Letter reads, in part:"I send you as requested the paper containing what purports to be an outline of my speech... Any man can see that it is incomplete and improper, and does not even profess to be my speech. The whole charge is malicious false and mean...". Well written in deep brown upon lightly toned blue lined period wove paper. The Letter is signed "John C Breckinridge" as Vice President, measuring 2.75" long.John C. Breckinridge was a major Candidate against Abraham Lincoln in the party-realignment Presidential Election of 1860.He would soon be the nominee of two Democratic splinter groups. Breckinridge was the youngest Vice President, just over 36 years old when he was inaugurated in 1857. At the time of this letter, which finds him complaining about his political opponents, Breckinridge was prominent among contenders for the Presidential nomination. The convention met at Charleston, from April 23rd to May 3rd, 1860, but failed to make a nomination due to the deadlock over the approach to the Slavery issue. This would lead to Breckinridge receiving the nomination of the Southern wing of the party and becoming the principal States-Rights candidate.

Antique Chinese Rank Badge

Lot 1: Antique Chinese Rank Badge

by Nazmiyal Auctions

November 6, 2014, 7:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $4,000

Description: Size: 10 in x 11 in, (0.25 m x 0.28 m) - Regarded as status symbols, civil rank badges were a form of public prestige awarded to accomplished scholars. This civil fifth-rank badge depicts a silver pheasant, which is a symbol of beauty and good fortune. The silver pheasant with its five plumy tail feathers is perched on a sea rock. Auspicious symbols rendered in a combination of indigo blue and creamy white encircle the detailed bird. An array of ornate lotus blossoms, bian fu bats and spiraling ruyi-shaped clouds surround the imperial sun. Ruyi-shaped motifs also decorate the surface of the sea, separating the decorative background from the tonal deepwater lishui stripes. Fretwork borders depicting pinyin wan motifs create a fitting enclosure that complements the style of this antique Chinese rank badge.

Robert Rainey is seeking 244 pounds from George Hite of Virginia and signs this sworn statement at the bottom just above Colonel Clement Biddle. A fine signature of Colonel Clement Biddle.Clement Biddle (1740-1814) was a Revolutionary War army officer, born in Philadelphia. During the war, Gen. Mole People Production Mole Head

Lot 13: Mole People Production Mole Head

by Premiere Props

October 25, 2014, 11:00 AM PST

El Segundo, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $2,200

Description: One of the all time grand Sci-Fi "classics" of the 1950's was "The Mole People" (1956), which actually has us believe that the premise of the film is based on fact. So much so that they had "Our Mr. Sun" professor Dr. Frank Baxter actually give a ten minute lecture at the beginning of the film talking about the hallow earth theories which would explain how a completely different civilization of humanoids could live deep in our planet! Thus starts the story of archaeologists (including a very recognizable Hugh Beaumount just one year before he became America's favorite father in "Leave It To Beaver"), who, while on a expedient, end up deep underground facing a race of Sumerian albinos who keep mutant "mole men" as slaves to harvest their man food source, mushrooms. Of course the slaves revolt, and by the end, as is always the case, as our heroes escape, the entire underground world collapses. Of course the highlight of the "grand opera" of a film were the Mole People themselves. They are forever stamped in our collective nightmare conscience since a great deal of the tiny $200,000 budget went to legendary creature make-up artist Jack Kevan to create the masks and Mole People heads. Kevan's career went all the way back to "The Wizard of Oz", and continued through other classics such as 'Creature From The Black Lagoon", "The Incredible Shrinking Man", and "Man Of A Thousand Faces". He created the design for the extremely iconic bug-eyed tri-lipped Mole faces, as well as crafting both the masks that allowed the sideways lips to open and close, and the heads used on dummies for the important sequences were Mole People are both sucked into the ground, and popped back up to attack. This is one of the Mole heads used for these sequences. Cast from the original mold in hard latex it is filled with industrial foam rubber to keep its shape during the stunt sequences. It comes from the personal vast collection of Jerry Neeley, well-known film historian, collector and owner of the famous "Jerry's Video" in Los Feliz, CA. Customers, collectors and throngs of industry people would come from miles to talk to Jerry, whose knowledge and memory were encyclopedic. This infamous Sci-Fi treasure comes with a Letter of Provenience from Jerry Neely's widow and co-owner of his various video and memorabilia shops. (Mole People Stunt Head is approx &'x12"x10". )

A one page letter measuring 9.75" x 7.75" to Brigadier General Henry Burbeck, New London, Connecticut ordering that certain recruits are to be dismissed with the President's thanks. This following the August 1814 burning of the City of Washington's public buildings by British forces, reguarded as being one of the most humiliating events in U.S. history, John Armstrong resigned amidst blame for failing to defend the capital against the invasion. The paper is bright and crisp with some toning on the reverse. The penmanship is very good and easily read.Body of Letter transcribed in full:"Dear Genl. -- Call in Col. Benjamins recruits & with them garrison your Forts. The militia can be ill spared at this busy season, you will therefore dismiss them with the Presidents thanks for the promptitude with which they turned out and expressions of his confidence in their zeal & courage, should farther trials be necessary. Mr. Tracy will furnish you with materials ... for putting the forts in good order.I am Sir very respectfully Your Obedient Servant,John Armstrong"Docketed, "Orders from the W. department 1 July." Ex: the Papers of General Henry Burbeck.John Armstrong (October 13, 1717 - March 9, 1795) was an American civil engineer and soldier who served as a major general during the Revolutionary War. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress for Pennsylvania. Armstrong County, Pennsylvania is named in his honor. In 1756 he led the Kittanning Expedition. In 1758, Colonel Armstrong led 2,700 Pennsylvania provincial troops on the Forbes expedition, the approach of which compelled the French to vacate and blow up Fort Duquesne. Armstrong became a good friend to the other militia commander in this expedition, Colonel George Washington. In the early stages of the American Revolutionary War, Armstrong was a brigadier general in the Pennsylvania militia. On March 1, 1776, the Continental Congress appointed him to that same rank in the Continental Army. He was sent south to begin preparations for the defense of Charleston, South Carolina. He contributed his engineering talents to the construction of defenses that enabled them to withstand the Battle of Sullivan's Island later that year. When General Charles Lee arrived to take command, he returned to his duties with the main army and with the Pennsylvania militia. Pennsylvania named him major general in charge of the state militia. This ended his service in the Continental Army, but not the war or his cooperation with General George Washington. At the Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777, Armstrong's militia held the far left of the American line. They were also to guard the army's supplies. After a hard day's fighting the Americans were forced to withdraw or face being surrounded. Armstrong brought the supplies and his militia out from Pyle's Ford after dark.In the Battle of Germantown on October 4, General Armstrong led the American right. His mission was to skirt the British left flank and attack there and in their rear. Despite delays and the troubles some units had in moving, the overall attack was going well, until the center was held up at the Benjamin Chew House. The attack then collapsed after a friendly fire incident in the fog in which General Adam Stephen's men fired on Anthony Wayne's troops causing their withdrawal. Armstrong, whose men had advanced nearly to the center of Germantown, but were not greatly involved in the fight later complained that it was "....a glorious victory fought for and eight tenths won, ....mysteriously lost, for to this moment no one man can ....give any good reason for the flight."After Germantown, Armstrong was granted permission to give up active command. At aged sixty, his health was declining, and old wounds were troubling him. Returning home to Carlisle, he was elected to the Continental Congress by the Pennsylvania Assembly. As a delegate from 1777 to 1780 he was a strong supporter of Washington Throughout his life Armstrong served in a number of local or civic offices. One of these, the Carlisle school board, led him to originally oppose Dr. Benjamin Rush's proposal to start a college in the town. He later relented, and became a member of the first Board of Trustees for Dickinson College. John died at home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on March 9, 1795, and is buried in the Old Carlisle Cemetery. In 1800, when Pennsylvania created a new county at Kittanning, it was named Armstrong County in his honor.(From Wikipedia)
