Document signed by artist Georgia O'Keeffe outlining arrangements for her sister’s collection of her paintings

by Lion Heart Autographs

September 30, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $1,800

Description: O’Keeffe Outlines Terms to Dispose of Her Paintings in Her Sister’s Possession ********** O’KEEFFE, GEORGIA. (1887-1986). Popular and prolific American painter known for her sun-bleached cattle skulls, flowers and desert horizons. TDS. (“G. OK” and “Georgia O’Keeffe”). 1 2/3 pp. 4to. Abiquiu, August 27, 1971. To her sister, Anita O’Keeffe Young. ********** “This will confirm conversations between us regarding my paintings owned by you (see List A) and my paintings lent to you by me (see Lists B and C). As to those paintings owned by you (see List A), you agree upon your death by last will and testament or other undertaking to cause these paintings to go to the institutions designated on List A. I would like you to make it a condition of such a gift that these institutions may not lend these paintings, except for once in twenty years. Such a loan could only be for a major retrospective exhibition of my work held by a museum or an equivalent exhibition of the Stieglitz Collection, or for some unforeseen situation of special importance which may come up. I would also like you to ask that the O’Keeffe frame which I have designed (silver or metal) be kept on these paintings, unless the institution wishes to show them without any frame at all. Such agreement on your part so to dispose of these paintings in no way restricts your right to sell them during your lifetime in case you are in personal need. Should you need to sell any of these paintings, however, you will give me or my legal representative the right to purchase the painting or paintings to be disposed of at the prices you paid for them. As to those paintings loaned by me to you, all of which are set forth on Lists B and C, receipt of which by you is acknowledged, we have agreed between us that you may retain these paintings during your lifetime, even though I may predecease you, unless the provisions in my will concerning this do not hold. At any time during your lifetime I or my legal representatives may request in writing the return of two paintings per year of the paintings on Lists B and C, and you will undertake to return them to me at your expense. If, at any time during your lifetime you desire to return all or part of the paintings to me, you may do so by notifying me or my legal representatives in writing, and sending them at your expense by my packer to a destination designated in writing by me. Should you be severely incapacitated so that you cannot enjoy these paintings, it is our understanding that those on List A should be placed on loan at the designated institutions after consultation with me or my legal representative, and that those on Lists B and C be returned to me. It is agreed that you will take all possible precautions to care for the paintings on Lists B and C as if they were your own, and that you will keep the paintings on all three lists in one of your three residences (900 Fifth Avenue, New York; 548 North Country Road, Palm Beach, Florida; or Ochre Point, Newport, Rhode Island) except when in transit from one residence to another. It is further agreed that should any paintings on Lists A, B, and C need a conservator’s care for their preservation, that this may only be done in consultation with me or my representatives, using the person who takes care of such problems for me in my own work. Work to be done on List A would be paid for by you, work on Lists B and C would be paid for by me, unless damage is due to negligence. Should any of the paintings on List A be lost, stolen, or damaged, your obligations as designated above for List A are of no force. It is understood that the foregoing constitutes our entire understanding and that neither you nor I have any obligations one to the other, except for those set forth above. If you agree with the foregoing, please sign and initial both pages of the carbon copy of this letter and return it to me as soon as possible. Very truly yours…” ********** O’Keeffe was the first daughter born into a family of seven children and was sent, with the rest of her sisters, to receive an art education near their home in Wisconsin. Georgia’s superior abilities, however, prompted her parents to enroll her into Chicago’s Art Institute and the Art Students League in New York, where she settled. Drawn to the New Mexican desert, which inspired her artistically and spiritually, she discovered in 1931 the small village of Abiquiu, located about an hour from Santa Fe, where she purchased an adobe hacienda in 1945. After the death of her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz, O’Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico and continued to paint the austere landscapes, sun-bleached bones, churches, and flowers for which she became so well known. O’Keeffe’s sister Anita was a society hostess and philanthropist married to the financier and industrialist Robert R. “Railroad” Young. The wealthy couple maintained lavish residences in Palm Beach, New York and Newport, mentioned in our letter, and counted among their friends the stylish Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Their daughter was Eleanor “Cookie” Young, the first so-called “glamour debutante” of the 1930s. Our letter is accompanied by photocopies of Lists A, B and C, detailing the paintings owned by and lent to Mrs. Young, including works entitled Jimson Weed, Winter Cottonwoods East V, Calla Lilies on Red, Abstraction – White Rose III, and Red Hills and White Flower. Next to each listed work is the corresponding insurance value, year, media, dimensions (in some cases), and public institution for which it was intended. The institutions mentioned include the National Gallery of Art, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Despite her own careful planning, O’Keeffe’s will was contested because of codicils added to benefit Juan Hamilton, a young potter who had become her companion late in life. The resulting court proceedings set new legal precedents in the field of estate planning with large portions of her estate going to Santa Fe’s Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. ********** Very darkly initialed and signed in O’Keeffe’s flowing, baroque hand. Folded with staple holes in the upper left corner and with the original envelope. In very good condition. An unusual document detailing O’Keeffe’s plans for her artistic legacy.

After a successful career as a graphic designer and illustrator, Palmer developed a distinctive graphic style in his fine art. His Story is a very good example from popular Civil Rights series. Arctic explorer Robert E. Peary and Civil War Gen. Daniel E. Sickles 1912 Brooklyn Sunday School Union menu signed

by Lion Heart Autographs

September 30, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $600

Description: PEARY, ROBERT E. (1856-1920). American admiral and explorer; widely recognized as the first person to reach the North Pole. Menu Signed. (“R.E. Peary”). 1p. 8vo. Brooklyn, June 6, 1912. Additionally signed by controversial politician and Civil War Union general DANIEL E. SICKLES. (1819-1914). (“D.E. Sickles”). A menu for “The Eighty Third Anniversary Parade of the Brooklyn Sunday School Union.” ********** In 1861, the Brooklyn Sunday School Union organized the first parade to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of its founding. The annual event was later recognized by proclamations in both city and state legislatures and has been celebrated variously as “Anniversary Day” and “Brooklyn Day.” The event, now called “Brooklyn-Queens Day,” still takes place during the first weekend in June. ********** In 1891, Peary, accompanied by his wife and his team, set off for Greenland to prove by inland exploration that the icy wilderness was in fact an island. Two years later, he sailed on another expedition in an attempt to be the first to reach the North Pole. Despite several setbacks, Peary remained undeterred: “In the years up to 1900 Peary made several unsuccessful attempts on the Pole, during one of which the temperature fell to –50o Celsius (–58o Fahrenheit) and eight of his toes had to be amputated because of severe frostbite. With each attempt he became more determined, enlisting the aid of the Peary Arctic Society [and] of congressmen,” (Great Explorers, Owen). In 1903, he was elected president of the American Geographical Society and that autumn he garnered the unexpected support of both the secretary of the navy and President Theodore Roosevelt. After a failed attempt in 1905, “the next three years were spent in preparation for a final try,” (ibid.). Finally after traveling hundreds of miles across ice in conditions more extreme than any previously encountered, Peary and his team reached the Pole on April 6, 1909. Yet his claim was challenged by Dr. Frederick Cook who maintained that he had reached the Pole exactly one year earlier. “In October 1909 a committee of experts appointed by the National Geographic Society examined his records and reported that they were unanimously of the opinion that [Peary] had reached the North Pole… His friends also worked actively to induce Congress to give adequate recognition to his achievements… In March 1911…a bill was passed tendering him the thanks of Congress and placing him on the retired list,” (DAB). Peary’s ties to Brooklyn include his employment at the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a civil engineer prior to his career as an explorer, and he was an honorary member of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. ********** Although he did not have a military background, Sickles, a New York congressman, became a prominent officer during the Civil War. He recruited many New York regiments including the Army of the Potomac’s Excelsior Brigade, but his insubordination at the Battle of Gettysburg and the loss of his leg ended his military career. In the subsequent Congressional hearings on the battle he defended his actions while disparaging those of Major General George G. Meade. ********** Prior to his checkered military career, Sickles’ personal life had been rife with scandal. In 1852, against the objections of both their families, he married the teenage Teresa Bagioli of Brooklyn (granddaughter of Lorenzo da Ponte, Mozart’s librettist), who was half his age. While she was pregnant, he openly consorted with a well-known New York prostitute named Fanny White, presented her to Queen Victoria while he impersonated a political rival and brought her into the New York State Assembly chambers, for which he was censured. In 1859, in the park across from the White House, he murdered the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia and son of Francis Scott Key, Philip Barton Key II, a flirtatious widower who Sickles discovered was having an affair with his wife. Sickles’ attorney, future Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, successfully employed a defense of “temporary insanity,” the first time such a strategy had been used. ********** After the war, Sickles oversaw aspects of Reconstruction and resumed his Congressional career during which he helped preserve the battlefield at Gettysburg. He was a noted bibliophile and, despite the scandals associated with his name, Sickles served as minister to Spain from 1869-1874. ********** Both men have signed diagonally in dark ink across the front of the menu. Sickles has added the date and place. An unidentified hand has printed “Robert E. Peary / Arctic Explorer” in the lower right corner. Some uneven age toning with a barely visible vertical crease in the top margin. In very fine condition. Uncommon.
