Anti-Semitic Medal - Germany, 18th Century

Lot 351: Anti-Semitic Medal - Germany, 18th Century

by Kedem Public Auction House Ltd

July 16, 2014, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Anti-Semitic medal of the "Feder Jude" series [Feather Jew]. [Germany, 18th century]. Feder Jude medals were created by Christian Wermuth around the year 1700. The medals featured an image of a Jew wearing a feathered hat and a text in German and Latin, implying that Jews use deceitful measures to attain public offices. The medal presented here is a different, unknown, version. The text is almost identical to the Feder Jude medals text (the word "horns" is replaced by the word "feathers") while the illustration is different. To the best of our knowledge, this medal is not documented in numismatic literature.Obverse: Figure riding a deer with a German inscription around it: "ich trage die hörner dass jeder mann schaut ein ander trägt solche der es nicht glaubt". An additional inscription in Latin: "Cornua Qui Fecit, Ne Cornua Ferre Recuset". (Do not ridicule a cuckold for it is very true that many came to public office through their horns). Reverse: Text in German and Latin.Diameter: 40 mm.See: Jewish Medals From the Renaissance to the Fall of Napoleon (1503-1815), Daniel M. Friedenberg, pp.9-12.
