June 27, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,000

Description: President Harry S. Truman Writes to the National Jewish Welfare Board. Typed letter signed as President, 1 page, on White House letterhead, 10 1/2 x 8 in., Washington, April 30, 1947. To Frank L. Weil, National Jewish Welfare Board, sending greetings on the occasion of their annual meeting. "I am moved to voice my admiration for the constructive approach taken by the JWB to carry out an intensive year-long survey of its function in, and service to, the community. I am informed that the findings of that investigation, which was directed by prominent American scholars, and the recommendations of the investigators and the national commission of Jewish leaders with whom they worked are to be made fully and freely public.... the future of your organization will be largely determined by the appraisal of the results of that unprecedented study and the proposals it contains. May I express here my feeling that the organization whose magnificent devotion to the men and women in uniform won it the gratitude of the United States Government has richly earned its mandate from the Jewish community of this country to extend its splendid and wholesome career of service to youth on the broadest possible base." He quotes a laudatory message sent ten years earlier by FDR and adds, "The National Jewish Welfare Board...has given overwhelming testimony of its vital and vivid role in the life of our national community...." ADOLF CHWALA (1836 - 1900) LANDSCAPE WITH A LAKE

by Arthouse Hejtmánek

May 28, 2015, 4:00 PM CET

16000 Prague 6, Czech Republic

Description: ADOLF CHWALA (1836 - 1900) LANDSCAPE WITH A LAKE 1870s - 1880s, Austria (Vienna) A large painting (with frame 129.5x187.5cm). Landscape with a Lake is a beautiful work, undoubtedly authored by Adolf Chwala, a painter who was long-forgotten and only recently received his well-deserved recognition at an exhibition in the Prague National Gallery (2011)." Chwala moved from the Munich academy of Maxmilian Haushofer, to the Prague Academy studio, and was a proponent of the Romantic landscape painting of the second half of the 19th century. He left for Vienna in 1864, where he made his reputation, especially for his dramatic landscape painting. Due to high demand, he was even commissioned to make authorial copies of some of his works. An extract from an expert assessment by PhDr. Naděžda Blažíčková-Horová. The assessment is included. Oil on canvas, signed in the bottom left corner: A. Chwala.

Keller, Helen

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

June 28, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: Keller, Helen. (1880-1968) American author, political activist, and lecturer; the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree. Typed letter signed, 2 pages, on printed personal stationery, 10 1/2 x 7 1/4 in., Arcan Ridge, Westport, Conn., Jan. 15, 1943. Some creasing and soiling. To Ruth Posen, thanking her for a "touching Christmas Remembrance" and apologizing for her delay in responding because of urgent duties. In part: "...I am waiting for a hurry-up call to do legislative work for the blind of Tennessee. However, another day shall not go by without my telling you how moved I was that you should let me read your brother's marvellous letter, a kaleidescope of life stranger than fiction. I have had it transcribed into Braille to keep among my most inspiring mementos of this supreme Day of the Lord. It is a sacred experience for me to share even indirectly your long anxiety and struggle to save your brother and joy in his final release. As I read his narrative, flames of anger leaped up in me against the inhumanity from which he had suffered. Yet how well I understood his big feeling that he would not have missed that ordeal, hideous as it was, since he had witnessed heroic manhood and unbreakable faith 'down there' in those realms of Styx. His courage to sing and to resist brought back to me Wordsworth's lines addressed to Toussaint l'Ouverture, 'Thou hast great allies, agonies, exultations, and love and man's unconquerable mind.' Then I became highstrung at the end when he declared that he would again jump down into that hellish misery 'and take a gun anew.' May God's Blessing gird him with might to break new trails to freedom for the oppressed as did the Hebrews of old, is my fervent wish....Your belief in my message will encourage in mments when I may be at a loss how to comfort others that survive these years of shipwreck and disillusionment....Reciprocating your love, and hoping that life may be gentler to you and your dear ones durig 1943, I am, Sincerely your friend, Helen Keller."Ruth Posen was a Jewish woman who had family in Europe. She had read Hellen Keller's book, The Story of My Life (published in 1904) and was deeply inspired by her. The two women began to correspond. As the rise of Nazism spread through Europe, Ruth Posen worked to save her brother and bring him to the United States. After successfully making it to the United States, her brother wrote an account of his ordeal and the atrocities he witnessed. Ruth Posen sent a copy of it to Helen Keller. As Helen Keller writes, she was very moved and had the letter transcribed into Braille. This is a very rare letter in which Helen Keller expresses her outrage at what the Nazis are doing. THIS IS IN 1943! The Helen Keller Papers are at Harvard University's Radcliffe Institute For Advanced Studies. In her papers are the letters that Ruth Posen wrote to her. Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000

[With handwritten dedication Queen Adelaide] Three sermons addressed to young children, by a Lady. P

by Zwiggelaar Auctions

June 9, 2015, 7:00 PM CET

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Estimated Price: €250 - €500

Description: [With handwritten dedication Queen Adelaide] Three sermons addressed to young children, by a Lady. Printed for the bazaar patronised by her Majesty the Queen Dowager in aid of the Adelaide Institution at Southampton. London, W. Wright, 1838, -2, III, -1, 27, (1) p., bound in rich gilt black morocco, gilt edges, 12mo (minimal signs of use). An extremely rare single edition, no other copies found. The book is dedicated by the anonymous author to Queen Adelaide (1792-1849, wife to Willem IV and namesake of the Australian city). The extraordinary quality of our copy is that it is the actual copy belonging to Queen Adelaide, with her gilt royal monogram A.R. underneath a crown on the front cover. Particularly noteworthy is the handwritten dedication added by the Queen to the free endpaper: For Anna and Aurelia from their (...) Aunt, [monogram:] A.D. 1839. Comparing the handwriting, monogram and date in our book with those on a card in the Queen Adelaide collection (see: https://www.flickr.com/photos/migrationmuseum/7158547859/in/set-72157625351164638) provides an unmistakable match. Furthermore, our copy has a small pasted ex libris G.H. This could be the ex libris of Georges Hugnet (1906-1974), an important French artist and collector of manuscripts and autographs.

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: "Hachsharat Mifratz Haifa" (Haifa Bay Development) company - collection of photos and copies of sketches of the Haifa Bay area [ca.1926].• Thirty b/w photos of the Haifa Bay area, from the period of acquisition of lands in the area by "Hachsharat Mifratz Haifa". Photos of sites and views: The Kishon River and Mount Carmel, the village Jidru, workers planting, and more. Photos are mounted on album leaves. The name of the company "Hachsharat Mifratz Haifa Ltd" is printed on the upper part of the leaves, and on the lower part of some of the leaves appears a printed caption: "propaganda material 1926".Some of the photos are accompanied by a short handwritten text, in Hebrew and in English, depicting the photographed area and the operations of "Hachsharat Mifratz Haifa" Company: “a marshy pond at the mouth of the Kishon. In the Background the Carmel. In front the ‘Nesher’ cenent-factory which produces a cement equal to the best European cement. The pond is being filled up by the Haifa Bay Dev. Co. Ltd”; “Another view of Jedroo. The walled building in the background belongs to the effendi, the former owner of the land acquired by the Haifa Bay Dev. Co. Ltd”; “View of the Bedouin Village ‘Dar-El-Beda’...the inhabitants of the village have been compensated and have left the place”; and more • Two copies of sketches of the area, mounted on album leaves: "map of the swamps and stream on the land of 'Hachsharat Mifratz Haifa' lands" (appears twice, once titled by hand and once without the title) and "'Hachsharat Mifratz Haifa Ltd.', first period of the building plans".In 1926, when the procedure of lands acquisition by "Hachsharat Mifratz Haifa" was completed, architect Richard Kauffmann started to plan the area so to enable "Hachsharat Hayishuv" company to market and sell the lands. This album was arranged, most probably, during that period by "Hachsharat Mifratz Haifa" company, for marketing purposes. The photos are not signed but were taken (all or part of them) by Raphael Ernst Salus (1897-1982). Salus, born in Bohemia, moved to Eretz Israel in 1921. Upon arrival he started to tour the country and document his tours. In 1922 he was one of the founders of Kibbutz Heftziba.Enclosed are two copies of sketches of “Hachsharat Mifratz Haifa” company.Total of 32 album leaves: 30X23 cm. Photos: ca.11X16 cm.
