by Auctionata

October 22, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €320 - €400

Description: Pewter, rattan covered handle England, c. 1900 Design: Archibald Knox (1864-1933) - English-Scottish designer Designed for Liberty & Co. (est. 1875) - London-based department store for luxury goods Underside stamped 'ENGLISH PEWTER' and '0280' Plain tankard with stylized petal decoration Height: 20 cm Good condition The designer Archibald Knox was well known for his Art Nouveau style; his designs for the renowned department store Liberty & Co are amongst his most popular items of the 'New Celtic Design' This jug was designed by Archibald Knox for the department store Liberty & Co. The simple cylindrical body stands on a short slightly flared foot and decorated in the lower part with a stylized petal decoration. The handle with thumb rest is covered with rattan. A characteristic piece by Knox whose designs are epitomes of British Art Nouveau! The pitcher is stamped on the base with 'ENGLISH PEWTER' and model number '0280'. It is in good condition with signs of age and wear. The rattan shows some losses, there are small nicks to the foot. The height measures 20 cm. Archibald Knox (1864-1933) Archibald Knox was born on the Isle of Man in 1864 and became well-known for his Art Nouveau designs. Already at an early age he developed an interest in Celtic art, which would later influence many of his designs. He acquired renown especially with his individualistic designs of metalwork and jewelry for the British department store Liberty, for which he created numerous household objects between 1899 and 1904.Liberty & Co. Liberty is an exclusive, traditional department store in Regent Street in London and was established by Arthur Lasenby Liberty. The store first opened in 1875 and has offered goods and art products from all over the world since then. Liberty imported carpets, textiles and antiques from the Far East as well as art objects from Asia. (tfa) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
