KPM Coffee & Mocha Service Neuosier Flower Decor, 1957-93

by Auctionata AG

February 25, 2016, 11:00 AM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €448 - €560

Description: Porcelain, coloured onglaze painting with gold rimBerlin/Germany, 1957-93Royal Porcelain Manufactory, BerlinComplete coffee and mocha service of 64 pieces for 8 peopleUnderglaze blue sceptre mark, onglaze red orb and numbering underneathForm: NeuosierDécor: Flower paintingHeight coffee pot: 25 cmVery good conditionEstimate by Auctionata Expert: 1540 EURThis porcelain service originates from the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin. It is designed in the form ‘Neuosier’ and the décor ‘flower painting’. The gold rim of the service highlights the extremely elaborate elegant form and the delightful character of the service. The service consist of one coffee pot with lid, eleven mocha cups incl. twelve saucers, eight cake plates, one sugar jar with lid, and one milk can. Eight coffee cups incl. eight saucers, and twelve cake plates are of a slightly different form. The beautifully finely differentiated wave relief of the flag is amended by the naturalistic hand painting of the flowers and little butterflies. The gold rim is an excellent addition. Handles and knobs are gold staffaged. Simply a beautiful porcelain service for a coffee party or serving desert. The condition of the service is very good. Every piece bears the underglaze red sceptre mark and the onglaze red orb by KPM as well as numbers underneath. The height of the coffee can is 25 cm.KPM – Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur BerlinThe manufactory that was founded in 1763 by Frederick the Great was based on three private companies that had tried for some time to produce porcelain in Berlin. The manufactory has been located near the Tiergarten in Berlin since 1871. It took up the production of painted porcelain tiles under the direction of Professor Alexander Kips and made a huge profit. After the destruction of the manufactory during the Second World War the Land of Berlin took over the company in 1988. Since 2006 the company is owned by the private banker Jörg Woltmann. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Salvador Dali Giant Flying Mocha Cup Facsimile Signed & Numbered Giclee

by Big Art Auctions

February 9, 2016, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $200 - $300

Description: Limited Edition Giclee Titled "Giant Flying Mocha Cup” (After) Salvador Dali. This Piece Is Facsimile Signed On The Lower Right. Pencil Numbered From An Edition Of 375. Paper Measures 15? X 10?. Image Measures 12.5? X 7.5?. Made On Thick Quality Archival Paper. In Excellent Condition, Comes Unframed. Comes With A Certificate. (After) Salvador Dali Was A Surrealist, And The Surrealists Were Heavily Influenced By Sigmund Freud. And, In Particular, By Freud’s Important Book, Interpretation Of Dreams. We Know, In Freud’s Lexicon Of Dream Imagery And Symbolism, That Receptacles Were Symbolic Of Female Genitalia, And That Long Rods Or Appendages Were Phallic. Could The 42-year-old Dali Have Had A Little Sex On His Mind At The Time He Painted This Work? The Nearby Pomegranate, Which Appeared In Several Other Dali Works Around This Period, Is A Classic Symbol Of Resurrection And Chastity. Now, Below The Floating Cup Is A Stone Cube, With Inlaid Marble And, In The Center Of The Circle, The Head Of Medussa. But Consider That, If You Extended The Circular Pattern Up Onto The Tall Shaft Coming Off The Cup Handle, You’d Be Approximating The Curve Of A Logarithmic Spiral – A Mathematic Principle With Which Dali Was Obsessed, And Which He Employed In Creating The Beautiful Spatial Harmony In His Works – Present Picture Included. A Figure In The Right Distance Appears To Be Arab, Reminding Us Of Dali’s Roots, While The Background Mountain Is Reminiscent Of The Same Eerie Landscape Seen In A Painting With Which Dali Was Long Obsessed: The Isle Of The Dead By Arnold Bocklin. For All The Individual Elements Of Giant Flying Mocha Cup That Can Be Examined And Deciphered, The Larger Arc Of The Painting Connects With An Absolute Truism That Can Be Said Of Much Of Dali’s Diverse Body Of Surrealist Work: It Was Quintessentially Enigmatic! But Let’s Not Forget, Too, That Dali Simply Enjoyed Doing Unusual Things, Often With A Dash Of Humor Sprinkled In For Good Measure. There’s No Question That The Image Of This Spectacularly Strange Coffee Cup Was Calculated To Make Us Smile, If Not Utter An Audible Laugh.
