John Steinbeck letter about the death of Charley, his dog and traveling companion

by Lion Heart Autographs

September 30, 2015, 12:00 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $1,400 - $1,600

Description: “I am sorry to have to tell you that Charley died two weeks ago” ********** STEINBECK, JOHN. (1902-1968). American author of The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men and winner of the 1962 Nobel Prize for Literature. ALS. (“John”). 1p. Folio. Sag Harbor, May 7, (1963). Written in pencil and blue ink on a sheet of lined yellow legal-size paper to HOWARD GOSSAGE (1917-1969), advertising executive affectionately known as the “Socrates of San Francisco.” ********** “I read of all kinds of reorganization in your firm. I do hope this does not mean you are not going to write copy. I am loaded with inventions but most of them have to do with a war we pretend we aren’t fighting and you know how far I will get with those. I am sorry to have to tell you that Charley died two weeks ago. It leaves a jagged hole in our house. This is the season where we go in and out of town like birds trying to find a place to nest. We’re at Sag now. Friday to N.Y., then back here for the summer. Do you have the Volkswagen account? It seems to me that you do. Reason I ask is that the last time I went all around the country, I did things all wrong. I am redesigning an interior for living and Volks would probably be the proper basis. Do they have toy models of the station wagon? I would like to make a scale model of what I have in mind. There’s one thing wrong with all camper trucks and I have a way to cure it. As the boys (my boys) say – “It will make our fortune.” O.K. That’s all…” ********** Gossage was a groundbreaking advertising executive known as “The Socrates of San Francisco.” He co-founded the Freeman, Mander and Gossage agency and counted among his clients Land Rover, the Sierra Club, Qantas Airways, and Petrofina Oil Co. The firehouse, which was home to his agency, was a hub of intellectualism and frequent visitors included futurist Buckminster Fuller as well as authors Tom Wolfe and John Steinbeck. ********** Steinbeck was fascinated with inventors, and Samuel Hamilton, one of the central characters in his seminal work East of Eden, is an inventor and farmer. The book also includes a lengthy passage about “patent fever.” Steinbeck himself “was a tinkerer, lover of all things mechanical like cars and weapons. ‘Give me a box of odds and ends of metal and wood and I can build dam [sic] near anything,’ he wrote in 1951 (Benson 674). Inventions for his house fell into that category. ‘Someone once said of me that if I bought the Washington Monument, I would start covering it with leather’ (‘Letters to Alicia,’ 11 Dec. 1965). He carved wood and planned to do an article on the artisans of Florence. Steinbeck was ever drawn to men who knew machines, like [The Grapes of Wrath character] Al Joad, who is ‘one with his engine’ and keeps the ‘ancient overloaded Hudson’ running; or Gay, ‘the little mechanic of god, the St. Francis of all things that turn and twist and explode,’ who repairs the Model T in Cannery Row. The ‘Hansen Sea Cow,’ demonic engine in Sea of Cortez, is a major character. Grace notes throughout his journalism make reference to Steinbeck’s cars, usually bestowing the inanimate with very human quirks. A rented Land Rover is ‘a heavy, ugly, high standing truck-like creature with four-wheel traction and a will toward immortality’ (Daily Mail, 7 Jan. 1666:6),” (John Steinbeck: America and Americans and Selected Nonfiction, ed. Shillinglaw and Benson). Steinbeck’s deep interest in finding the appropriate automobile for his specific use culminated with his 1960 tour across America with his poodle, Charley, whose death is sadly noted in our letter. Steinbeck’s journey with his beloved dog was chronicled in his final book, Travels with Charley: In Search of America. For the ambitious road trip he put a customized camper shell on his truck and dubbed it Rocinante (after Don Quixote’s horse). The camper is on view at the John Steinbeck Center in Salinas, California. ********** Our letter indicates that Steinbeck’s interest in such customized vehicles persisted, particularly the Volkswagen Bus, introduced in 1950, which became extremely popular with America’s 1960’s counterculture. The groundbreaking 1959 advertising campaign for the Volkswagen Beetle, with the tagline “Think Small,” was created by Bill Bernbach after Gossage turned down the Volkswagen account. ********** Our letter seems to point to the nascent conflict in Vietnam, the “war we pretend we aren’t fighting,” which by 1962 had been going on for seven years and lasted until 1975. Popular opinion against the undeclared war grew and also characterized the decade. ********** Written from Steinbeck’s summer home in Sag Harbor, Long Island where, away from the distractions of Manhattan, he spent much of his summer months writing The Winter of our Discontent and Travels with Charley. ********** Folded with an irregular edge at the top right. In very fine condition. With the original envelope.
