MAN RAY - Original vintage photogravure

Lot 531: MAN RAY - Original vintage photogravure

by Stanford Auctioneers

July 26, 2014, 8:00 AM PST

Phoenix, AZ, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: Man Ray (American, 1890 - 1976). "Le Violon d'Ingres". Original vintage photogravure. 1924. Printed 1933. Signed "Man Ray" and dated in the negative, lower right. One of Man Ray's most famous images, depicting Kiki de Montparnasse. "Man Ray was an admirer of the paintings of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and made a series of photographs, inspired by Ingres's languorous nudes, of the model Kiki in a turban. Painting the f-holes of a stringed instrument onto the photographic print and then rephotographing the print, Man Ray altered what was originally a classical nude. He also added the title Le Violon d'Ingres, a French idiom that means "hobby." The transformation of Kiki's body into a musical instrument with the crude addition of a few brushstrokes makes this a humorous image, but her armless form is also disturbing to contemplate. The title seems to suggest that, while playing the violin was Ingres's hobby, toying with Kiki was a pastime of Man Ray. The picture maintains a tension between objectification and appreciation of the female form." (Courtesy: Getty Museum). See: www.manraytrust.com, pg.8. 12V COMPLETE WORKS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN c1905 Antique American History 16th President Civil War Plates Decorative Binding Biographical Edition

Lot 6004: 12V COMPLETE WORKS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN c1905 Antique American History 16th President Civil War Plates Decorative Binding Biographical Edition

by National Book Auctions

July 27, 2014, 12:00 PM EST

Ithaca, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $100 - $250

Description: Title: Complete Works of Abraham LincolnAuthor: Abraham Lincoln - Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He successfully led his country through a great constitutional, military and moral crisis - the American Civil War - preserving the Union, while ending slavery, and promoting economic and financial modernization. Reared in a poor family on the western frontier, Lincoln was mostly self-educated. He became a country lawyer, an Illinois state legislator, and a one-term member of the United States House of Representatives, but failed in two attempts at a seat in the United States Senate. After opposing the expansion of slavery in the United States in his campaign debates and speeches, Lincoln secured the Republican nomination and was elected president in 1860. Following declarations of secession by southern slave states, war began on April 12, 1861, and he concentrated on both the military and political dimensions of the war effort, seeking to reunify the nation. He vigorously exercised unprecedented war powers, including the arrest and detention without trial of thousands of suspected secessionists. He prevented British recognition of the Confederacy by skillfully handling the Trent affair late in 1861. He issued his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and promoted the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, abolishing slavery.Lincoln closely supervised the war effort, especially the selection of top generals, including commanding general Ulysses S. Grant. He brought leaders of various factions of his party into his cabinet and pressured them to cooperate. Under his leadership, the Union set up a naval blockade that shut down the South's normal trade, took control of the border slave states at the start of the war, gained control communications with gunboats on the southern river systems, and tried repeatedly to capture the Confederate capital at Richmond. Each time a general failed, Lincoln substituted another until finally Grant succeeded in 1865. An exceptionally astute politician deeply involved with power issues in each state, he reached out to War Democrats and managed his own re-election in the 1864 presidential election.Editor: John G. Nicolay - John George Nicolay was a German-born American biographer, secretary of US President Abraham Lincoln and member of the German branch of the Nicolay family. In 1838, he immigrated to the United States with his father and attended school in Cincinnati. He later moved to Illinois, where he edited the Pike County Free Press at Pittsfield, and became a political power in the state. Then he became assistant to the secretary of state of Illinois. While in this position, he met Abraham Lincoln and became his devoted adherent. In 1861, Lincoln appointed Nicolay as his private secretary, which was the first official act of his new administration. Nicolay served in this capacity until Lincoln's death in 1865. Shortly before his assassination, Lincoln appointed Nicolay to a diplomatic post in France. After the death of the President, Nicolay became United States Consul at Paris, France (1865-69). For some time after his return to the United States, he edited the Chicago Republican. He was Marshal of the United States Supreme Court (1872-87). In 1881, Nicolay wrote The Outbreak of the Rebellion.Nicolay and John Hay, who had worked alongside Nicolay as assistant secretary to Lincoln, collaborated on the official biography of the 16th President. It appeared in The Century Magazine serially from 1886 to 1890 and was then issued (1890-94) in book form as ten volumes, together with the two-volume "Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln." The resulting biography is a definitive resource on Lincoln and his times. Nicolay and Hay also edited Lincoln's Works in twelve volumes (1905). Finally, "Personal Traits of Abraham Lincoln" was published by Helen Nicolay in 1912.Nicolay was a founding member of the Literary Society of Washington in 1874, according to a book about the society written by his daughter, Helen Nicolay. Both Nicolay and Hay were members of long standing in the society. (Biography courtesy of Wikipedia), John Hay - John Milton Hay was an American statesman, diplomat, author, journalist, and private secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln. Hay's highest office was serving as United States Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt.Publisher: Francis D. Description: Title: The Lost Colony: An Outdoor Play in Two Acts (with Music, Pantomime, and Dance)Author: Paul Green - Paul Eliot Green was an American playwright best known for his depictions of life in North Carolina during the first decades of the twentieth century. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his 1927 play, "In Abraham's Bosom." It was also included in Burns Mantle's "The Best Plays of 1926-1927."Publisher: The University of North Carolina PressCity: Chapel HillYear: 1937Printing Information: Signed EditionBinding Style: HardcoverPagination: xi/138 pagesWidth: 6" Height: 8.25"Book Details: "In 1587 Sir Walter Raleigh sent a band of colonists to Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina. Three years later when John White returned to Roanoke Island the colony had disappeared without leaving a trace.Paul has taken the known facts and traditions of this romantic mystery and by the creation of character and the evocation of atmosphere breathed life into a shadowy legend. Through poetry, song and dance pantomime he has wrought out a fabric of enduring beauty. But the form is not that of pageantry only. This is a play. The character are real human beings, great and poor, grotesque, brave or pathetic; and the story of their struggle mounts into exciting and moving drama." (From front flap of dust jacket)"The Lost Colony" is a musical play based on historical accounts of Sir Walter Raleigh's failed attempts to establish a permanent settlement, the Roanoke Colony in the 1580s on an island in what was part of then the Colony of Virginia. Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paul Green "The Lost Colony" marks a shift in Green's work from more traditional forms of drama to focus on the creation of large-scale outdoor musical spectacles he termed "Symphonic Dramas." "The Lost Colony" has been performed since 1937 in an outdoor amphitheatre located on the site of Sir Walter's original colony on Roanoke Island in the Outer Banks region near present-day Manteo, North Carolina. As of 2012, it is the United States' second longest running historical outdoor drama, behind "The Ramona Pageant."
