1980 BOYD VASELINE MATCHING HAPPY, SAD CLOWN FIGURES XW

by ACCURATE ESTATE AUCTIONS & APPRAISALS

August 2, 2015, 2:00 PM EST

Sheffield, AL, USA

Estimated Price: $55 - $65

Description: The AEAA is very pleased to present this next pair of valuable Vaseline glass items from the respected Loren (Butch) Morse collection. This lot represents two stunning & matching 1980s Boyd Art Glass clowns in the happy & sad styles. Both explode under black light, plus are in wonderful condition, weighing 1# 2 oz., and measuring 2.25 x 1.25 x 4.25 inches tall. xxxxxxxxxxxxx. Boyd’s Crystal Art Glass, Inc. opened in October 1978 by the father and son team of Bernard C. and Bernard F. Boyd. They represent the second and third generation of Boyd glass-makers. Bernard C. Boyd’s father, Zack Boyd began working for Cambridge Glass in 1901 at the age of 13. He honed his skills and style working for 26 different factories, and taking a proactive roll in the Degenhart Glass Co. When owner John Degenhart passed in 1964, Elizabeth continued manufacturing glass with the help of Zack Boyd, introducing her own molds and colors before her passing in 1978. As Boyd had retired from Cambridge Glass, and was 76 years old, he enlisted the help of his son Bernard C. in the company affairs. Bernard C. was also a Cambridge product, and a practicing psychiatric aid at the state hospital. Upon Zack’s passing in 1968, Gus Therat was engaged to run the day to day operations. Bernard C. Boyd continued to help Elizabeth Degenhart in administration until 1976, when he began his own full time glass business. Elizabeth joined John in 1978, and after a short shut down, the Degenhart facility was purchased outright by Bernard C. and his son Bernard F. Boyd, supported by his own wife & son. His knowledge has since passed to his son, his sons son and his sons - sons son. In their current modest shop you find a man and mold handcrafting collectible glass pieces. In another room, there’s a lady hand painting pieces and in the third room, there’s plenty of glass art to browse or buy. Boyd’s Crystal Art Glass is made Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. The showroom is open until 4 p.m. Boyd’s is located at 1203 Morton Avenue in Cambridge, Ohio. RARE FENTON 11 IN CHRISTMAS VASE RUBY STAR OF DAVID XW

by ACCURATE ESTATE AUCTIONS & APPRAISALS

August 2, 2015, 2:00 PM EST

Sheffield, AL, USA

Estimated Price: $275 - $295

Description: Offered for your consideration this Rare 11 inch FENTON GIANT Hand Painted, With CORALENE STAR OF DAVID CHRISTMAS Ruby VASE , SGNED by Fenton Artist KS BUSKIRK, *** Weight: 2# 6 oz. *** Measurements: 5.25 x 5.25 x 11 ***** CORALENE GLASS ***** Coralene glass was a Victorian form of decoration on glass. A picture or design was painted onto the glass with "syrupy" enamel paint, and tiny glass balls were applied to this surface, then re-heated so they partially melted into the surface. The result looked a little like the rough surface of coral. Coralene was first patented in 1883 by Schierholz in Germany, but very soon afterwards was being exported in large volumes from Bohemia and also made in the USA by the Mt Washington Glass Company in New Bedford. It was sometimes called "Coral beaded" or "Coralene beaded" and various other names. The Mt Washington coralene designs, as well as those from Bohemia, often imitated strands of coral patterned over the glass, like the small vase shown below left. The popularity of Coralene extended into the 1920's, and the vase top left has a 1923 date stamp on the silver rim, from a British silversmith. The vase itself was probably imported from Bohemia. In the early 1920's the Handel Company of Connecticut, USA, produced a version which they named "Fabrikon". Recently (latter part of the 20th century) fake "coralene" pictures have been produced, sometimes on genuine original glass.

2002 GIBSON VASELINE OPALESCENT FLAT SHOULDER CRUET XW

by ACCURATE ESTATE AUCTIONS & APPRAISALS

August 2, 2015, 2:00 PM EST

Sheffield, AL, USA

Estimated Price: $95 - $110

Description: The AEAA is very pleased to present this next piece of valuable Vaseline Opalescent glass from the respected Loren (Butch) Morse collection. This lot represents a rare 2002 Gibson Glass hand blown, Vaseline Opalescent octagonal lobed & square shoulder cruet plus the fine Gibson applied reeded handle, and their lovely tri-folded rim. This beautiful properly marked cruet features fiery Opalescence and is in excellent condition. It explodes under black light, and weighs 12 oz., measuring 4 x 4 x 7 inches tall. This Gibson treasure represented one of the last hand blown glass companies in the U.S. xxxxxxxxxxxx. Charles Gibson started working with glass in the 1950s with different glass companies including Blenko, Indiana Glass and others. Gibson glass was opened in 1976 and closed one year later when Charles decided to Pastor full time. In 1985 Charles Gibson along with his son Phillip reopened Gibson glass, a small cottage industry glass shop in Milton, WV. He had previously worked at Blenko Glass, Bischoff Glass, and with Joe St. Clair Glass prior to starting his own shop. His specialties were paperweights, carnival glass and a line of fancy marbles. He also made some very nice Vaseline glass with heavy opalescence. They made limited edition cruets, ladys spittoons and perfume bottles (usually dated). Gibson also made the first convention piece for VGCI and it was the first 'marked' piece the club had made. It was a bulbous vase made into a spittoon shape. The factory closed in 2005, due to the failing health of Mr. Gibson, but the creative output had been such that the Osburn Modern Glass Co. was started in 2006 when Dave Osburn purchased the Gibson Glass Factory. Dave had also previously worked for Blenko Glass Company, and had 33 years of experience as a glass blower and designer. Osburn Modern Glass expanded their lines to include more than 100 items to choose from, including vases, baskets, bowls, pitchers, creamers, jugs, tumblers, mugs, glasses, decanters, ornaments, animals, paperweights and figurines. Pertinent data is listed below. RARE 1920 HOUZE VASELINE AGATE GLASS BALUSTER LAMP XV

by ACCURATE ESTATE AUCTIONS & APPRAISALS

August 2, 2015, 2:00 PM EST

Sheffield, AL, USA

Estimated Price: $165 - $185

Description: The AEAA is very pleased to present this next item of valuable Vaseline / Opalescent Vaseline glass from the respected Loren (Butch) Morse collection. This lot represents a rare & gorgeous 1920s Houze yellow Vaseline / Custard slag glass, staged & footed baluster boudoir lamp, finished in the special Houze & Akro Agate style eccentric Caramel banded agate pattern. This great & RARE lamp features a round 4 banded & footed conical base plinth, topped by a stunning traditional baluster style stem. Our rare example is in excellent working condition, and sports a Leviton socket, and weighs 2# 8 oz. measuring 5.5 x 5.5 x 13 inches tall. Our valuable lamp is definitely from the depression Era, as the U.S. government seized the Houze Uranium Oxide in 1942. Due to the drafting of the Hazardous Materials Act, which banned any and all use of rare earth and radioactive materials, reserving them specifically for the U.S. Government / Defense Department, production was never resumed in Houze yellow & green Uranium colors (see history below. In early 1959, the act was rescinded, and U.S. Vaseline / Uranium Oxide production was resumed initially by Fenton Art Glass (Topaz). xxxxxxxxxxxxx. Loren Morse was a respected family man and Vaseline collector, and his untimely passing a year ago was a blow to everyone. The Morse family gratefully appreciates your participation in this Estate sale. xxxxxxxxxxxxx. The 102 year history of Houze Glass production began when Leon Houze came to the United States in 1879 at age 22 and worked for Day William Window Glass Co. in Kent, Ohio. In 1881, Leon Houze and his brothers Luke, Ulguisse, John and Vital started a glass factory in Meadville, Pa., called Houze Brothers Glass that made window glass. The factory burned, was rebuilt and then burned again. At the insistence of their wives, the brothers went their separate ways, with Ulguisse Houze eventually ending up in the state of California, where he brought an orange grove, although his son Noel J. Houze eventually went to work for his uncle Leon Houze in Point Marion, Pa. at the confluence of the Monongahela and Cheat Rivers, just above Morgantown, West Va.Before starting his business in Point Marion, however, Leon Houze built glass furnaces in Olean, N.Y., where John Houze said his ancestor built the first glass furnace powered by natural gas. Leon Houze also produced numerous inventions for the glass industry, including putting glass on cast-iron forms and running them through a heating oven to soften them into convex glass used for pictures, clock faces and instrument dials. All this was accomplished in 1899, when Leon Houze came to Point Marion and built the Jeanette Window Glass Company, following that with the building of the Federated Glass Co. in 1902. History records that Leon Houze built two more glass plants in Point Marion, including Houze Portrait Glass in 1902 that was eventually renamed Houze Window Glass, and the L.J. Houze Convex Glass Co. in 1914. Eventually, he bought out both Jeanette Window and Federated Glass lock, stock, & barrel, and incorporated all of the plants into L.J. Houze Convex Glass Co. in 1923.Leon Houze had three sons: Armand Sr., Roger and Leon Jr., who all worked at the factory. Armand was the glass chemist who started working for his father when he formed the convex glass company and became vice president of the company. He was in charge of coloring the glass and chemicals. Roger Houze took care of sales and was plant manager, overseeing the production of a wide range of Houze products. John Houze showed off a Saturn lamp the company made for the 1939 World’s Fair in Chicago. The company also made children’s toy glass dishes, lamps, lamp shades and figure lamps. There apparently was no end to the colors they Houze could produce, reputedly being the steward of well over 700 glass formulas, which were used in making ashtrays, cigarette containers, lamp parts, novelties, whimseys, desk pen bases, and contract gift items for private manufacturers. The approach of WW II had a profound effect on Houze, as exportation of colored glass for goggles and sunglasses was stopped, and in 1942, the war department came to the factory and took all the uranium that was used in making glass, ending the company’s production of yellow & green Opaline (Vaseline) objects. We are extremely grateful to the Houze Glass Museum (http://www.houzeglassmuseum.com/) and family members, for sharing their fine historical data.
