Signed Brady CDV photograph of Civil War Union General Henry J. Hunt, co-author of

by Lion Heart Autographs

September 30, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: HUNT, HENRY J. (1819-1889). American Civil War general revered for his skill as an artillery tactician. SP. (“Henry J. Hunt”). 1p. CDV. N.p., N.d. A fine Brady photograph of a uniformed Hunt, standing with his right hand tucked inside his tunic and the other holding his cap at his side. Signed on the lower photographer’s mount. ********** The grandson of a Revolutionary War soldier and son of an infantry officer and West Point graduate, Hunt was raised on the American frontier. After graduating from West Point, he served under Winfield Scott in the Mexican American War and fought in the Utah War against the Mormons. His skill in the area of artillery led to him co-authoring Instructions for Field Artillery, published in 1861 and much referred to by the Union Army. However, he also earned acclaim for his exploits on the battlefield at the First Battle of Bull Run, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and most notably, Gettysburg, where his artillery famously repulsed Pickett’s Charge. Hunt is a major character in Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen’s alternate history trilogy Never Call Retreat. ********** Our photograph was taken by the studio of Matthew Brady (1822-1896), one of America’s first successful photographers, whose Civil War portraits and battlefield scenes brought him fame. ********** Bearing the purple ink stamp of Brady’s Washington, D.C. studio on the verso. Corners are very lightly rubbed. In fine condition and scarce in this format.

(17.8 x 17.8 cm.)Sheet dimensions: 7 x 14 in. (17.8 x 35.6 cm.)Very good conditionEstimate $12,000-$15,000In 1983, Castelli Graphics (Leo Castelli represented Warhol, and had a prints division) held a retrospective of Andy Warhol's prints from 1963-1981. In honor of the occasion, Warhol created a special small Marilyn silkscreen, taken from his larger 1963 print, as the invitation. At the opening party, a small number of these invitations were signed by the artist. This particular impression is one of the very best, in immaculate condition and with bright colors. The pink Marilyn remains for Warhol collectors his most iconic and highly desired print. In 2012, another signed Marilyn invitation fetched $35,000 at Christie's New York. Under Warhol's instruction, Bob Colacello recruited a number of willing black and Hispanic transvestites from the night club The Gilded Grape in Greenwich Village. Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) Arguably one of the most influential American artists, Andy Warhol was a leading figure in the Pop art movement. He is particularly known for the breadth of his oeuvre, as it encompassed painting, hand drawing, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film and music. Fascinated with celebrity culture and status, his silkscreens of pop icons and mundane objects were particularly successful and cemented his place as a “celebrity” artist. His studio, The Factory, was a famous gathering place that brought together distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy patrons. As early as the 1970s galleries started exhibiting Warhol’s work, which is now part of some of the most renowned collections worldwide, including the Modern Museum of Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; and d’Art Moderne, Paris.
