Description: *Naval General Service 1793-1840, 2 clasps 1 June 1794, Trafalgar (Henry Park), well-worn overall and with an edge bruise, generally fine. Roll confirms. Able Seaman Henry Park served was born in Scarborough, circa 1771 and served aboard Vice-Admiral Graves’s flagship Royal Sovereign at the Glorious First of June, where she suffered 14 killed and 41 wounded. Park remained with the ship under Vice-Admiral Cornwallis and is believed to have served during ‘Cornwallis’s Retreat’ in June, 1795. At Trafalgar A.B. Park was aboard Bellerophon, to which he had transferred in 1801. The ‘Billy Ruffian’ was the fifth ship in Collingwood’s column and destined to play a significant rôle in the battle at the cost of 27 killed including her Captain, John Cooke, and 123 wounded. With other petty officers and crew from Bellerophon, Park transferred to the newly-repaired and recommissioned H.M.S. Bedford, under Captain James Walker, on 24 October 1807, becoming a second gunner. Bedford formed part of the Sir Sidney Smith’s flotilla escorting the Portuguese Royal Family to Brazil, 1807-08. Park married Elizabeth Cook in 1809 and later service to September 1814 may have included Impregnable and Queen. In later life he is listed as a Greenwich Out-Pensioner, no. 1656. He died on 7 February 1857 at Brixham, Devon. Provenance: By direct descent. Offered with some research and a copy of a ‘tin’ photograph of a child holding Park’s medal.

Captain J.E.Crossland R.N.R.,R.D., Royal Navy Reserve Medal for long and distinguished service, with

by London Coin Auction

June 7, 2015, 12:00 PM GMT

Longfield, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £6,000 - £8,000

Description: Captain J.E.Crossland R.N.R.,R.D., Royal Navy Reserve Medal for long and distinguished service, with miniature in silver gilt, British War Medal World War I, Mercantile marine war medal 1919, CQD medal named in the original box, a 14 carat gold watch and chain in the original presentation box in working condition presented to the recipient by the President of the United States. Crossland, from Hamilton, Ontario, schooled on board the HMS Conway, he left with a double extra certificate, a winner of seamanship and English History as well as other prizes. He was for years aboard the Kirkwood (Joseph Steele & Sons, Liverpool), it was dismasted and foundered in the North Atlantic after being stranded on the bar of the Columbia River in Portland, Oregon. Crossland took his first examination and from that was appointed second mate of the Earlscourt, another Liverpool vessel. After 12 months on the ship he was one of 6 survivors after she was wrecked on the Margin sands in the Bristol Channel. He then took another examination and was second mate on the Clyme and Proper, a British stamp steamer belonging to Cardiff, thus enabling him to take his Masters certificate. In 1887 he joined P&O where he was Fifth officer of the Carthage. He rose to second Officer on the Himalaya which were steam ships. He then joined White Star and obtained commission in the Royal Naval Reserve in 1892. He took part in the bombardment of Suda bay, Crete in 1897. He was awarded the Royal Naval Reserve decoration for long and distinguished service by King Edward VII in 1908. He had commanded the Tropic, Bovic, Corinthic, Cymric and Ceramic. The Great War broke out in 1914, when Crossland was commanding the Athentic, he was transferred to the Cymric carrying munitions and was one of only 5 vessels to get past German submarines. After this he was on another two ships, Corinthic and Ceramic. In March 1920 he was transferred to the Athenic and it was during this time in command effected a rescue at sea, The Athenic received a wireless call near San Salvador from the Munamar, a US steamer, which was hard ashore with 83 stranded passengers. The Athenic saved them all along with their baggage. This earned him a much prized recognition from the US Government, and this Waltham gold watch was presented to him by President Harding, also from the American people. During this period he received the CQD medal in silver gilt in a presentation box, one of possibly only 4 or 5 struck. The passengers of the Munamar wrote him a personal thank you letter which has been framed and is part of this collection. Captain Crossland retired and his last voyage arrived at Southampton on 28th September 1923.

June 3, 2015, 10:00 AM CET

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: €25,000 - €30,000

Description: Four naval scenes on the Yuejiang-River near Canton.a) Three junks during manoeuvres; b) Ningpo junks and passenger junks by the Whampoa pagoda; c) Ningpo junk; d) River pasenger junk in front of Fort Dahuangjiao. Oil on canvas (relined). Each framed. (4)The four works on offer here all depict the Yuejiang (Pearl River) and its importance for the trading capital Guangzhou (also known as Canton). The numerous junks seen transporting passengers and goods emphasize the river’s significance for China in the 19th century. The motif, technique, style and choice of mediums all indicate the possible authorship of Youqua, which would date the work to between 1840 and 1880.

West Columbia, SC, USA

Estimated Price: $600 - $800

Description: Documents: Early Charleston Rutledge family, capture of Fort Sumter correspondence of James Rose (1793-1869) to his nephew Dr. Hugh Rose Rutledge (1823-1915) and Dr. Rutledge to his wife Amelia Waring Ball Rutledge (1832-1892) relating the bombardment of Fort Sumter, dated March 15 and April 15, 1861 (2pcs) Provenance: Descended in the Rutledge family Other Notes: The Rutledge family of Charleston has a long and significant place in South Carolina state history. An archive of documents once belonging to some of the family's and South Carolina's earliest political, military, and landowning ancestors has descended through the family to a present heir. Included in this lot: Letter from James Rose (1793-1869), president of the South Western Railroad Bank in Charleston from 1840 until 1865, to his nephew Dr. Hugh Rose Rutledge, dated Charleston, 15 March 1861. Rose wrote "Matters are still in doubt about Ft. Sumter tho' I cannot but think it will be evacuated." He also mentioned a steam tugboat mounted with two "24 pounders" which the governor "has christened...the Lady Davis after the President's wife," and estimated there "are 4000 troops" defending Charleston harbor. Letter from Dr. Hugh R. Rutledge, headed "Mansion House [Charleston], Monday Evening [15 April 1861], and addressed to "My dear Wife." Rutledge recounted the fall of Fort Sumter which had occurred when the fort had been evacuated by Major Robert Anderson and his troops.
