1911-1983). ALIX COMBELLE ET LE JAZZ DE PARIS. 1941. 47x31 inches, 120x79 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $1,800

Description: CHARLES DELAUNAY (1911-1983) ALIX COMBELLE ET LE JAZZ DE PARIS. 1941. 47 1/4x31 1/4 inches, 120x79 1/2 cm. Condition B+: repaired tears, restored losses and overpainting in margins; abrasions and scratches in margins and image; restoration along horizontal fold; pin holes in upper corners. Charles Delaunay was the son of painters Robert and Sonia Delaunay. Charles played a pivotal role in the development and success of jazz in France. He co-founded a jazz society called the Hot Club de France, and in 1935, Jazz Hot, the first French magazine dedicated to jazz. In 1937, working with Pathe Records, he launched a jazz label, Swing, making albums with such stars as Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Django Reinhardt and Alix Combelle. Combelle is depicted in this poster leading the Hot Club de France orchestra. From his parents, Delaunay inherited a strong artistic sense that he used to promote his various projects. He designed the Swing label and also various posters. This poster is not only a rare and wonderful jazz document, but also, it is surprising that in 1941 the occupying German forces would have allowed a poster with the words "Jazz" and "Swing."

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: HENRI MATISSE (1869-1954) L'ART INDEPENDANT AU PETIT PALAIS. 1937. 29 1/4x19 1/2 inches, 74 1/4x49 1/2 cm. Mourlot, Paris. Condition B+: folds and creases in upper margin and image; tape along tears on verso. Paper. This seminal poster was the first printed to promote an official exhibition, of art owned by French institutions, in France. "Les Maitres de l'Art Independant," held at the Petit Palais, was organized as part of 1937's Exposition Universelle. The curator, Raymond Escholier, wrote in the preface to the exhibition's catalogue that Independent Art "was emphatically not all contemporary French art. It was one of its aspects, that which, for thirty years, has made an impact abroad . . ." (Art in France, p. 12). The poster was printed by Fernand Mourlot who went on after World War II to print posters for all the major French artists of the Ecole de Paris. Mourlot worked with Matisse on this project (the first time the two men collaborated), using the artist's painting, Le Reve (1935). The painting was brought to Mourlot's studio at the printing plant where Matisse "transformed freely the reproduction and did the same for the typography" (Mourlot p. 12). In addition to works by other artists, the exhibition contained 61 paintings by Matisse, 42 by Rouault, 33 by Bonnard, 29 by Braque, 27 by Leger and 32 by Picasso. Mourlot Affiches p. 12, Kunst-Ereignisse 56.

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 29, 2014, 10:30 AM EST

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: PAUL GAUGUIN La Femme aux Figues. Etching on cream laid paper, 1894. 265x415 mm; 10 1/2x16 3/8 inches, full margins. Third state (of 3). A very good, well-inked impression. According to Boyle-Turner, "This controverisal print has been assigned to Seguin, to Gauguin, and even to a collaboration of both artists." The artist Armand Seguin (1869-1903) was a close friend of Gauguin during the late 1880s/early 1890s. Based on the etched inscription upper left, "Chez Seguin à St. Julien," the scene takes place at Seguin's Breton home in Pouldu. Current scholarship regarding authorship for the print leans toward Gauguin, in its similarities to other of his Breton female portrait compositions. Kornfeld 25.

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 29, 2014, 10:30 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $50,000 - $80,000

Description: HENRI MATISSE La Persane. Lithograph, 1929. 448x290 mm; 17 5/8x11 3/8 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered 44/50 in pencil, lower right. A superb, richly-inked and strongly-printed impression of this very scarce, important lithograph. Born in the north of France to a family of weavers and grain merchants, Matisse (1869-1954) grew up in a rustic, pre-industrial town. In 1889, after passing the bar exam and becoming a law clerk (which he found exceedingly tedious), he was diagnosed with appendicitis. During his convalescence, his mother bought him art supplies and it was only then that he began to paint. He left for Paris in 1891 to begin his formal art education. Matisse went to the traditional schools and was trained in the academic manner, a background evidenced by his early drawings. Nevertheless, he soon began to experiment with the flurry of new styles and movements taking shape at the time, fraternizing with other Post Impressionists and influential contemporaries in Paris, aligning himself with a group of like-minded artists who would become the Fauves. Matisse and the Fauves met great criticism when they debuted in Paris at the famous Salon d'Automne in 1905. This exhibition gave birth to the moniker, Fauves (meaning "wild beasts"), because of their perceived violent disregard for realistic use of color and form. While he exhibited with other Fauves such as Derain, Vlaminck and Van Dongen, Matisse experienced the lion's share of criticism for his painting Woman with a Hat, 1905. In this early work, Matisse fused Pointillist color theory with Cézanne's rich, painterly impasto in what contemporary critics regarded as a disregard for artistic sanctity. After his initial adherence to Fauvism, Matisse explored varied styles and themes. In the latter years of his life, after having battled cancer and confinement to a wheelchair in 1941, Matisse focused on collage using paper cutouts (see lot 381). La Persane, considered among Matisse's most important lithographs, marks what is known as his "Nice period," spanning approximately 15 years from around 1917 to 1930, during which he lived in the south of France and focused on portraits of female models dressed in exotic, foreign costumes set before decorative backdrops. Though primarily known for his paintings and sculptures, Matisse was also a prolific printmaker, producing over 800 individual prints (typically in editions of 25 to 50) from 1900 to 1954. He moved freely between various printmaking techniques and used each as an extension of his drawing style and process. The imagery he created often was repeated forms of reclining nudes, portraits and dancing bodies drawn with elegant and energetic contour lines. For Matisse, printmaking spurred creativity and innovation while also enabling him to produce further works in multiples to satisfy the increasing demand for his art. While Matisse's prints are still relatively under-appreciated next to his paintings and sculptures, their wide dissemination and demand undoubtedly contributed immensely to his position as a preeminent artist of the 20th century. Duhuit 507.
