VERNON AH KEE, born 1967, EDDIE AH KEE, 2008, charcoal, crayon and synthetic polymer paint on canvas

by Deutscher and Hackett

May 6, 2015, 7:00 PM AEST

South Yarra, Australia

Estimated Price: AUD15,000 - AUD20,000

Description: VERNON AH KEE, born 1967, EDDIE AH KEE, 2008, charcoal, crayon and synthetic polymer paint on canvas SIGNED: signed and dated verso: Vernon A 2008 DIMENSIONS: 180.0 x 240.0 cm PROVENANCE: Milani Gallery, Brisbane Private collection, Melbourne EXHIBITED: 16th Biennale of Sydney, Cockatoo Island, Sydney, 18 June - 7 September, 2008 ESSAY: 'Vernon Ah Kee's conceptual text pieces, videos, photographs and drawings are a critique of Australian popular culture from the perspective of the Aboriginal experience of contemporary life. For the 16th Biennale of Sydney, 2008, Ah Kee exhibits 12 charcoal and pastel drawings on canvas that continue his series of portraits of his family. The focus of each subject is their 'gaze' - the way they look back at the viewer. Ah Kee's drawings respond to the history of romantic and exoticised portraiture of 'primitives', and effectively reposition the Aboriginal in Australia from an 'othered thing' anchored in museum and scientific records to a contemporary people inhabiting real and current spaces and time. The drawings inhabit the space as an Aboriginal and 'human' presence. On gazing at the oversized portraits the viewer experiences a sense of discomfort, as the confrontational act of the stare, of facing an accuser, of exercising a right of reply, is strongly felt.'1 1.See http://biennale.sitesuite.cn/app/biennale/artist/24, viewed 9 April 2015 The following information is quoted from the artist's website: vernonahkee.blogspot.com 'Born in Far North Queensland, Vernon Ah Kee is a conceptual artist and a founding member of the Brisbane-based proppaNOW artists' collective. He has a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Hons) from the Queensland College of Art, Brisbane. Vernon's work critiques Australian popular culture, particularly the dichotomy between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal societies and cultures. His art practice consists of video, 3D installation, photography, digital design, painting, printmaking, and drawing. Vernon represented Australia at the 53rd Venice Biennale in the group exhibition Once Removed, 2009. Adams, Sydney Thence by descent Private collection, Sydney ESSAY: After decades of neglect, Herbert Badham has been rediscovered as a major figure in Australian art. Born in Watsons Bay, Sydney, just before the end of the 19th century, he left school and became a clerk before joining the Royal Australian Navy in 1917. He began art studies at the Sydney Art School in 1921, joining contemporaries William Dobell, Douglas Dundas and Charles Meere. The discipline of his early career and naval service suggests a methodical mind and a need for order, draughtsmanship and planning. His work reflected those values in structured figure compositions strongly influenced by English realism. Depicting the life of urban Sydney with keen observation and wry good humour, he chose subjects from the everyday world of the shop, the street and the bar-room. Herbert Badham taught at East Sydney Technical College from 1938 and remained there until his death in 1961. He imparted to his students his interest in design, formal composition and structure, elements that gradually fell from favour in the wide adoption of expressionism and abstraction. There were hints of social realism in his subjects and anecdotal reporting of ordinary life, but with little political edge or reforming zeal in his quirky depictions of the everyday. His subjects are calm, open, direct and comfortable in their surroundings. A portrait of his wife at the breakfast table, acquired by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1936, is an enduring image of the quiet good life. Even when depicting everyday life in wartime Sydney, Badham was happy to show that, despite restrictions and rationing, life went on. Snack Bar is a classic of Badham's style and shows his fascination with groups of people in ordinary situations. In a remarkably modest space, he has presented some fourteen recognisable figures, each clearly portrayed as a type and an individual. Visiting American servicemen and women are at home in the Hasty Tasty snack bar in Kings Cross, sitting happily among the mixed bunch of Aussies from 'civvy street'. Badham does provide gentle social comment, with a black American GI keeping close company with a local girl, while the well-satisfied businessmen happily hoe into the simple fare. Rationing might have been in force, but nobody goes hungry in the Hasty Tasty. The venue itself was woven into the rich tapestry of Sydney life - from its hosting of the nation's first AA meetings to its cameo role in They're a Weird Mob, the doors never closed on the denizens of the Cross. The colour is elegant and restrained, symbolic perhaps of the straightened circumstances of war, in a part of the city thronging with servicemen on leave from the Naval dockyards at the bottom of the hill. Snack Bar featured in the Badham retrospective mounted by the S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney in 1987 and stands alongside the record breaking Travellers, 1933 as a major work in his oeuvre.

AARON HENRY GORSON (American 1872-1933) A PAINTING,

by Simpson Galleries

May 17, 2015, 1:00 PM CST

Houston, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $15,000 - $25,000

Description: AARON HENRY GORSON (American 1872-1933) A PAINTING, "Steel Mill Pennsylvania," oil on canvas, signed L/L. 26" x 30" NOTE: Pioneer industrial landscapist Aaron Harry Gorson, born in 1872, came to the United States in 1890 from his native Lithuania. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Anshutz. In Paris in 1899, he studied at the Academie Colarossi with Jean Paul Laurens, and the Academie Julien with Benjamin Constant. After Paris, Gorson returned to Pittsburgh in 1903 where he lived and painted until the early 1920s. He was a true urban poet of the paintbrush, in love with the night time beauty of industrial Pittsburgh, the magic of smelting and manufacturing, the glowing of the many lights and their effects on the multi-shaped clouds of smoke amid the setting of the curving Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers. What we today, in our perhaps overly sentimental environmental way, would view only as pollution, Gorson saw as moving visual poetry and monumental artistic beauty. Gorson's paintings of the mills were highly prized by collectors during the last thirty years of his life, and he is remembered today for his achievements in this genre. He was also widely exhibited in major American art museums like the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C., Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and National Academy of Design in New York City.

A 1:64 SCALE BUILDER'S MODEL FOR THE FAMED 'NORTH ATLANTIC GREYHOUND' MAURE

by Charles Miller Ltd

May 12, 2015, 11:00 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £30,000 - £50,000

Description: A 1:64 SCALE BUILDER'S MODEL FOR THE FAMED 'NORTH ATLANTIC GREYHOUND' MAURETANIA, BUILT FOR CUNARD BY SWAN HUNTER & WIGHAM RICHARDSON, TYNE AND WEAR, 1906 carved from laminated wood, replete with gilt and painted fittings and superstructure and finished in Cunard service livery, mounted on seven turned balustrade supports on later display base within modern two-part case supported on three ebonised plinths. Model measurements -- 42 x 153½ x 17in. (106.5 x 390 x 43cm.); Cased measurements overall -- 79 x 173½ x 24in. (200.5 x 440 x 61cm.) Provenance: Loaned by Swan Hunter to the Science Museum, London 1938-2015, Ref No. 1938-507. This model is available for viewing from mid-March, 2015 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Chelsea, Imperial Road, Imperial Wharf, SW6 2GA - please see map inside back cover. Charles Miller Ltd is grateful for their kind assistance. It is thought that this model probably appeared in a pre-War exhibition about the famed 'Blue Riband' but was then dismantled for the duration of hostilities. After the War, the ageing 1864 museum buildings were largely rebuilt and the fine collection of both ship and engineering models it had inherited from the old South Kensington Museum (which in turn had inherited them from the Royal Institution of Naval Architects) returned in the 1963 installation of the Shipping Gallery. It seems likely that it was at this time that the models were removed from their original cases and placed on uniform plinths within more standard exhibition cases. The Shipping Gallery was closed in 2012, having lasted fully forty-nine years, and the models removed to various storage facilities in London and Wiltshire. The precise fate of the original ship model cases, bases and plates appears not to have been recorded and, sadly, the one which had housed this particular model has still not been located and must therefore be presumed destroyed. A companion model to this lot, which retains its original carved mahogany case, display base and builder's plates, can be seen in the Discovery Museum, Newcastle to where it was likewise loaned by Swan Hunter in 1938. Of all the great liners that plied the North Atlantic, the first-named Mauretania was perhaps the most famous. Conceived with her sister Lusitania, the two ships were built as a British response to the increasing threat to Cunard's domination of the transatlantic passenger trade posed by the White Star Line which, in 1901, had passed into American ownership. Mauretania, at 31,938 tons, was launched on 20th September 1906, and was ready for trials exactly a year later. Her builders, Swan Hunter, handed her over to Cunard on 7th November 1907, and she sailed from Liverpool on her maiden voyage to New York on 16 November. On the return passage, she established a new record for the eastward crossing with an average speed of 23.69 knots, amply justifying the faith that had been placed in her giant turbine engines. In May 1908 she broke the record for the westbound crossing, only losing it to her sister a few months later. In September 1909 her average speed on the westward passage reached 26.06 knots and this new record was to stand for twenty years until broken by the German liner Bremen. Both Lusitania and Mauretania were financed with Government loans and, when completed, Cunard received an annual subsidy for them in return for the promise to make the ships available to the Government in the event of a national emergency. When the Great War broke out, however, the authorities perceived at once that the two liners were far too large to be fitted-out as cruisers. At first Mauretania was laid up and then served as both a troop transport and a hospital ship. Lusitania continued the New York passenger service but fell victim to the German submarine U20, which torpedoed and sank her, with a huge loss of life, on 7 May 1915. After the Armistice in 1918, Mauretania was initially kept busy repatriating American troops until the following May, but on 27 June 1919, she cleared Southampton for New York and resumed the scheduled service with her new consort Aquitania. In July, 1921, Mauretania was severely damaged by fire in Southampton Docks and, during the subsequent repairs, her accommodation was remodelled and her coal furnaces were converted to oil. Returning to service in March, 1922, she once again justified the capital spent on her conversion by setting new speed records and regularly averaging 25.5 knots. Despite her advancing age, she was becoming an institution among the travelling public and became almost a living legend as the 1920s drew to a close. When she lost the 'Blue Riband' to the Bremen in July 1929, she took up the challenge to recover it immediately with her fastest-ever crossings over the measured distance. Her average speed on the homeward run of 27.2 knots just failed to catch the Bremen's 27.9 but it was an astonishing achievement for the twenty-two year old veteran against the brand new German contender. The international economic climate sent her cruising to warmer waters after 1930, although she still did the occasional transatlantic crossing. She left New York for the last time on 26 September 1934, ironically the very same day that the Queen Mary was launched on Clydeside; Mauretania's reign was drawing to an end. In April 1935 she was sold for scrapping and, following the auction of her interior fittings, she sailed for Rosyth and the breaker's yard. The public mourned her as affectionately as they had honoured her in her prime. She had won for herself a place in maritime history such as no other steamship had ever done and it was not in the least surprising that even long after she had been broken up, she was still always known as 'The Grand Old Lady of the Atlantic'. ++In fine and original condition overall. A thin layer of dust could be cleaned off at some point, but it is not intrusive at this stage. The present case is designed as a temporary one for sale purposes and, whilst it will serve in the short term, it is strongly recommended that a new glazed case is commissioned.

Henry Nicolas Jeaurat de Bertry, A Kitchen Still Life with Poultry, Vegetables and Bread

by Lempertz

May 16, 2015, 11:00 AM CET

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: €10,000 - €15,000

Description: In the past, many of Henry Nicolas Jeaurat de Bertry's still lifes have falsely been attributed to Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin; a mistake that pertains to the high quality of this artist's works. De Bertry was born in Paris in 1728, making him a generation younger than Chardin, and was taught by his uncle Étienne Jeaurat, who was a professor at the Royal Academy and director of the Royal Art Collection at Versailles. He was accepted to the Académie Royale for two still lifes in 1756 and specialised in this genre, although his oeuvre also contains city views and genre scenes. Five years later we find him at Versailles, where he became court painter and attained the title of Peintre de la Reine. Henry Nicolas Jeaurat de Bertry

Edward Filene autograph MS signed by Boston retailer on peace

by Lion Heart Autographs

May 15, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $600

Description: "Peace is a growth and not a manufacture" - FILENE, EDWARD. (1860-1937). American businessman and humanitarian. AMsS. (“Edward A. Filene”). 1p. Folio. Geneva, September 19, 1927. ----- "Contrary to popular belief Peace is a growth and not a manufacture; which simply means you can not “make” a lasting peace. Such a peace will be brought about only by conditions that are just to all – just to the rich as well as to the poor. Above all conditions that give every man the certainty of getting enough properly paid work to make an adequate living for his wife, his children, and himself; and to keep him and the masses of his fellow-men from supporting war or revolution in the belief that any change is preferable to existing conditions." ----- The son of German immigrants, Filene observed his father’s life in America begin as a peddler and finish as the owner of several successful department stores. With his brother Abraham, Edward built upon his father’s success to create the Boston-based Filene’s, one of the largest such stores in the nation. Its success was due to Filene’s many innovations including a “money back guarantee” and the creation of Filene’s Basement, an annex designed to move excess merchandise at reduced prices. Filene was also an innovator in worker relations implementing such programs as profit sharing, paid vacations, a 40-hour work week, and a credit union for his employees. However, his interest expanded beyond his own staff, and he led an initiative known as the Boston 1915 Movement dedicated to improving working class housing conditions, transportation and access to civic institutions and services such as libraries and parks. Following the devastation of WWI, the World League for Peace was formed taking its name from President Wilson’s 1917 Senate speech that bore the same title. Under the leadership of its president George Dejean, the organization assembled an anthology that included comments written about peace by notable persons from around the world. Between 1925 and 1932, entries were received from royalty, politicians, artists, musicians, and writers including Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, Marie Curie, Marconi, Einstein, Baden-Powell, King Faisal, Maginot, Colette, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Pirandello, Unamuno, Le Corbusier, Foujita, and Paul Signac. The collaboration led to the 1932 publication in Switzerland of a deluxe, limited edition volume entitled Pax Mundi: livre d'or de la paix. Written on a folio sized sheet of vellum, which is slightly yellowed on the left side. Broadly written and signed and uncommon.
