MAX BECKMANN Holzbrücke.

Lot 464: MAX BECKMANN Holzbrücke.

by Swann Auction Galleries

March 5, 2015, 10:30 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $8,000 - $12,000

Description: MAX BECKMANN Holzbrücke. Drypoint on cream wove paper, 1922. 286x238 mm; 11 3/8x9 3/8 inches, full margins. Edition of 150. Signed in pencil, lower right. Published by Arndt Beyer, Leipzig. From Die Zweite Jahresgabe des Kreises Graphischer Künstler und Sammler. A superb, dark and richly-inked impression with strong contrasts. According to Hofmaier, the Holzbrücke was, "A temporary wooden bridge which replaced the Alte Mainbrücke [Old Main Bridge] while being repaired." It was near the center of Frankfurt and only several blocks from Beckmann's Schweizer Strasse studio. The artist likely drew the design directly on the plate with a drypoint needle; the large sign at the bridge entrance, upper left, appears to read "Rauken [sic] Verboten" (or "Smoking Prohibited") with the letters in reverse. The darkened figure on the bridge walkway, in the background, with the bowler hat is likely a self portrait. Hofmaier 242.

by Das Kunst- und Auktionshaus Kastern GmbH & Co KG

March 14, 2015, 11:00 AM CET

Hannover, Germany

Estimated Price: €1,600 - €2,000

Description: Zank und Gericke Hans Zank (1889 Berlin - 1967 Falkensee) Willi Gericke (1895 Havelstadt - 1970) - 'Gelbes Haus an brauner Brücke' - Öl/Lwd. Doubl. 53 x 49 cm. Verso Ausstellungsaufkleber sowie Nachlassstempel mit Werknummer. Rahmen.

Cubism, Menachem Helholz Or, Long arms, Oil painting

Lot 348: Cubism, Menachem Helholz Or, Long arms, Oil painting

by Eternity Gallery

March 8, 2015, 2:00 PM EST

Tampa, FL, USA

Estimated Price: $6,000 - $20,000

Description: Original oil painting by Menachem Helholz Or, 35 x 40 cm; Style - cubism, school of Picasso; Size of the stretcher: 13.5 in x 15.5 in = 35 x 40 cm; Size of the wooden frame: 17.5 x 20 inches = 46 cm x 51 cm; Biography: Menachem Helholz-Our was born in Germany in 1911. Although his training was never formal, he was influenced by the various German Artists of the Expressionist and Bauhaus Movements in his youth, most notably Franz Marc, Heinrich Campendonk, Paul Klee and Auguste Macke. His later works show the influence of several of these artists especially in his fusing together of Cubism and vivid Expressionist colour. In 1933, when Hitler came to power, Helholz-Our fled from Germany and settled in Palestine, where from 1937 he was able to devote himself to his painting. His subjects include figurative scenes, marine life and schematic cities, some of which are based on Jerusalem, Jaffa and also German cities and railway bridges, reminiscent of motifs used by Max Beckmann. Helholz-Our also experimented with the prismatic effects of light, and like many other German artists of the period, his work fluctuated between an Expressionist version of Orphism under the influence of the Delaunays and also Cubism. His townscapes and still-lives owe much to Paul Klee, particularly his creation of all-over formal poetic patterning. Auction results http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/17442/lot/58/ http://www.alonzakaim.com/artists/helholz-or_menachem/ Condition Natural aging of oil, no defects; Low Estimate: 6000; High Estimate: 20000; Original: Yes; Medium: Oil Paint; Circa: 1940; Style: Cubism;

Yesod Yitzchak - Zhovkva, 1810 - First Edition

Lot 86: Yesod Yitzchak - Zhovkva, 1810 - First Edition

by Kedem Public Auction House Ltd

March 11, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Yesod Yitzchak, kabbalistic and Chassidic interpretations of matters pertaining to Brit Milah. Halichot Olam, customs and segulot. Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi Mazarowitz [author of Raza Meheimana and Otiot D'Rabbi Yitzchak]. Zhovkva, 1810. First edition. Many approbations by leading Torah scholars: Rabbi Meir [Kristianpoller] of Brody; Rabbi Ya'akov Orenstein of Lvov, author of Yeshuot Ya'akov; Rabbi Efraim Margaliot of Brody; Rabbi Moshe Shapira of Zaliztsi; Rabbi Aryeh Leib HaCohen of Stryy, author of Ketzot HaChoshen; etc . Leaves 41-47 have sections for study the night before circumcision called "Vach-Nacht [compilations from the Zohar]. The author Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac HaLevi (1735-1783), kabbalist and hidden tsaddik, among the lamed-vav (36) tzaddikim of the Ba'al Shem Tov's generation and teacher of Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum, author of Yismach Moshe. Served as Shochet and Bodek and teacher in the village of Zhuravichi, hid his holy ways so much that many thought he lost his mind and was unlearned and uncouth. At nights, he would toil in prayer and kabbalah and write his books. The Ba'al Shem Tov would travel to discuss secret matters with him. When his greatness and holiness became famous, masses thronged to him compelling him to wander from his home. He died in the city of Przemyśl during his travels. The story is told that when Rabbi Yitzchak Levi was yet healthy and well he sent his wife to summon the Chevra Kadisha. He told them that the time had come for him to die and asked them to copy his many kabalistic writings before dressing him in his shrouds until they see his face change and burn like a torch. 100 Torah scholars copied his writings until they saw his face change and the box of writings close on its own, they then buried him and eulogized him fittingly. The copies were buried in his holy grave but his manuscripts reached the Maggid of Kremnitz Rabbi Ya'akov Yisrael HaLevi, who printed the books Raza MeHeimna (Lvov, 1791) Otiot D'Rabbi Yitzchak (Zhovkva, 1801) and Yesod Yitzchak. [5] 5-69 leaves. 21.5 cm. Thick and soft paper, good-fair condition, use stains, few worm damages to text. Tear with lack to corner of Leaf 64. Non-original binding. Stefansky Chassidut, no. 233.
