Johann F. Eberlein, Female Pagoda Nodder, Meissen, c. 1900

Lot 62: Johann F. Eberlein, Female Pagoda Nodder, Meissen, c. 1900

by Auctionata AG

February 17, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €320 - €400

Description: Porcelain with white glaze, polychrome painting and highlighted with gold Germany, around 1900 Meissen porcelain factory - established in 1710 Marked with Meissen manufactory mark and model number underneath Based on a design by Johann Friedrich Eberlein (1696-1749), dating from 1740 Moving head and moving hands Height: 28 cm In 1762, 10 pagodas were included in the so-called 'Prussian Order' by Frederick II for the furnishing of the castle Sanssouci. This reflects the great esteem which was placed on such figures at the time This Meissen porcelain figure was based on a design by the German sculptor Johann Friedrich Eberlein and depicts a seated Chinese lady with a laughing facial expression, whose head and hands are moving, which is the special feature of this figure is. A slight kick to the head and the pagoda 'nods' through the exact balanced metal hanger inside the body. The dress is embellished with flowers on a yellow ground and the light blue hems are highlighted with gold. From the 1740s, Chinese figures were a popular subject at the European courts. The pagodas belonged to the series 'Foreign Nations' and showed outlandish figures in colorful and exotic dresses. The best-known modelers of Meissen, Johann Joachim Kaendler, Elias Meyer, Peter Reinicke and Johann Friedrich Eberlein, delivered designs for this series. The pagoda shows signs of age and wear. Gold wear and restorations can be seen. The wobble mechanism works. The figure is marked with the Meissen swords as well as the model number inside. The total height is 28 cm. Meissen Porcelain has been known in Europe since the 13th Century, but always had to be imported from China. Thus it was mostly of lower quality - the Chinese rarely gave their best ware to the foreigners - and extremely expensive. Europeans tried to copy Chinese porcelain for centuries but only in 1708 managed to create real porcelain - in Meissen. The manufacturer's brand, the crossed swords in blue, has been in use since 1722 and is still a guarantee for the porcelain's high quality. Meissen celebrated its 300 years of existence in 2008. Quality has always been the number one criteria for Meissen and the company goes as far as to have its own mine to win the needed kaolin from, also known as china clay, for production. It takes several years to reach the degree of a "master painter" in Meissen but judging by the quality of the painting, it is definitely worth it. Estimated Price: €90 - €100

Description: A RARE SOUVENIR ALBUM OF CEYLONNOT IN ICCU. NO COPY OF THIS EDITION IN OCLCColombo Apothecaries Company. Souvenir Album Containing 24 Views of Ceylon Scenery. Photographic view album of the island of Ceylon. From photographs by the Colombo Apothecaries Co., Ltd. Colombo & Kandy: Colombo Apothecaries Company Ltd., w.d. [about 1900].Silk ribbon bound paperback souvenir brochure with b&w photographic illustrations,140x224 mm, 52 pages. The book consists of 24 single-sided photographic plates, with no text other than the captions for the photographs, illustrating, among all: Colombo Harbour, Colombo Museum, Hindoo temple, Galle Face Hotel, Mount Lavinia, Pettah, The Lake, Galle road, Lake road, clock tower and lighthouse, Kandy, a Kandyan lady, a group of Singhalese Buddhist priests, snake charmers, Singhalese devil dancers.A souvenir album with 24 photographic illustrations of Ceylon, in a very rare edition, published by the Colombo Apothecaries Company Ltd.The Colombo Apothecaries Company was a mercantile concern established by W. M. Smith and James Smith Finlay in the De Soysa Buildings, Slave Island, Colombo in 1883. In 1887 it moved into a small store at the junction of York and Prince's Street. In 1889 an oilman's store and a wine and spirits department was added. The store continued to grow. Wright states that 'subsequently stationery, china, fancy goods, photography and photographic supplies, electro-plated ware and boats and shoes [were added]. A further extension took in drapery, outfitting, hardware, toys, games and athletic goods' (Wright, 1907). The company took the name 'Colombo Apothecaries Company' in 1892. An outfitters, tailors and shoemakers branch employed 300 people in Baillie Street. The chairman in 1907 was Sir W. W. Mitchell, the general manager was C. Davidson. In the early 1890s 'the photographic studio was moved to more suitable quarters at Kandy, where climatic influences are more propitious for high class photographic work than in Colombo. At this studio views are turned out by thousands and sent to all parts of the world. They include representations of the famous Buried Cities of Ceylon, concerning which the company publishes a very interesting catalogue; while at the Colombo store is a dark-room, where all conveniences are provided for the use of amateurs, passengers, and others, and a large stock of photographic materials is kept. A completely fitted job-printing department has also been added, having electricity for its motive power' (Wright, 1907). The firm probably took over the stock of Charles T. Scowen and Co.Provenance: Handwritten date and ownership signature at title page, not not easily readable, but it should be: Colombo 15. 9mbre 02 (15 November, 1902) A. Cadeddu.References: Not in ICCU. No copy of this edition in OCLC, which reports an edition in 2 vols with a total of 20 plates (OCLC, 35749502 - 1 copy in USA, University of Washington Libraries, Seattle, WA).

Condition Report: Light brownings at front cover and title page, but very good condition overall, with all photographs in near fine to fine condition.
