250 Pilots signed Men of the Battle of Britain hard backed book

Lot 49: 250 Pilots signed Men of the Battle of Britain hard backed book

by Chaucer Covers & Auctions

July 25, 2014, 5:00 PM GMT

Folkestone, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £4,000 - £6,000

Description: Men of the Battle of Britain hard backed book signed by 250 BOB pilots and aces. 80 are signed on the book pages and 170 on labels affixed throughout the book. Incredible collection of the brave pilots who save Britain from Invasion in 1941.Also inscribed by the author Ken Wynn. This is why the book is a unique one-off. The book was specifically published in 1990 to coincide with the historic 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. 'Operation Homecoming' brought many of 'The Few' living abroad back to Britain for the Anniversary and for various receptions - Maidstone - Bentley Priory - Biggin Hill - Buckingham Palace. It was a one-off LAST TIME 'The Few' would be gathered in such numbers. Collected by Playwright, Screenwriter & Film Producer Anthony Attard, who has detailed how this amazing item came to pass. In 1990, former WWII Typhoon pilot and aviation author John Golley, introduced me to the Redgrave Theatre, Farnham, Surrey, who wanted a new play written to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of The Battle of Britain. I invited John to collaborate with me. The play was called 'Freedom To Forget,' and a Gala Performance in aid of the RAF Benevolent Fund was held, by totally uncanny coincidence on the 31st October 1990. The 31st October 1940 is now officially remembered as the date the Battle of Britain ended. A number of 'The Few' who lived reasonably local to Farnham were able to attend the Gala Night performance. Over the course of 1990, being commissioned to write the play enabled me to meet so many of the 'Few' who had always been my heroes. Also, Wing Commander N.P.W. 'Pat' Hancock OBE DFC, then Secretary of the Battle of Britain Fighter Association, forwarded letters I wrote to members of the Association and is how I obtained so many on labels. For every signature I received I made a donation to the B.O.B. Fighter Association to help with the financial cost of 'Operation Homecoming,' which brought so many of 'The Few' living overseas to the U.K., for the 50th Anniversary celebrations. The Czech and Pole signatories to this book were obtained at a reception held at Maidstone on Saturday 22nd September 1990. All of the other actual signatories were obtained when I was a guest at the Biggin Hill Air Show that same year, or by personal visit to their homes where I was privileged to hear their enthralling memories of the Battle of Britain. Not all the signatories replied either with a letter or by putting down their Squadron number. Some just sent back the labels duly signed. After twenty-two years now recording all the signatures, most I have still been able to identify. There are four signatures, as yet, I am unable to identify. THOUGH THE ROAD MAY BE LONG BY BILL ANTON

Lot 2498S: THOUGH THE ROAD MAY BE LONG BY BILL ANTON

by Artistic Holdings Company

July 26, 2014, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $1,800 - $2,250

Description: Though The Road May Be Long By Bill Anton - Edition Size: 15 - Giclee On Canvas - Artist Proof Dimensions: 24 X 36 Release Date: 10-2004 ???.bill Anton Was Born In Chicago In 1957 And Later Moved To Prescott, Arizona. He Graduated From Northern Arizona University. Later, After Committing To Painting Full-time, He Studied Under Michael Lynch And Ned Jacob, Who Encouraged Him To Paint From Life. ?while The Nature Of My Work Necessitates Much Studio Time, More And More Of My Painting Is Done Outside.? Anton?s Work Has Been Published In Southwest Art, Architectural Digest, Art Of The West, Equine Images, Western Horseman And Art-talk. Corporate Collections That Include His Work Are Sears, Dupont, State Farm Insurance, Bank Of America, Hewlett Packard, And Trust Company Of The West. His Award Winning Work Has Been Displayed At The Prix De West At The National Cowboy And Western Heritage Museum, Masters Of The American West At The Autry Museum, The National Center For American Western Art, The Old West Museum, And The National Museum Of Wildlife Art. In Addition, His Work Is In The Permanent Collection Of The Prestigious Gilcrease Museum. ?i Do Not See Myself As A Biographer Of The Cowboy. I Know Some Artists Feel They Are Recording History On The Ranches As Life There Is Today, But The Focus Of My Work Has Always Been Mood And Passion. If I?m Recording Anything, I?m Recording How I Feel About The West. I Want The Viewer To Feel The Drama Of Atmosphere And The Mystery Of A Western Night. I Want The Volume And Portent Of A Cloud To Be Evident In The Calligraphy Of A Brushstroke. The Pack Of Muscle Below A Horse?s Shoulder Should Be Energized By A Gestural Application Of Paint. ?you See, I Love To Paint. And I Love The American West. I Was Born In Chicago, But The Sierra Nevada, Sangre De Cristo, Sawatch And A Hundred Other Ranges Of Our Rocky Mountains Were The Only ?big Shoulders? I Was Ever Interested In. Walking Thunderstorms, Sunstruck Cedars, Rimrock And Artfully Abstract Water Patterns Charge The Landscape With Impossible Beauty. ?amidst This Nobility Is Its Caretaker: The Rancher. With The Natural Ease Of Generations Bred To The Saddle, He Is A Powerful Image Further Ennobled By A Fine Horse. An Artist Under The Spell Of The West Has The Privilege Of Marshalling The Virtues Of Landscape, Figure Andequine Painting Into One Supremely Paintable Subject: The American Cowboy.? - Bill Anton

Description: Frank C. Mccarthy - On The Old North Trail - - Extra Large Edition - Image Size: 73"w X 22"h. Limited Edition Of: 22?.in The Long Shadows Of Breaking Daylight, A Blackfoot Indian Raiding Party Rides With Purpose And Bears The Markings Of War In What Is Our Largest-ever Frank Mccarthy Fine Art Edition. At Over 6 Feet In Length, This Remarkable Work Of Art From The Dean Of Western Action Will Electrify Any Room In Which It Hangs. The Blackfeet Were Enemies Of The Crow And Sioux On The Great Plains And Of The Shoshone In The Mountains To Their West And Of The Cree To Their North. Not Only Were They Fierce In Defense Of Their Canadian Border Homeland But Their Raiding Parties Ranged Out Along The Old North Trail From Alberta, Canada South To Mexico. Raiders Of Various Tribes Followed It, Stealing Horses And Food From White Settlers And Other Tribes. Blackfoot War Parties Would Ride Hundreds Of Miles On These Raids. They Were Hailed As Heroes By Their Own Tribe And Vilified By Their Victims. The Single Greatest Blow To Blackfoot Power In The West Came Not From Combat But From Disease. In The Mid-1800s, More Than 6,000 Blackfoot Natives Died Of Smallpox From A Single Instance Of Exposure To An Infected White Person. This Ended The Blackfoot Raider Dominance Of The Great Plains. On The "old North Trail" Is Not Only The Largest Frank C. Mccarthy We?ve Ever Produced, It Is One Of The Most Exclusive Editions We?ve Created Of His Work As Well. This (73? X 22?) Museumedition? Masterpiece Is Available In An Edition Of Only 25 Copies.
