c. 1865 Reverse Painting on Glass of ABRAHAM LINCOLN Folk Art Style Design

Lot 199: c. 1865 Reverse Painting on Glass of ABRAHAM LINCOLN Folk Art Style Design

by Early American

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM PST

Rancho Santa Fe, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $2,000

Description: Abraham Lincoln RelatedExtremely Rare Hand-Made Reverse Painting on Glass of Abraham Lincoln in a Gilt Wooden Frame Memorial c. 1865 Lincoln Assassination Memorial Period, Original Handmade Reverse Painting of Abraham Lincoln on Glass, "Folk Art" Style Design, Cracked Glass, Fine.Extremely Rare, large and impressive Reverse Painting on Glass Abraham Lincoln Assassination Memorial, measuring 24.5" x 18.25" housed within a gilt wooden frame measuring to 28.25" x 21.75". This unusual "Folk Art" Style piece features a transfer image of Abraham Lincoln within the center of a Hand-painted wreath. The background is black and there appears to be some newspaper behind Lincoln's image and some crinkled, foil material for decoration behind the wreath. There are several large heavy sectional breaks in the glass, along with some light chipping and crystallizing of the paint, thus being sold "As Is" as such, with no return. This exceedingly rare "Folk Art" style memorial was probably made very shortly after Lincoln's assassination on April 14, 1865. Even given the stabilized glass repairs, it is certainly an impressive display piece. A similar item of this same basic design and size, was offered by a San Francisco-based antiques dealer in a major trade publication many years ago for $6,000. It was noted to be one of only a few known to exist of its type and quite valuable and desirable to collectors. This current example Ex: Railsplitter Auction of May 1999.
