AN EARLY 19TH-CENTURY NELSON-RELATED STERN CARVING carved in laminate

Lot 121: AN EARLY 19TH-CENTURY NELSON-RELATED STERN CARVING carved in laminate

by Charles Miller Ltd

May 12, 2015, 11:00 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £5,000 - £8,000

Description: AN EARLY 19TH-CENTURY NELSON-RELATED STERN CARVING carved in laminated yellow pine and in the form of a trophy-of-arms with Victory lamenting over a profile of Nelson on a Union Flag shield with flags, masts, rigging etc. behind -- 70 x 37in. (178 x 94cm.) Whilst it is not certain at present which ship this impressive carving came from, two plausible candidates suggest themselves: H.M.Ships Horatio, a 5th Rate of 1807; and Nelson, a 1st Rate built in 1814. No satisfactory carving plans survive, however the case for locating it to the Nelson is compelling as larger ships still enjoyed ornate taffrail decoration and the substantial nature of this carving suggests it was from a larger ship. The Nelson, one of five 'Nelson Class' vessels (the others being Howe, St. Vincent, Prince Regent and Britannia), was, like her namesake, quite a poor sailor and proved "very crank" at sea. Launched too late for action during the Napoleonic wars, she remained incomplete until 1854 and was cut down to a two-decker in 1859 reducing her from 120 to 89 guns and was also fitted with engines. She was presented to the Australian Colonial Government of Victoria in 1867 as a coastal defence and training vessel, was sold in 1908 and broken up in 1928 at Launceston, her fine figurehead of Nelson is preserved in the Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney. ++Overall this carving appears very sound with some typical wear for age around the edges where it has suffered some knocks or scuffs. There do not appear to be any serious issues such as shrinkage cracks etc.

THE BUILDER'S ¼IN.: 1FT. SCALE HALF-BLOCK MODEL FOR THE LEGENDARY TEA CLIPP

Lot 373: THE BUILDER'S ¼IN.: 1FT. SCALE HALF-BLOCK MODEL FOR THE LEGENDARY TEA CLIPP

by Charles Miller Ltd

May 12, 2015, 11:00 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £6,000 - £8,000

Description: THE BUILDER'S ¼IN.: 1FT. SCALE HALF-BLOCK MODEL FOR THE LEGENDARY TEA CLIPPER THERMOPYLÆ, BUILT FOR G. THOMPSON & CO BY WALTER HOOD, ABERDEEN, 1868 carved from 5/8in. laminated yellow pine with black-painted topsides, rudder, carved warrior-form figurehead and cut-away masts, mounted on wooden display board with nameplate inscribed CHINA CLIPPER "THERMOPYLÆ" / ABERDEEN LINE, and brass builder's plate engraved THERMOPYLÆ / 212 x 36 x 21. / 947 TONS. / WALTER HOOD & Co. / ABERDEEN / 1868 -- 10½ x 50½in. (26.5 x 128cm.) Provenance: Walter Hood & Co., Builders, and thence by descent. A contemporary full-hull proposal model for Thermopylæ forms part of the collection at the Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums Collections, Accession Number: ABDMS003130. Thermopylæ was built in Walter Hood's yards in Aberdeen in 1868, to the order of George Thompson & Co of London. Designed by Bernard Waymouth, she was 212 feet long and registered at 947 tons (net). A splendid sea boat, she was fast in any weather and especially quick at going to windward. Launched on 19th August 1868, she sailed from Gravesend on her maiden voyage to Melbourne on 7th November the same year. Anchoring in Port Phillip after a record run of 60 days (pilot to pilot), she went straight on to Newcastle, NSW, to load cargo for Shanghai. Crossing the Pacific in another record passage of 28 days, she then proceeded to Foochow to load tea. In the race home, she narrowly missed setting the record time for the year, and this first voyage set the standard for her entire career. Continuing to make extremely fast passages throughout the 1870s, she loaded her final tea cargo at Foochow in 1881, before being transferred to the Australian wool route. During the 1880s, she frequently raced her old tea-trade rival Cutty Sark from Sydney to London, via Cape Horn. Her best passage was 76 days in 1882, although Cutty Sark, who revelled in the stronger winds of the southern hemisphere, was generally quicker. In 1890 Thermopylæ was sold to Canadian owners for £5,000 and from 1892 to 1895 she was used in the trans-Pacific trade. In 1896 she was resold to the Portuguese Government, renamed Pedro Nunes and put to work as a cadet training ship. Her condition deteriorated gradually and by 1907 her working life was over. On 13th October that year, she was towed out of the Tagus into the open sea and sunk by gunfire; it was a sad end for such a thoroughbred as she. Considered by many to have been the fastest clipper of them all, there were even those who believed her to be the fastest sailing vessel ever launched. Whatever the truth of the claims, she was - and has remained - one of the legends of the age of sail. ++Model is in original and unrestored condition, lacking bowsprit; display board has some shrinkage to the extreme left and right vertical sections and some white paint along some edges (where a wall was painted around the model); the figurehead is slightly loose as missing bowsprit no longer keeps it in situ, but firmly attached still; minor wear to paint commensurate with age, but no serious scratches, knocks etc in evidence.

References: The Warring States period (simplified Chinese: ; traditional Chinese: ; pinyin: Zhànguó Shídài) is a period in ancient China following the Spring and Autumn period and concluding with the victory of the state of Qin in 221 BC, creating a unified China under the Qin dynasty. Different scholars use dates for the beginning of the period ranging between 481 BC and 403 BC, but Sima Qian's date of 475 BC is most often cited. Most of this period coincides with the second half of the Eastern Zhou dynasty, although the Chinese sovereign (king of Zhou) was merely a figurehead. The name of the period was derived from the Record of the Warring States, a work compiled early in the Han dynasty.

Different scholars use dates for the beginning of the period ranging between 481 BC and 403 BC, but Sima Qian's date of 475 BC is most often cited.
