Rare Anti-Semitic Figure. 2 Movable Sections. A Jew Learning. Quality Porcelain, Meissen. Mid-19th Century

by Winner's Auctions & Exhibitions

July 15, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $5,000

Description: Rare anti-Semitic figure. 2 movable sections. A Jew learning. Quality porcelain, Meissen, Mid-19th century.Figure of a Jew wearing a purple robe, sitting on a chair and learning Torah. He wears a black skullcap and holds a book with Hebrew letters in his hands. The head is separated and rests on the shoulders via a metal rod, with a weight attached to its bottom. This technique allows the head to move, copying characteristic Jewish "shuckling". The bottom jaw is also separate and is attached with a small pin to the head, allowing additional movement of the mouth. The Jew sports a large nose and his eyes are open in a frozen expression.20 cm. high, maximal width, 13 cm. The porcelain techniques that reached Europe in the 18th century allowed for wide dissemination of anti-Semitic ideas. The motifs included the characteristic Jewish stereotypes – the cheater and trickster – and the casts emphasized exterior elements such as the long nose. These figurines poked fun of Jewish customs such as Torah study and prayer. A number of rare porcelain pieces, such as this one, were made from separate sections that allowed for the imitation of Jewish movements.Original stamp of the Meissen factory. Excellent condition. Porcelain figures from these years, in such excellent condition, are very rare.

CHUMASH TORAT GABRIEL, LEVITICUS – JERUSALEM 1926 – IMPRESSIVE LITHOGRAPHY

by Jerusalem of Gold Ltd.

July 27, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Religious Books Leviticus with the Torat Gabriel and Nachal Gevim commentary by Rabbi Gabriel Ze'ev Wolf Margaliyot, a rabbi in Boston, the author of 'Agudat Ezov'. Jerusalem, Zion Print. The title page includes an impressive colorful lithography of the Tomb of Rachel, the Western Wall, the Tomb of Zechariya and the Cave of Machpela. At the head of the page there is a crown and under it the Ten Commandments. It is rare to find such lithography in a book that was printed those days. The book is bound with 'Ginzei Margaliyot' – commentary on the Song of Songs, New York 1921 (the joint cover was done by the publisher. There are copies that include also the commentary of Ruth). With prayers for the Sabbath, table of the first day of the Hebrew months from 1912 to 1920, Yotzrot, table of amendments and a concluding essay. Rabbi Gabriel Ze'ev Wolf Margaliyot was a Torah teacher in several cities in Europe, Horodna among them, where his father-in-law, Rabbi Nachum of Horodna, lived. In 1907 he moved to the USA with his family. He was the rabbi of the 'Adat Yisrael' community in New York. Although he lived in New York, most of his books, as is the book before us, were printed in Jerusalem with the assistance of his son-in-law Azriel Goldberg. In the introduction to his book 'Charuzei Margaliyot' he explains the reasons that brought him to move to the USA: he "can improve the situation of Judaism in America" and "he greatly feared the revolution that took place in Russia those days and the many pogroms". In his introduction to the second part of the book before us he also refers to these events and to World War I. 416 pp. Condition: Very Good.

LIKUTEI MOSHE YA'AKOV, THE HOLY SHOEMAKER – TEL AVIV 1969 – MOST RARE

by Jerusalem of Gold Ltd.

July 27, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Religious Books The book of the Kabbalist Rabbi Moshe Ya'akov Ravikov, called "The Shoemaker Rabbi". Published by his son, the author and translator Yosef Ravikov. The book is based on the outlines the Shoemaker Rabbi himself wrote. "Was published in a hundred copies, which are like manuscripts", was written on the inner cover. The pages were printed on stencil. The picture of the author appears on the introduction page. The Shoemaker Rabbi (1873-1967) studied in his youth with the Kabbalisy Rabbi Shlomo Elyashuv, the author of 'Leshem, Shvi Ve'Achlama'. When he immigrated to Israel, he settled in Kefar Uriya in order to observe the commandments related to the Land of Israel. He was on eof the first members of the Association that bought the lands of Kefar Uriya. After a certain period, he was asked by Rabbi Kook, the rabbi of Jaffa, to move to Jaffa. Rabbi Kook also advised him to be a shoemaker. He became famous as a Kabbalist and many came to him to receive a blessing. The Chazon Ish used to send people to him to be blessed saying "this requires someone greater than me". Rabbi Arye Levin eulogized him: "I heard from Rabbi Kook that Rabbi Ya'akov was undoubtedly one of the 36 hidden tsaddikim!" In 2004, the book was printed in a new edition. Condition: Good-Very Good.

Mount Vernon, NY - Ch. 1772 - $1 Original Series Boss Tweed Signature

by Manifest Auctions

July 11, 2015, 1:00 PM EST

Greenville, SC, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: Nationals collectors will recognize this note as being from one of only four charters that changed town locations and kept the same charter. In January 1873 The East Chester National Bank of Mount Vernon moved to Indiana and became The German National Bank of Evansville. So this ace was issued during the small two year window that the charter was still in New York. However, what is much more interesting about this banknote is that the president of the bank was none other than William M Tweed, aka Boss Tweed. He signed the note as W M Tweed. So while this is a rare item just from a numismatic perspective, it is absolutely fascinating as a piece of New York history.

MEXICANS RETREAT AT NUEVO LEON

by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

July 8, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $250 - $350

Description: MEXICANS RETREAT AT NUEVO LEON COL. FRANCISCO GONZALEZ PAVON A.L. secretarially-signed, 2pp., folio, Meir, Tamaulipas, Nov. 11, 1838. An unsigned manuscript copy in Spanish reporting on the disastrous retreat of Gonzalez Pavon at Nuevo Leon, stamped "Secreteria de Gobierno del Departamento de Nuevo Leon" at top left corner. Though Anglo Texans won independence from Mexico in 1836, skirmishes and battles over adjacent cities continued until the Mexican-American War in 1846. Here, Federalist Texans collaborating with Colonel Antonio Canales prepared to storm Mier, defended by Gonzalez Pavon and his first regiment of Cavalry; Gonzalez Pavon fled with troops and artillery to Monterrey, and the Texans pursued. Later, in October 1839, at the Battle of Alcantra, Col. Francisco González Pavón commanded the Centralist troops that occupied the Mexican Rio Grande border town of Mier. The following morning Pavón and the Centralist forces, without water, tried to move towards a source of water but were cut off by the Texans. After a brief skirmish, Pavón surrendered, for which the Mexican government court-martialed him. Minor folds, else very good.
