Sha'arei HaYichud V'HaEmuna, By Rebbe Aharon of Strashelye - First Edition - Shklow, 1820

Lot 122: Sha'arei HaYichud V'HaEmuna, By Rebbe Aharon of Strashelye - First Edition - Shklow, 1820

by Kedem Public Auction House Ltd

March 11, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Sha'arei HaYichud V'HaEmuna, commentary on the Tanya [on Sha'ar HaYichud V'HaEmuna], by Rabbi Aharon HaLevi "The one singular disciple of our great rabbi... Rabbi Shnuer Zalman [from Liadi] who was his student for thirty years and did not move from him until he revealed all the secrets of his wisdom...". Shklow, [1820]. First edition. Rebbe Aharon HaLevi Horowitz of Strashelye (1766-1829, Encyclopedia L'Chassidut Vol. 1, pp. 147-151), a prominent disciple of the author of the Tanya. After the death of his rabbi in 1813, some of the Chassidim of the Admor HaZaken ordained Rabbi Aharon as his successor. Consequently, Rabbi Aharon established his own court and this instigated a fierce dispute between him and Rebbe Dov Ber ("The Middle Rebbe"), son and successor of the Ba'al HaTanya. The two also disagreed on the exegesis of the Tanya and on other issues of service of G-d. Nonetheless, his compositions and melodies were accepted by Chabad Chassidism. His many writings on Chassidism and Kabbalah were printed and are counted among basic Chassidic literature. Besides the first editions, his books were not reprinted for many years and are therefore rare. Comlete copy, [18], 4, 4, 9-56, 60, 52, 44, [2], 28, [4] leaves. Mispaginated. Light bluish paper. 16.5 cm. Good condition. Stains and wear. Minor restoration to title page and to several leaves. Worm marks to few leaves. Attractive new leather binding. Stefansky Chassidut no. 582.

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €3,200 - €4,000

Description: Brush and ink lithograph on thin Japan paper Germany, 1911 Emil Nolde (1867-1956) - German painter and one of the leading expressionists Signed in pencil 'Emil Nolde' and numbered '18.' Inscribed lower center 'F 6471' in pencil (not by the artist) Copy no. '18' from the edition of only 20 copies Printed at Genthe, Hamburg Catalogue raisonné: Schiefler/Mosel/Urban L 42 Image dimensions: 15.4 x 10.7 cm; sheet dimensions: 30.5 x 20.6 cm Frame: 49 x 37.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany, probably acquired directly from the artist by the previous owner and since in family possession An early brush and ink lithograph which was drawn directly on the stone. The printed oeuvre of Emil Nolde comprises, in addition to woodcuts and etchings, numerous lithographs created by the artist since 1907. In the first years Emil Nolde drew the subject on transfer paper which was applied to the stone. In 1911, after Gustav Schiefler, collector and later author of Nolde's catalogue raisonné, had critized this process, the artist started drawing directly on the stone in the printing studio Genthe in Hamburg and experienced the advantages of this method. From this period comes the present rare lithograph showing a woman's head in profile, from which only 20 copies were printed. Condition: The sheet is along the edges faintly mat-stained and is verso fixed by two brown paper hinges to a support at the left edge, slightly showing through. It is in age-appropriate very good condition. The frame bears small signs of age and use. The image measures 15.4 x 10.7 cm, the sheet is 30.5 x 20.6 cm. The framed dimensions are 49 x 37.5 cm.Emil Nolde (1867-1956) A native of Schleswig-Holstein, Emil Nolde is considered one of the most important exponents of Expressionism. He is best known for his watercolors and expressive color range. After training to be a carver and illustrator at the art school in Flensburg, he worked for various furniture factories in Germany. From 1892 to 1898, he taught design at the Gewerbemuseum in St. Gallen. Nolde became known with his small color drawings of the Swiss mountains, of which he subsequently produced postcards. He later studied painting in Dachau and in 1899 at the Académie Julian in Paris. From 1900 and 1905, he lived alternately in Denmark and Berlin. In the years 1906 to 1907, Nolde was a member of the artist group 'Die Brücke', and he met Edvard Munch in Berlin during that time. In 1909, he became a member of the 'Berliner Secession'. From 1910, he exhibited at the 'New Secession' in the circle of Max Pechstein. Between 1913 and 1914, he travelled to the South Seas, like Paul Gauguin and Max Pechstein. In 1930, Nolde moved to Seebüll. During the Third Reich, Nolde's work was mostly classified as 'degenerate' by the Nazi regime and confiscated or even destroyed. Today, his works are presented in numerous world-class museums, including the Art Institute in Chicago, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, Berlin's Brücke Museum, the Albertina Vienna and the Kunstmuseum Basel. In Seebüll and Berlin, foundations have been set up in his honor. (fea) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
