Edgar Allan Poe THE RAVEN 1884 Gustave Dore Engravings & Vignette By Elihu Vedder Stedman Comment Classic American Literature Box

by National Book Auctions

May 31, 2015, 12:00 PM GMT

Ithaca, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $750 - $1,000

Description: Title: The RavenAuthor: Edgar Allan Poe - Edgar Allan Poe was an American author, poet, editor and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. He was born as Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts; he was orphaned young when his mother died shortly after his father abandoned the family. Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia, but they never formally adopted him. He attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. After enlisting in the Army and later failing as an officer's cadet at West Point, Poe parted ways with the Allans. His publishing career began humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, "Tamerlane and Other Poems" (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian".Poe switched his focus to prose and spent the next several years working for literary journals and periodicals, becoming known for his own style of literary criticism. His work forced him to move among several cities, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. In Baltimore in 1835, he married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year-old cousin. In January 1845 Poe published his poem, "The Raven," to instant success. His wife died of tuberculosis two years after its publication. He began planning to produce his own journal, "The Penn" (later renamed "The Stylus"), though he died before it could be produced. On October 7, 1849, at age 40, Poe died in Baltimore; the cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other agents.Poe and his works influenced literature in the United States and around the world, as well as in specialized fields, such as cosmology and cryptography. Poe and his work appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. A number of his homes are dedicated museums today.Publisher: Harper & Brothers, PublishersCity: New YorkYear: 1884Binding Style: HardcoverPagination: 24 leaves of platesWidth: 15" Height: 19"Book Details: "The Raven" is a narrative poem by American writer Edgar Allan Poe. First published in January 1845, the poem is often noted for its musicality, stylized language, and supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover, tracing the man's slow fall into madness. The lover, often identified as being a student, is lamenting the loss of his love, Lenore. Sitting on a bust of Pallas, the raven seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore". The poem makes use of a number of folk and classical references.Poe claimed to have written the poem very logically and methodically, intending to create a poem that would appeal to both critical and popular tastes, as he explained in his 1846 follow-up essay, "The Philosophy of Composition". The poem was inspired in part by a talking raven in the novel Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty by Charles Dickens. Poe borrows the complex rhythm and meter of Elizabeth Barrett's poem "Lady Geraldine's Courtship", and makes use of internal rhyme as well as alliteration throughout."The Raven" was first attributed to Poe in print in the New York Evening Mirror on January 29, 1845. Its publication made Poe widely popular in his lifetime, although it did not bring him much financial success. The poem was soon reprinted, parodied, and illustrated. Critical opinion is divided as to the poem's literary status, but it nevertheless remains one of the most famous poems ever written. (Information courtesy of Wikipedia) This antique elephant folio is bound in gray cloth over beveled boards, with black lettering to its spine and front cover. A large pictorial design representing a kneeling angel with a gilt halo and wings appears on front cover and a much smaller circular design showing Pallas Athena can be seen at center of the rear cover. Light foxing can be seen on the blank page at the front and rear of the volume. The book, with gilt edges and chocolate brown endpapers, is otherwise in excellent condition, preserved in its scarce original cardboard box. The box shows heavy wear at the edges, with loss to one side panel. This work is handsomely illustrated with 26 wood-engraved plates after drawings by Gustave Dore and a title page illustration by American symbolist painter, book illustrator, and poet Elihu Vedder. This edition has a comment by American poet and critic Edmund C. Stedman. For lots which include only books, our shipping charge applies to any address within the fifty United States. For lots which are not books, the stated shipping cost in this listing will apply only to addresses within the continental 48 states.
