Description: PETER BEHRENS (1868-1940) DEUTSCHE WERKBUND - AUSSTELLLUNG. 1914. 35x24 1/2 inches, 89x62 1/4 cm. A. Molling & Comp., Hannover. Condition B+: minor losses, flaking and repaired tears in margins; creases and abrasions in margins and image. Mounted on Japan. The Werkbund exhibition in Cologne in 1914, was the showcase of what would become a worldwide example for industrial design. JOHANNES MOLZAHN (1892-1965). WOHNUNG UND WERKRAUM. 1929. 23x33 inches, 59x83 cm. Friedrichdruck, Breslau.

by Swann Auction Galleries

May 7, 2015, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $8,000 - $12,000

Description: JOHANNES MOLZAHN (1892-1965) WOHNUNG UND WERKRAUM. 1929. 23 1/2x33 inches, 59 3/4x83 3/4 cm. Friedrichdruck, Breslau. Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and abrasions at edges and along vertical and horizontal folds; minor loss at top edge; pin holes in corners. Mounted on Japan. Molzahn was a painter, printmaker, graphic designer, theorist and teacher. Although he was never officially a member of the Bauhaus, his work did appear in the group's third portfolio. In 1928, his seminal essay, "Stop Reading, Look!" hailed photography as the powerful new universal medium that would become a liberating means of communication. In 1929, he designed this and one other poster for an architectural and design exhibition in Breslau, Dwelling and Workplace. It is a tour-de-force of photomontage, typography and layout, in which all the elements of design and construction are represented. In 1938, Molzahn left Germany for America (seven of his artworks had been put on display in 1937 at the German Degenerate Art Exhibition). He taught at Moholy-Nagy's School of Design in Chicago from 1943-1947 and returned to live in Germany in 1959. Estimated Price: $2,500 - $3,500

Description: W. VAN ANDRINGA DE KEMPENAER (DATES UNKNOWN) RAI. 1935. 38 1/2x27 1/2 inches, 97 3/4x70 cm. Joh. Enschede en Zonen, Haarlem. Condition B+: restoration and overpainting along vertical and horizontal folds; minor abrasions in image. Japan. The RAI in Amsterdam is a massive complex of meeting halls and convention centers. Prior to 1961, when it opened in its current location, the RAI was located on Amsterdam's Ferdinand Bolstraat. The initials are taken from the Rijwiel en Automobiel Industrie, a bicycle and automobile manufacturing trade association that first opened the hall in 1893. Here, the recognizable arch of the building's entrance is visible, augmented with modern neon-like lettering (which did not appear above the building as illustrated). Kempenaer adds a glowing tail light to increase the intensity of the nighttime atmosphere. This is the larger format.

JOHN LENNON (1940-1980) & YOKO ONO (1933- ). WAR IS OVER! / IF YOU WANT IT. 1969. 25x19 inches, 63x48 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

May 7, 2015, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: JOHN LENNON (1940-1980) & YOKO ONO (1933- ) WAR IS OVER! / IF YOU WANT IT. 1969. 25x19 inches, 63 1/2x48 1/4 cm. Condition B / B+: skinning and creases in image; time-staining at edges. Mounted on Japan. As part of their activism for peace (which included bed-ins) John Lennon and Yoko Ono launched a major media campaign in 1969, in which they purchased space on large billboards in 12 major cities around the world. The giant signs they pasted up read "War is Over / if you want it / Happy Christmas from John and Yoko." Flyers with the bold, simple typographic message were distributed to passersby, and smaller posters were printed to be hung in windows of private homes. A savvy and prescient move (some cynics have said it was done for profit), the campaign received a tremendous amount of media coverage. Nevertheless, John and Yoko provided a generation of war-weary youth a new slogan to embrace. In 1971, they released a song "Happy Xmas (War is Over)," which has become staple on holiday playlists. This is the Canadian variant. The Poster 664 (var).

MARCEL DUCHAMP (1887-1968). DADA 1916 - 1923 / SIDNEY JANIS. 1953. 38x25 inches, 96x63 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

May 7, 2015, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: MARCEL DUCHAMP (1887-1968) DADA 1916 - 1923 / SIDNEY JANIS. 1953. 38x25 inches, 96 1/2x63 1/2 cm. Condition B+ / B: fading in text; stains in bottom margin; repaired tear in right margin, through text; minor repaired tears and restored losses at edges. Mounted on Japan. "The Dada catalogue took its place among Duchamp's unique publishing events. Designed as a poster on a 25-by-38-inch sheet of thin, foldable parchment paper, it listed all 212 items and included four short essays by Arp, Tzara, Huelsenbeck and Levesque. These essays were set in blocks of contrasting type running diagonally down the sheet - a text descending a staircase. Duchamp then overprinted the whole page in a bright red-orange, announcing the exhibition with letters that recall original Dada typography. When the painstakingly produced catalogue was finally received, Duchamp has been reported, took a sheet in his hands, crushed it into a loose ball, and suggested that a trash can full of these paper balls be offered to visitors entering the vernissage. Duchamp, characteristically, did not attend the opening." (Caroll Janis, Art in America June-July, 2006). Avant Garde p. 178.

TADANORI YOKOO (1936- ). HAVING REACHED A CLIMAX AT THE AGE OF 29, I WAS DEAD. 1965. 40x29 inches, 103x73 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

May 7, 2015, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $20,000 - $30,000

Description: TADANORI YOKOO (1936- ) HAVING REACHED A CLIMAX AT THE AGE OF 29, I WAS DEAD. 1965. 40 1/2x29 inches, 103x73 3/4 cm. Condition B+ / B: water staining in margins and lower left image; abrasions and darkening at edges. Hand-signed and numbered 13 out of 50 by the artist in blue pen. Silkscreen. Paper. Framed. Yokoo can be credited as the artist who introduced Pop Art to Japan. His earliest work was done in silkscreen, resulting in brighter colors. Yokoo designed this poster for an exhibition entitled Persona at Tokyo's Matsuya department store in November, 1965. The image, commenting as it was on the stifling nature of Japanese society on artists, was shocking, sensational and became an instant classic. It is extremely rare to find posters from Tadanori Yokoo's early career during which his printing runs were short and few were kept. Tadanori Yokoo p. 69, Musee de l'Affiche / Yokoo p.1, Modern Poster 275, Avant Garde p. 184, Plakat Kunst p. 168, Enyclopedie de l'Affiche p. 273, MoMA 696.1966.
