JAMES A. M. WHISTLER Yellow House, Lannion.

Estimated Price: $30,000 - $50,000

Description: JAMES A. M. WHISTLER Yellow House, Lannion. Color lithograph printed in green, gold, gray and back on cream wove Japanese vellum, 1893. 242x162 mm; 9 5/8x5 3/4 inches, full margins. First state (of 3), before the additional gray-toned color stones. Signed with the butterfly in pencil, lower right. Printed by Belfond, Paris. Ex-collection Albert W. Scholle (Lugt 2923a, verso). A superb impression of this exceedingly scarce lithograph with strong colors. This is one of two color lithographs (and 5 black and white lithographs) that Whistler drew while traveling through Brittany in the summer of 1893. The Parisian printer Belfond assisted Whistler with the printing of both color lithographs, though their collaboration was abruptly terminated soon after the lithographs were completed due to Whistler's perception that Belfond had sold a proof the artist had given him without permission to do so. This would explain the scarcity of Yellow House, Lannion. According to Spink, et als, "By 10 December 1893 Whistler wrote to Edward Kennedy (his New York gallery) in reply to a request from the dealer for two proofs of 'the house in yellow and green,' that he had no impressions left. He explained that he had 'only very few' before his falling out with the printer, and now was unable to print more." Spink, et als, note additionally, "At the time of the artist's death, no impressions of Yellow House, Lannion remained in Whistler's estate. Apparently the Ways (his principal lithographic printers) never owned an impression either; when the Whistler Memorial Exhibition in London was organized in 1905, most of the lithographs were lent by Thomas Way, but this image was borrowed from Mrs. Katherine Furse." Spink, et als, cite only approximately 20 known impressions in all 3 states and only 7 in the first state alone. We have found only 6 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Way 101; Levy 106; Spink 67.
