Both on thin imitation Japan paper, circa 1935. Both later impressions, printed circa 1970. Both signed and titled in pencil, lower margin. These two proofs are from Woodruff's Atlanta Period series of linoleum cuts, which he made while teaching at Spelman College from 1931-46.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, Washington, DC. This is a large, early example of Sam Gilliam's works on paper that imitated his experimental draped canvases and floor paintings of the same period. They were also stained and saturated--the reaction of the thin paper to the wet paint was incorporated into the image-making.
