The founder of the watchmaking dynasty, Jean-André Lepaute, had established the business in the mid-1740s, in 1747 his younger brother Jean Baptiste Lepaute got on board. Both brothers were appointed royal clockmakers and signed their clocks ‘Lepaute Horologer du Roi’. In 1774 Jean-André’s two nephews, Pierre-Basile and Pierre Henry Lepaute entered the company as partners and on the 14th of May 1789 eventually took over the business. However, in 1795, Pierre Henry left his cousin and form this time onwards, produced clocks with the signature ‘Henry à Paris’ and ‘Henry Lepaute à Paris’. Pierre-Basils’ nephew Jean-Joseph founded the workshop ‘Lepaute neveu à Paris’ in 1811, which he later handed on to his son-in-law and cousin Augustin-Michel Henry. At the same time, Pierre-Basil established the business ‘Lepaute & Fils‘ together with his son Pierre-Michel, whereby they continued to use the signature ‘Lepaute à Paris’ as well as the title ‘Horologer de l'Empereur’ and ‘Horologer du Roi’. His works of the same size are quite sought after by private collectors and achieve high prices in the international auction marketThe present painting is the work of the Dutch painter Constantijn Netscher and dates from the 17th century. It depicts a lady with a whippet before a landscape. The sitter is shown in three-quarter length and features the typical fashion and hairstyle of the time. The lights in the eyes and the well-shaped lips enhance the portrait with give great vividness. The artwork is listed in the archive of the Netherlands Institute for Art History Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie as portrait by Constantijn Netscher (see RKDimages, Constantijn Netscher, illustration no. 0000019329).The painting is indistinctly inscribed on the whippet’s colar, ‘*DLV’.
