Description: Rare Special Order Winchester Model 1895 Lever-Action Short Rifle with Deluxe FeaturesThis is an excellent example of a very rare Winchester Model 1895 deluxe short rifle with three special order features that was manufactured in 1920. The barrel is fitted with a Lyman heavy front sight with an ivory tipped bead, a two-leaf folding rear sight and a early Lyman model 95 side mounted rear sight. The sight is adjustable for elevation only with the rear peep sight adjustable for windage by drifting/tapping the rear aperture side ways. Description: Documented Rare Winchester Special Order Deluxe Factory Engraved Gold and Nickel Plated Model 1886 Rifle with Factory LetterWinchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1894. The rifle is complete with a letter from the Cody Firearms Museum that lists the features as: "Caliber: 45/90", "Barrel Type: Octagon", "Trigger: Set, NM Set", "Checkered stock with pistol grip", "Engraved: $5.00" and "1/2 Gold, Balance Nickel". The letter states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on May 15, 1894. The full octagon barrel, full length magazine, bolt, loading gate and lever are nickel plated. The forearm cap, receiver and crescent buttplate are gold plated. The forearm cap, receiver and buttplate heel are decorated with factory No. 10 engraving which features "ornamental scrolls and embossed border work". The left side of the receiver is engraved with a detailed game scene that depicts a whitetail buck and doe with a double line border. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured fancy grain walnut with a high polish piano finish and Style H checkered panels. The bottom of the pistol grip has a horn or ebony inlay. The barrel has standard sporting style front and rear sights. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a rear sight. The receiver has factory double set triggers. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the two-line legend "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-90 W.C.F." is roll stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "-MODEL 1886-" is roll stamped on the upper receiver tang. The two-line 1884/1885 patent markings are stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number "88125" is stamped in script numerals between the tang screws surrounded by engraved flourishes. Model 1886 rifles with plated finishes of any type are scarce. Rifles with combination gold and nickel plated finishes are extremely rare.Manufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1886BBL: 26 inch octagonStock: walnut checkeredGauge: 45-90 WCFFinish: nickel/gold platedGrips: Serial Number: 88125

Condition Report: Extremely fine, totally original. The rifle is all original and retains nearly 95% of the original nickel plated finish. Most of the nickel plated finish is present on the barrel; the plating on the lower portion of the magazine shows handling wear. Nearly all of the nickel plating is present on the loading gate and lever; the bolt retains about 25% of the plated finish. The receiver, forearm cap, and buttplate retain about 30% of the delicate gold plating in protected areas. The balance of the forearm cap and receiver have an attractive silver-gray patina. The buttplate shows more wear and has a dark patina with gold plating present along the edges. The delicately engraved scroll and border work and highly detailed game scene are crisp. The barrel legend, caliber and model designation are sharp. The highly figured stock and forearm are excellent and retain close to 95% of the original highly finished piano finish. The checkering is very sharp and shows minimal handling wear. Stock and forearm wear is limited to a few very minor handling marks. The rifle appears to be in excellent mechanical condition. This is an outstanding example of a special order Winchester Fancy Sporting Rifle with the extremely rare combination of nickel and gold plated finish, factory engraving, deluxe forearm and pistol grip stock and double set triggers.

Lot 11: Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Take-Down Rifle in Desirable 45-70 Caliber

by Rock Island Auction Company

May 2, 2014, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $7,500 - $12,000

Description: Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Take-Down Rifle in Desirable 45-70 CaliberThis is an exceptional example of a deluxe, special order Winchester Model 1886 take-down rifle as manufactured in late 1900's. This rifle has several very rare special order features such as: (1) take down barrel/receiver (2) half-length magazine (3) pistol grip stock (4) shotgun style buttstock with shotgun style buttplate (5) checkered stock and forend (6) rubber butt plate. The unusual aspects of this rifle is that with all these special order features the walnut stock and forend are both plain, non-figured walnut and the checkered panels on the stock and forend are both very small. The rifle has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, loading gate and trigger. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock has a black, hard rubber, pistol grip cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" in relief and a black, hard rubber, checkered, shotgun buttplate with the circular Winchester logo in the center. The round barrel has a Lyman "sheard bead" front sight with ivory bead and a Winchester, adjustable sporting rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped in two lines "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" with the left rear side marked "NICKEL STEEL" only with no other markings, with "45-70" stamped in front of the receiver. Again this is an unusual caliber since it was manufactured at just about the time the 33 WCF was coming out and it has the nickel steel barrel which was really intended for smokeless powder cartridges. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number "122747" is stamped on the lower tang behind the tang screws.Manufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1886BBL: 22 inch roundStock: walnutGauge: 45-70Finish: blueGrips: Serial Number: 122747

Condition Report: Very fine with 80% plus of the original blue finish with light blue loss on the underside of the receiver and take down mechanism with the cocking lever also having faded to a silvery patina with subdued case colors on the upper part of the lever. The stock and forend are both in very fine condition with 90% of the original factory varnish with some areas of light flaking and minor handling marks. The checkering is also in very fine condition with nice original checkering showing light wear across the tops of the checkering. Overall a very nice, special order Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle.

Description: Rare Deluxe Factory Engraved Winchester Second Model 1876 Lever Action Sporting Rifle with Factory LetterThis is a fine original example of a documented factory engraved Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action rifle that was manufactured in 1881. The rifle has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover guide rail and later style dust cover with serrated finger guide. The 28 inch full octagon barrel, full length magazine, dust cover and loading gate are blued and the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grain, walnut with checkered panels and a piano finish. The forearm cap, dust cover, cartridge elevator, receiver and buttplate heel are factory engraved with fine scrollwork on a punch dot background. The left side plate is engraved with a game scene featuring two detailed deer and the right side plate has an open banner. The engraving is nearly identical to the Ulrich engraved Model 1873 carbine illustrated on page 186 of "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson. The rifle is equipped with a special order single-set trigger. The barrel has a sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 1000 yards and marked "1876" at the top of the leaf. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a receiver sight. The pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trap door. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "CAL. 45-60" is located on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. "45-60" is stamped in script numerals on the cartridge elevator. "MODEL. 1876." is roll-stamped on the upper tang. The serial number "16771" is stamped in small numerals across the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw. Included with the rifle is a factory letter, which verifies the caliber, octagonal barrel, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, casehardened receiver and the Five Dollar level engraving. Additionally, the letter reports that the rifle arrived at the warehouse on October 1, 1887 and left on December 1, 1886, which we ascribe to a transcription error.Manufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1876BBL: 28 inch octagonStock: fancy walnut checkeredGauge: 45-60 WCFFinish: blue/casehardenedGrips: pistol gripSerial Number: 16771

Condition Report: Fine. The rifle is all original with about 70% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish. The balance of the blue finish on the barrel and magazine has aged to an attractive plum-colored patina. The metal surfaces are smooth, the barrel edges are sharp and the markings are crisp. Substantial amounts of nitre blue finish remain on the loading gate and dust cover. The case color pattern is visible on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate have mostly faded to a mottled, silver-gray, patina. There are several small spots of light pitting on the bottom and sides of receiver and a small spot of surface corrosion on the right side plate. The flawlessly executed, Ulrich-engraved scrollwork and game scene are crisp. The highly figured, deluxe walnut stock and forearm are both in fine overall condition with moderate wear. The checkering on the stock and forearm shows moderate handling wear and there is some finish loss on both sides of the stock. This is a fine example of a rare, deluxe, Ulrich Factory Engraved Special Order Winchester Model 1876 Deluxe Lever Action rifle.
