Gar Wood Etats Unis Runabout 1927

Lot 107: Gar Wood Etats Unis Runabout 1927

by Osenat

July 26, 2014, 5:00 PM CET

LA TESTE DE BUCH, France

Estimated Price: €17,000 - €23,000

Benjamin Disraeli LORD GEORGE BENTINCK A POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY 1852 Antique English History Conservative Party Decorative Leather

by National Book Auctions

Ithaca, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $70 - $200

Description: Title: Lord George Bentinck: A Political BiographyAuthor: Benjamin Disraeli - Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, KG, PC, FRS, was a British Prime Minister, parliamentarian, Conservative statesman and literary figure. He served in government for three decades, twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Although his father had him baptised to Anglicanism at age 12, he was nonetheless Britain's first and thus far only Prime Minister who was born into a Jewish family-originally from Portugal. He played an instrumental role in the creation of the modern Conservative Party after the Corn Laws schism of 1846.Although he was a major figure in the protectionist wing of the Conservative Party after 1844, Disraeli's relations with the other leading figures in the party, particularly Lord Derby, the overall leader, were often strained. Not until the 1860s would Derby and Disraeli be on easy terms, and the latter's succession of the former assured. From 1852 onwards, Disraeli's career would also be marked by his often intense rivalry with William Ewart Gladstone, who eventually rose to become leader of the Liberal Party. In this feud, Disraeli was aided by his warm friendship with Queen Victoria, who came to detest Gladstone during the latter's first premiership in the 1870s. In 1876 Disraeli was raised to the peerage as the Earl of Beaconsfield, capping nearly four decades in the House of Commons. Before and during his political career, Disraeli was well known as a literary and social figure, although his novels are not generally regarded as a part of the Victorian literary canon. He mainly wrote romances, of which Sybil and Vivian Grey are perhaps the best-known today. He is exceptional among British Prime Ministers for having gained equal social and political renown. He was twice successful as the Glasgow University Conservative Association's candidate for Rector of the University, holding the post for two full terms between 1871 and 1877.Publisher: Colburn and Co., PublishersCity: LondonYear: 1852Printing Information: Second EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: viiii/588 pagesWidth: 6" Height: 8.75"Book Details: A political biography of Lord (William) George Frederick Cavendish-Scott-Bentinck (27 February 1802 - 21 September 1848), better known as Lord George Bentinck, an English Conservative politician and racehorse owner, noted for his role (with Benjamin Disraeli) in unseating Sir Robert Peel over the Corn Laws.Condition / Notes: Antique volume is bound in half leather with pebbled brown cloth. Spine has raised bands, stamped gilt lettering and ruling. Book shows moderate external wear, with mild rubbing to covers and faint stain to upper half of back cover. Binding is firm. Estimated Price: $70 - $200

Description: Title: Masters of Deceit: The Story of Communism in America and How To Fight ItAuthor: J. Edgar Hoover - John Edgar Hoover was the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States. Appointed director of the Bureau of Investigation-predecessor to the FBI-in 1924, he was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935, where he remained director until his death in 1972 at age 77. Hoover is credited with building the FBI into a larger crime-fighting agency, and with instituting a number of modernizations to police technology, such as a centralized fingerprint file and forensic laboratories.Late in life and after his death Hoover became a controversial figure, as evidence of his secretive actions became known. His critics have accused him of exceeding the jurisdiction of the FBI. He used the FBI to harass political dissenters and activists, to amass secret files on political leaders, and to collect evidence using illegal methods. Hoover consequently amassed a great deal of power and was in a position to intimidate and threaten sitting Presidents. According to biographer Kenneth Ackerman, the notion that Hoover's secret files kept presidents from firing him is a myth.According to President Harry S. Truman, Hoover transformed the FBI into his private secret police force; Truman stated that "we want no Gestapo or secret police. The FBI is tending in that direction. They are dabbling in sex-life scandals and plain blackmail. J. Edgar Hoover would give his right eye to take over, and all congressmen and senators are afraid of him".(Information courtesy of Wikipedia)Publisher: Henry Holt and CompanyCity: New YorkYear: 1958Printing Information: Signed EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: x/374 pagesWidth: 6" Height: 8.75"Book Details: Condition / Notes: This is a scarce author-signed second printing of this work by FBI director Hoover.
