Titled and dated in ink below the image l.l., signed and inscribed "Edward Clark - Life" in ink below the image l.r., signed by the subject Graham Jackson and dated "1982" in ink below the image l.c., signed and numbered "8 of 10" in ink on the backing. Condition: Taped to overmat with masking tape, gently light-struck, solarization or similar in dark areas of image. N.B. As a staff photographer for LIFE, Ed Clark drove all night from his home in Nashville to Warm Springs, Georgia, after learning of the death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. As the President's body was transported to the train station for the journey back to Washington, Clark captured United States Navy bandsman Graham W. Jackson, Sr., playing "Goin' Home," one of Roosevelt's favorite tunes, on his accordion. The now iconic photograph of Jackson with tears streaming down his cheeks, a poignant and moving symbol of the nation's grief, was published in the April 17, 1945, issue of LIFE.

Condition Report: An inscription in ink on the backing reads: "This is # 8 of 10 prints that are signed by Graham Jackson and me. I printed the print myself at Glen Echo Natl Park in Glen Echo Md." The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Condition requests can be obtained via email (lot inquiry button) or by telephone to the appropriate gallery location (Boston/617.350.5400 or Marlborough/508.970.3000). Franklin Roosevelt letter 2 months after being afflicted with polio:

by Lion Heart Autographs

September 30, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,800 - $2,200

Description: Two Months after Being Struck by Polio at Campobello Island: “The doctors tell me I am getting along splendidly and I hope to be back in the game before so very long” ********** ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D. Thirty-second president of the United States. (1882-1945). TLS. (“Franklin D. Roosevelt”). 1p. 4to. New York, October 5, 1921. On his Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland letterhead. To Orange County lawyer, and politician HENRY WARING CHADEAYNE (1858/9-1945), Cornwall town supervisor and, later, attorney for the New York State tax commission. Though written on business letterhead, it is likely that the letter was written either at Presbyterian Hospital or elsewhere and brought to him for signing. He was released from the hospital only on October 28th. ********** “I appreciate very much the action of the Democratic County Committee of Orange County in directing you to convey their sympathy to me. I also appreciate exceedingly the personal good wishes which you added on your own account. The doctors tell me I am getting along splendidly and I hope to be back in the game before so very long. Very sincerely yours…” ********** In January 1921, following seven years’ service as Woodrow Wilson’s Assistance Secretary of the Navy and an unsuccessful bid for the vice presidency in 1920, Roosevelt was offered a position at the Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland by Baltimore businessman and aviation pioneer Van Lear Black. From 1921 until 1928, he split his day between his lower Manhattan office and his law practice, while using his political connections to increase the insurance company’s business. ********** At the end of July 1921, Roosevelt boarded Black’s yacht, Sabalo, and the pair sailed to Campobello Island where Black was a guest for two days at the Roosevelt summer home. The day after Black departed, on August 10, 1921, Roosevelt was afflicted by a sudden fever, pain and weakness in his legs following a rigorous day of hiking, boating, swimming, and putting out a fire on a neighboring island. He was initially misdiagnosed until a family doctor, called in for a second opinion, gave the diagnosis of poliomyelitis. The foremost specialist on the disease, Dr. Robert Lovett, was consulted. “Lovett found FDR paralyzed from the waist down and running a moderate fever in the range of 100 degrees; there was some involvement of his facial muscles, and his muscles were so weak he could not be brought to a sitting position without assistance,” (Franklin Roosevelt: His Life and Times, Graham & Wander). ********** It was not until September that Roosevelt was able to be moved to New York’s Presbyterian Hospital where he was treated by Harvard classmate Dr. George Draper. In October, he finally returned to his home in New York. “Despite the treatment by Lovett and Draper, he had lost all muscular function below the level of the waist, and by the end of October he was just able to sit up with assistance. Arrangements were made for [a] nurse therapist… to visit him regularly for muscle training in his home. These exercises were painful, exhausting and stressful for both the patient and his family,” (ibid.). ********** Despite these hardships, Roosevelt refused to succumb to the disease and its physical limitations displaying his characteristic optimism in our letter written during the very onset of his illness. “He learned to adapt to his disability, and he made frequent visits to his New York office. He kept up his political correspondence, almost from the beginning of his illness,” further evidenced by our letter, (ibid.). ********** Roosevelt dedicated himself to overcoming polio (known then as “infantile paralysis”) and helping others afflicted with the disease. After treatment at a spa at Warm Springs, Georgia in 1924, Roosevelt purchased the facility in 1926, which still exists today as the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation. In 1938, with his law partner, Basil O’Connor, he founded the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, also known as the “March of Dimes,” which funded research into the prevention and cure of polio. ********** Not only did Roosevelt get “back in the game” seven years later when he was elected governor of New York in 1928, he never left it, serving as president of the United States from 1933 until his death 12 years later. ********** Letters by FDR mentioning polio are rare and desirable. The present example is the earliest reference to his condition that we have ever seen on the market. In excellent condition and with the original envelope.

VON RICHTOFEN, MANFRED - THE RED BARON - A very rare copy of the German first edition of Þr Rote Kampfflieger

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

September 4, 2015, 2:00 PM BST

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £3,000 - £4,000

Description: A very rare copy of the German first edition of Þr Rote Kampfflieger' by Manfred von Richthofen, famously known as 'The Red Baron', signed by the author "Manfred von Richthofen Rittmeister" and dated 1917 in pencil on the frontispiece, modern cover and binding, some browning to paper, hardback, 8vo , Berlin, Verlag Ullstein & Co, 1917. Credited with 80 aerial victories, von Richthofen achieved a great fame by flying a Fokker Dr.I triplane painted bright red. "Der Rote Kampfflieger" was written as an autobiography by the WW1 flying ace while recovering from serious wounds received in combat on July 6th, 1917. The content was heavily subject to wartime censorship, since German authorities wanted to protect Richthofen's hero status for propaganda purposes. After the publication, the pilot actually acknowledged that the tone of the book was too arrogant but he died in 1918 before a revised edition could be published. Signed copies of the German first edition of Þr Rote Kampfflieger' are extremely rare.

Very early photograph of Franklin Roosevelt signed later, in 1931, and inscribed to a NYC attorney

by Lion Heart Autographs

September 30, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $600

Description: ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D. (1882-1945). Thirty-second president of the United States. SP. (“Franklin D. Roosevelt”). 1p. Folio. [Washington, D.C.], 1931. An imposing Harris & Ewing photograph of a young Roosevelt taken between 1909 and 1919 and inscribed later on the photographer’s mat to Manhattan Attorney REUBEN B. SHEMITZ (1894?-1970). ********** Roosevelt triumphantly returned to public life with his New York gubernatorial victory in 1928 after spending 1921 to 1924 trying to recover from polio. When the stock market crash in October 1929, the American economy began to unravel and the country sank into the Great Depression. Unemployment skyrocketed, 11,000 banks closed their doors and, in the absence of demand, crops were left to rot in the fields. The situation worsened in 1931 with the beginning of a crippling drought that caused dust storms to strip away the precious topsoil of farms across America. ********** In an unprecedented move Roosevelt went to the July 1932 Democratic convention to accept his nomination rather than wait for the formal ceremony several weeks later. It was at the convention that FDR promised a “new deal for the American people” and in November he was elected to the first of an unprecedented four terms. The initial hundred days of his presidency were marked by drastic reforms that brought immediate relief to the American people. These policies were followed by additional relief initiatives that comprised Roosevelt’s New Deal that helped restore much of the economy while dramatically changing the nature of the federal government. ********** Shemitz was the brother-in-law of Whittaker Chambers, the former Communist Party member and Soviet spy who testified in lawyer Alger Hiss’ trial for perjury and espionage. Shemitz later revealed that Chambers notified him of his intention to go into hiding in 1938 after breaking with the Soviets. ********** Very slight age toning at the outer edges of the mat. Otherwise fine and impressive!
