Description: Title: The Rising WindArtist: Montague DawsonPublisher: Frost & Reed Limited of Bristol and LondEngraver: UnknownDescription: "The Rising Wind"This painting had been created with careful attention to detail. A sailing ship is caught in a surge of waves, with the white caps rolling over the side and onto the deck. The perspective is from that of a person standing at the bow and looking over the entirety of the ship as it leans. Men on board struggle to find a hold as the water washes over them. The complex nets of rigging remain intact, keeping the sails up as the ship attempts to make it through the rough seas in one piece. Of note is the lack of a storm, it is a foreboding wind that rocks the ship in the painting, a warning of worse to come.Date: 1969Frame: WoodFramed Size: 42.5x32.5"Work Size: 33x23.5"Weight: 16.6lbsCondition: This print is in excellent condition, no tearing or marks.Meta: Sailing, Ship, Sail, Ocean, StormProvenance: Connecticut EstateHistory: Sea painter, Montague Dawson was born in Chiswick, England in 1890, the son of Charles Ernest Dawson and Florence Hope Dawson (nee Bithrey). His mother died in 1893, giving birth to her seventh child, also named Florence Hope. Dawson was the grandson of Henry Dawson and nephew of Henry Alfred Dawson, both landscape and marine artists of note. Dawson began drawing as a child, and completed his first painting, a watercolor sunset, just after his fifth birthday. Dawson never attended art school, but took every opportunity of looking at paintings and absorbing the methods of the masters. Early in his youth, the family moved to Southampton Water where Dawson enjoyed fishing, sailing, and watching the great ships of the world anchoring in the harbor. Around 1910 Dawson joined a commercial art studio where he worked on posters and developed his skill of illustration. C. Napier Hemy RA, who lived at Falmouth, had a great influence on Dawson's career as an artist. Dawson used to visit him as a young naval officer during the Great War. "After that," Dawson recalled, "there was never any question of my doing anything else apart from paint." Indeed, he was always able to live on money earned from his pictures; at the age of eight he sold one for two shillings and sixpence. "I thought I was made," he said. Dawson joined the Royal Navy with the onset of the First World War and continued to paint. He became a regular contributor to the Sphere magazine with pictures and reconstructions of the war at sea. In 1918 when the German fleet surrendered, a whole issue of the periodical was devoted to his portrayal of that historic event. Following the war he became a professional painter and illustrator and began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, although in latter years he contributed less frequently. His reputation grew steadily so that by the 1930's he was already firmly established among the leading marine painters of the day, with a steady output and increasingly important commissions. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, presented his painting of the Royal English Yacht Blue Bottle to the Duke of Edinburgh. American Presidential Collections have contained examples of Dawson's work. Dawson's method of working was to make a preliminary study of his subject on oils, based on careful research, before beginning the larger version. His knowledge of the sea and ships, and his dedication to technical accuracy, combined to give him complete assurance that his work was as close to a truthful representation as he could make it. When he painted, he identified himself completely with the event. "You really are there", he said. " You can hear the sea." As he saw it, accuracy in seascape or landscape painting had little to do with photographic exactness. "But if the memory of how it looks is clear, that is what the painter has put down." Dawson researched carefully for a painting and never knowingly left an inaccuracy uncorrected even for the sake of artistic effect. The rigging, for example, is painted with minutest care, not merely in physical detail, but also in the relative tension of the ropes and intricate shadows and patterns. He would often work quickly on a picture, completing in one session a work, which up until that point might have occupied many weeks. To him, marine painting combined the freedom of landscape painting with the disciplines of portraiture; the elements may be imaginatively painted but the ship must be a likeness both in detail and in character. "You must be quite certain that she is sailing with the wind in the proper quarter - if she is on port tack, you must make sure the sails are filled from the port tack." His subjects ranged from recording the Battle of Trafalgar, moments from American War of Independence, the return of the CUTTY SARK, and very often the races between the tea clippers returning to London from China. His father and grandfather were both marine painters, and this maritime background was reinforced when, early in his life, his family moved to Smugglers House on Southampton Water, on England's south coast. Dawson never went to art school but, around 1910, he joined a commercial art studio in London, working on posters and illustrations. Joining the Royal Navy at the outbreak of the First World War, Dawson met Charles Napier Hemy who was to have a great influence on the young man's art.Dawson had supplied illustrations to the Sphere magazine during the First World War and after the war set up as a painter and illustrator. He concentrated on historical subjects and sailing ships, usually under full sail on the deep ocean. He achieved great commercial success starting in the 1920's, showing at the Royal Academy from 1916 to 1936 and regularly at the Royal Society of Marine Artists, of which he was a member.Dawson moved to Milford-on-sea in Hampshire in the 1930's. In the Second World War, he illustrated events of the war for the Sphere and afterwards continued a painting career that was financially one of the most successful of the 20th century. He died in Sussex in 1973.

2 Bottles 1995 & 1996 Château Lafon-Rochet, Saint-Estèphe

Lot 32: 2 Bottles 1995 & 1996 Château Lafon-Rochet, Saint-Estèphe

by Auctionata

August 13, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €90 - €110

Description: One bottle of Château Lafon-Rochet, 1995 vintage; Robert Parker (1998): 89/100; James Suckling (2007): 89/100 One bottle of Château Lafon-Rochet, 1996 vintage; Robert Parker (1999): 90/100; James Suckling (2007): 90/100 Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux/France Original filling quantity: 0.75 l Fill level: into neck This lot comprises one bottle each of the 1995 and 1996 vintages of Château Lafon-Rochet from the Saint-Estèphe appellation in Bordeaux. With a cultivation area of around 1,250 hectares located directly on the left bank of the Gironde, Saint-Estèphe forms the northernmost appellation in Bordeaux. Because of its proximity to the sea and the associated small differences in climate, the wines feature higher tannin levels, a more powerful structure and somewhat higher acidity than those of Southern neighbors. Most vineyards located here attempt to balance this with a higher proportion of Merlot in their wine compositions.Château Meyney is located in the same area and is considered to be among the vineyards that laid the foundations for winegrowing in Bordeaux. An abbey was located here whose monks produced wine from as early as the 13th century. This tradition has remained unaltered and continues to this day. During the famous Bordeaux classification of 1855, only 5 Châteaus in Saint-Estèphe made the cut. Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose as Deuxièmes Crus, Calon-Ségur as Troisième Cru, Lafon Rochet as Quatrième Cru and Cos Labory as Cinquièmes Cru. While the three top estates have underpinned their position impressively in the last 20 years, it must be said that the others have oftentimes not made the most of their location. After some more or less difficult years, 1995 was a great wine-year in Bordeaux and the high expectations of that time are continuously exceeded today. Also this wine is rich in tannins and matures brilliantly over many years. The 1996 vintage was initially underestimated, but later proved to be a top year for Bordeaux. It is a vintage that develops over decades and needs a lot of time to reach its peak.Château Lafon-Rochet Château Lafon-Rochet is a famous wine estate in the appellation of Saint-Estèphe in Bordeaux. In the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 it was ranked as Quatrième Grand Cru Classé. The estate then changed hands quite often, as a result of which production and quality suffered dramatically over the following century. The vineyard was eventually bought by Guy Tesseron, whose family had been trading in Cognac since the 16th Century, and restored to its former glory. It still remains in his family's possession and the estate is counselled by oenologist Jacques Boissenot, who also assists four of the five Premier Crus as well as a number of other well-known wineries in Bordeaux.Château Lafon-Rochet has a vineyard area of around 45 hectares and plants Cabernet Sauvignon (55 %), Merlot (40 %) and Cabernets Franc (5 %). The vines for the first wines are at least 35 years old. The wine is stored in oak-barrels, which are between 50 and 60 % new, for 16 to 20 months. Overall, the average anual production amounts to 20,000 cases, 12,000 of which are for the Grand Vin Château Lafon-Rochet and 8,000 for the second wine Les Pélerins de Lafon-Rochet. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Lot 363: Martin Luther King, Jr. ''The Future of Integration'' Speech Delivered in 1959 -- ''...segregation is at bottom a form of slavery covered up with certain niceties of complexity...''

by Nate D Sanders

July 31, 2014, 5:00 PM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: Original transcript of a speech delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr. on 11 November 1959 to Iowa State University. Titled, ''The Future of Integration'', speech discusses the civil rights climate at that time and concludes with MLK's unwavering beliefs in civil non-violence. Reads in part, ''Broadly speaking there have been at least three distinct periods in the history of race relations in this nation, each representing growth over a former period. It is interesting to note that in each period there finally came a decision from the Supreme Court to give legal and constitutional validity to the dominant thought patterns of that particular period. The first period in the area of race relations extended from 1619 to 1863. This was the period of slavery. During this period the Negro was considered a thing to be used rather than a person to be respected. He was de-personalized cog in a vast plantation machine. In 1857, there finally came a decision from the Supreme Court to give constitutional validity to the whole system of slavery. This decision, known as the Dred Scott decision, stated in substance that the Negro is not a citizen of this nation; he was merely property subject to the dictates of his owner. The second period in the development of race relations in America extended, broadly speaking, from 1863 to 1954. This was the period of restricted emancipation We must admit that this second period was something of an improvement over the first stage of race relations, because it at least freed the Negro from the bondage of physical slavery, and accepted him as a legal fact. But it was not the best stage because it failed to accept the negro as a person. It was, therefore, very easy for the ethos of segregation to emerge as the basic principle and practice of this period. In 1896, through the famous Plessy versus Ferguson decision, the Supreme court established the doctrine of separate but equal as the law of the land. Through this decision the dominant thought patterns of the second stage of race relations was given legal and constitutional validity. But because segregation is at bottom a form of slavery covered up with certain niceties of complexity, the end results of the period of restricted emancipation was that of plunging the Negro into the abyss of oppression where he experienced the bleakness of nagging injustice. The third period in the development of race relations in America had its beginning on May seventeenth, 1954. This is the period of constructive integration. It is the period in which men seek to rise the level of genuine intergroup and interpersonal living. The Supreme Court's decision, which came to give legal and constitutional validity to the dominant thought patterns of this period, stated that the old Plessy doctrine must go, that separate facilities were inherently unequal, and that to segregate a child on the basis of his race is to deny that child of equal protection of the law. As a result of this decision we find ourselves standing on the threshold of the third and most constructive period in the development of race relations in the history of our nation. To state it figuratively in Biblical terms, we have broken loose from the Egypt of slavery; We have moved through the wilderness of ''separate but equal,'' and now we stand on the border of the promised land of integration. As we stand at the threshold of this third period of race relations, we notice two contradictory forces at work in the South: the forces of defiance and the forces of compliance. The forces of defiance are at work in several ways. Many public officials are using the power of their offices to defy the law of the land. Through their irresponsible actions, their inflammatory statements, and their dissemination of distortions and half truths, they have succeeded in arousing abnormal fears and morbid antipathies within the minds of underprivileged and uneducated whites, leaving them in such a state of excitement and confusion that they are led to acts of meanness and violence that no normal person would commit. This defiance also expresses itself in the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan. Determined to preserve segregation at any cost, this organization employs methods are crude and primitive...There is always the implied threat of violence. Then there are the White Citizens' Councils. Since they operate on a higher political and economic level than the Klan, a halo of respectability hovers over them. But like the Klan, they are determined to preserve segregation and thereby defy the desegregation rulings of the Supreme Court. They base their defense on the legal maneuvers of ''interposition'' and ''nullification.'' Unfortunately for those who disagree with the Councils, their methods do not stop with legal tactics; their methods range from threats and intimidation to economic reprisals against Negro men and women. These methods also extend to white persons who will dare to take a stand for justice. They demand absolute conformity from whites and abject submission from Negroes...'' 12pp. speech measures 8.5'' x 11'' with staple to top left and minor toning throughout. Very good condition.

But you cannot imagine what a real pleasure it was to talk about it to someone I respect & who knows & likes you so well...We're crowded for time, as always. Things always seem to pop here instead of arriving gradually. 'Emergency' is a good name for war -- everything is invariably high pressure!...For some time I've had no letter from you. In fact [his brother] Milton brought the most recent one. So, although I got your Xmas radio I sent Charlie Gailey a radio this a.m. to say that you must write to me. I haunt the mail deliveries. The other day I received a batch -- all it was amounted to nothing. But when one comes from you, I have a field day!...'' Eisenhower signs ''Your Ike''. 8'' x 10.25'' 2pp. letter is in fine condition.

Lot 55: Chester A. Arthur

by RR Auction

August 13, 2014, 6:00 PM EST

Amherst, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $5,000 - $6,000

Description: Important partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10, September 22, 1881. In full: "I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to my Proclamation appointing a day of humiliation and mourning dated this day, and signed by me; and for so doing this shall be his warrant." In fine condition. This is an absolutely remarkable document in that it was signed by President Arthur on the day he took the Oath of Office in Washington, DC, and represents the final transition of executive power in what had been an unprecedented and controversial predicament in determining presidential succession. Garfield had been shot by unstable assassin Charles J. Guiteau on July 2, 1881, critically wounding but not killing the president. In the aftermath, President Garfield stayed alive for 80 days, suffering on his sickbed with fever, weakness, and infection before passing away on September 19, 1881. Although Garfield could not carry out his duties as president because of his ailing condition, the legalities of succession were unclear and Vice President Arthur was reluctant to assume the role, fearing it would be seen as an illegal power grab. The executive office thus remained essentially void of authority for over two months-with Congress in recess, Arthur refused to travel to Washington from his summer home until he heard that Garfield had passed. After the news of the president's death on September 19th, Arthur received the Oath of Office at his home in Manhattan from Judge John R. Brady of the New York Supreme Court, and Arthur boarded a train bound for Washington. He arrived at the White House on September 22-the same day he issued this document-where the Oath was re-administered before Chief Justice Morrison R. Waite to assure procedural compliance. The document here offered instructs Secretary of State James G. Blaine to confirm the proclamation of a day of remembrance, officially called Proclamation 250: Day of Mourning for James A. Garfield, in which Arthur said, 'it is fitting that the deep grief which fills all hearts should manifest itself with one accord toward the throne of infinite grace' and declared that 'Monday next, the 26th day of September-on which day the remains of our honored and beloved dead will be consigned to their last resting place on earth-to be observed throughout the United States as a day of humiliation and mourning.' A truly exceptional document within the broad context of American history, important in both date and content.

Harry S. Truman

Lot 83: Harry S. Truman

by RR Auction

August 13, 2014, 6:00 PM EST

Amherst, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,000

Description: TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, January 28, 1952. Letter to General E. E. Schwien. In full: "I read yours of the twenty-second with a lot of interest and I wish you could find it convenient to help Beetle Smith even if it is only for a little bit. We have a terrible time getting people in that Department we can trust and even if you can put in only a day a week with him it will be helpful." In fine condition, with scattered creases. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Following the success of the OSS during World War II, President Truman established the CIA in 1947. In this letter Truman refers to the director of the agency, Walter Bedell 'Beetle' Smith, who he had appointed to the position in 1950. He was the fourth director of the organization and largely considered the first successful one, as he redefined and consolidated the CIA's mission and oversaw its secretive expansive covert action program. During this period McCarthyism reigned supreme, and there were frequent accusations that communists had infiltrated American intelligence services-perhaps acknowledged by Truman's statement about untrustworthy workers in the department. A highly desirable letter having to do with the early origins and success of the Central Intelligence Agency.
