Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €1,200 - €1,560

Description: Oil on panelSpain, circa 1600Circle of Luis de Morales (c. 1509-1586) - Spanish painterChrist at the ColumnGilt stucco frameOverall dimensions, framed: 107.5 x 83 cmProvenance: Private collection, GermanyA dramatic contemporary representation of one of the most famous subjects by the great Luis de MoralesEstimate by Auctionata Expert: 7000 EURThe present depiction of Christ at the column was painted in oil on panel around 1600 by a Spanish painter from the circle of Luis de Morales. The Ecce Homo was a subject often visited by Morales. The present composition is characterized by a dramatic close view to the upper body of Christ. The blood runs from the crown of thorns onto his face, and his hands are sore from the cords that bind him to the column. A praying figure, possibly the donor, is depicted lower right. The panel consists of two parts, which are hold together by batons; the right part is a later addition. In the upper left corner, there is missing a small piece of wood. The paint surface is thin in places, shows some scratches and areas of paint losses in the upper part of the painting. There are some areas of discolored retouching affecting the flesh tones of Christ. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of retouching to the background, the body of Christ, and especially at the intersection of the two wooden parts. The gilt stucco frame shows some minor material losses. The overall dimensions, framed, are 107.5 x 83 cm, and the panel measures 90.5 x 65 cm.Luis de Morales (c.1509-1586)The Spanish painter Luis de Morales was also called ‘El Divino’. He painted religious subjects with the expression of a strong piety. In his early work, his Mannerist style of painting was influenced by the Italian masters, especially by Raphael, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. His later work shows the influence of German and Flemish masters. As his most important work is considered his series of 20 panels depicting the life of Christ (1563-68), located in the Church of Arroyo del Puerco. Other works can be found in important museum collections, including the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the London National Gallery, the Art Institute in Chicago and the Museum of the Hispanic Society of America in New York City. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

O/C Rocky Shoreline, Xavier Bartle, (1891-1981)

by Louis J. Dianni, LLC

August 8, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

Garrison, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $800

Description: Category: Paintings Description: Rocky Shoreline This painting appears to be of a beach in Rockport, MA, In 1907, his mother brought him, his two younger brothers and two sisters to New York, to join their father who had been in New York for several years, preparing the way. He quickly learned English and spent some time helping his father, who was earning a living for the family as a tailor. Having learned English well, Barile then enrolled in the Evening Art Classes at Cooper Union Institute in New York. In due course he enrolled in the Art Students League, New York City. Here he came under the influence of John Sloan, Reginald Marsh and Victor Perard as teachers and George Luks, Robert Henri and Everett Shinn of "the Eight" as friends and colleagues. In 1939 John Sloan dedicated his book, Gist of Art as follows, "To my old friend, first monitor of my first class at the Art Students League 1914." This friendship and mutual regard lasted until Sloan's death in 1951. Of course, it was only natural that Barile should be a part of the "Ashcan School," painting the New York Scene. During this time that he was on his own he worked with all mediums - oil, watercolor, pastel, casein, charcoal, etc. - and he did some fine work with monotypes. It was during these years, the 20's and 30's, that he began to exhibit in such places as the Whitney Studio Club (forerunner of the Whitney Museum of American Art), The Kit Kat Club, The Anderson Gallery, The Cincinnati Museum, The New Mexico Museum, National Society of Painters in Casein, The Salmagundi Club and many other exhibits throughout the United States. He is currently represented in The National Collection of Fine Arts (NCFA) Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. In the mid 30's, like many another struggling artist, XJB worked on the WPA Art Project. One of the murals he worked on is in the U.S. Customs House, Bowling Green, N.Y.C. In this project he collaborated with Reginald Marsh who was the supervisor of this phase of the work. The years until 1939 were spent working in all parts of the United States and in conducting his own classes for aspiring artists. In 1939, on the recommendation of John Sloan, he became the founder, first teacher and Chairman of The Department of Fine Arts, Pueblo Junior College, Pueblo Colorado. He held that position until 1945 when he returned to his beloved New York. His work during that period reflects his interest and fascination with the West and Southwest. The Pueblo-College History says, "Mr. Xavier J. Barile came to the college as Head of the Art Department in 1939. Under his guidance the Department developed into an outstanding asset in the community" After his return to New York, he again began teaching, with his Barile Fine Arts Group. He continued teaching and producing, to the point where every part of the United States, Nassau and Mexico is represented in his word. In 1961, at the age of 70, he married his student, Lolita de Silva, a budding artist much younger than himself. It was the first marriage for both of them. The marriage lasted until 1979 when Lolita, who had suffered several nervous breakdowns, was taken back to Mexico by her family. Barile lived to ninety years of age, mentally alert almost to the end of his life. At his age, he was one of the last, if not the last of the artists of the Ashcan School.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN - A DOG'S LIFE ORIGINAL 1920'S R STILL.

by Simon Parr's Auctions Ltd

August 8, 2015, 2:00 PM BST

Wallsend, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £60 - £80

Description: Film Description: A Dog's Life, the 1918 Charlie Chaplin silent screwball comedy (The one and only Charles Chaplin in his first million dollar picture His Signature. A First National Attraction) starring Charlie Chaplin (as the Tramp), Edna Purviance, Syd Chaplin, Henry Bergman, and Charles Reisner. Note that one of the lobby cards refers to the dog as Jack, but the IMDb lists him as being billed as scraps and that he is played by Mut. Note that Chaplin was so incredibly popular in 1918, that First National had to pay him a million dollars per movie to lure him away from his previous studio (which was a staggering amount of money in 1918)! Naturally, they wanted to get some advertising value out of their massive expenditure, so they advertised the movie as His First Million Dollar Comedy.

Condition Report: Very good.
