Future Vice President George M. Dallas ALS re a navy appointment

by University Archives

May 19, 2016, 10:30 AM EST

Westport, CT, USA

Estimated Price: $0 - $200

Description: George M. Dallas recommends a fourteen year-old Philadelphian for a midshipman's appointment in the Navy GEORGE M. DALLAS (1792-1864) Autograph Letter Signed, "G. M. Dallas," 1 page, 7.75" x 9.25" Philadelphia, May 16, 1840, addressed in his hand on the verso to "James K. Paulding, Secretary of the Navy, Washington." Trimmed at left and bottom margins, partly laid in to a larger sheet, expected folds, moderate foxing and toning, else very good. Dallas writes, in full: "A young son of my old friend Alexander W. Reed, of the county of Philadelphia, is desirous of entering the naval service, and I am requested to recommend him to your consideration. He is about fourteen years of age, active, intelligent, and enterprising. His father and brother are among our most respected citizens, as are his friends generally. He will give much gratification to a numerous body of citizens if young Alexander W. Reed receives the appointment of midshipman. "From the library of John Augustin Daly (1838-1899). Daly, one of the most important figures in nineteenth-century American theater, worked as a critic, manager, playwright and stage director. At the time of his death, he owned two major theaters, one in New York and the other in London. Daly is considered personally responsible for the careers of such acting greats as John Drew Jr. Maurice Barrymore, Fanny Davenport, Maude Adams, Sara Jewett, Isadora Duncan, Tyrone Power, Sr. and many others.Daly was also an avid book lover and collector, amassing an enormous library of books and original manuscripts. That collection was dispersed in an epic, two-week auction at the American Art Association in New York in March 1900. The present letter was part of an extra-illustrated volume, described in the catalog as a "Unique copy, with autograph letters of all the Presidents inserted..." Walter Benjamin, writing in The Collector, described the sale as a "blaze of glory, due to the total having reached nearly $200,000." Benjamin attributed the sale's incredible success to "a small bookseller on 42d street, who appeared at the sale with apparently unlimited cash, and was soon the master of the situation." That "small bookseller," was George D. Smith (d. 1920), who, up until that time, had been an obscure and unsuccessful book dealer who began his career in 1883 with Dodd & Mead. Smith would dominate the market for the next two decades, working as an agent for some of the wealthiest collectors in the country—most notably Henry E. Huntington, for whom Smith purchased a portion of the Duke of Devonshire Library in 1914 for $1.5 million (American Art Association, Catalogue of the Valuable Literary and Art Property Gathered by the Late Augustin Daly, New York, 1900; The Collector, New York, May 1900, 1-2; Publisher's Weekly, March 13, 1920, 801; Ibid, March 21, 1914, 1008; "Geo. D. Smith Dies in HIs Book Store, New York Times, March 5, 1928, 13).The extra-illustrated volume of presidents from which this piece derives fetched $850, nearly four times above the going rate for presidential sets at the time. According to Walter Benjamin, Smith quickly resold the volume for $1,000. The collection did not surface again until it appeared in a minor auction in early 2016. (The Collector, New York, May 1900, 1-2).Provenance: John Augustin Daly; American Art Association, New York, March 19, 1900, Lot 3122; George D. Smith, New York.

Charles Henry Davis MEMOIR ON BOSTON HARBOR 1852 Antique American History United States Navy New England

by National Book Auctions

May 1, 2016, 12:00 PM EST

Ithaca, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $70 - $200

Description: Title: Memoir on Boston Harbor.Author: Charles Henry Davis - Charles Henry Davis was a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. Working for the Coast Survey, Davis researched tides and currents, and located an uncharted shoal that had caused wrecks off the New York coast. In the Civil War, he commanded the Western Gunboat Flotilla, winning an important engagement in the Battle of Memphis, before capturing enemy supplies on a successful expedition up the Yazoo river. (Information courtesy of Wikipedia)Publisher: Metcalf and CompanyCity: CambridgeYear: 1852Binding Style: SoftcoverPagination: 110 pagesWidth: 10.5" Height: 12"Book Details: Davis was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended the Boston Latin School and entered Harvard College in 1821 but left after two years when he was appointed as a Midshipman in the United States Navy on August 12, 1823.Between 1827 and 1828, he served on board the frigate United States, in the Pacific. In 1829, he was promoted to Passed Midshipman. From 1830 to 1833, he served on the sloop Ontario. In 1834, he was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the Vincennes. In 1840 to 1841, he served on board the ship Independence. In 1841 he received and honorary Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard and in 1868 he received an honorary L.L.D. from the same institution. In 1843 he became a member of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati in succession to his grandfather Colonel Constant Freeman (1757 - 1824).From 1846 to 1849, he worked in the United States Coast Survey on board the Nantucket, where he discovered a previously unknown shoal that had caused shipwrecks off the coast of New York. During his service to the Survey, he was also responsible for researching tides and currents and acted as an inspector on a number of naval shipyards. From 1849 to 1855 he was the first superintendent of American Nautical Almanac Office and produced the American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac. In 1854, he was promoted to Commander and given the command of the St. Mary's. On April 30, 1857, he mediated with the Central American forces at San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, the capitulation of filibuster William Walker and some 300 men, who departed in the St. Mary's for Panama the next day. In 1859, while commanding the St. Mary's, Davis was ordered to go to Baker Island to obtain samples of guano, becoming perhaps the first American to set foot there since it was annexed by the United States in 1857. The guano was necessary as fertilizer. Commodore William Mervine had previously been sent, but he did not land and believed the island to be inaccessible. (From evidence that was later found on the island, it had been visited prior to 1857 by whalers.)Condition / Notes: This antique pamphlet is disbound from the publisher's original wrappers.
