French Louis XV Style Antique Giltwood Settee Sofa, 19th Century

by Silla Fine Antiques

Ships From: Shippensburg, PA US

Description: FINE LOUIS XV STYLE CARVED GILTWOOD SETTEE, Circa the third quarter of the 19th Century Item # 507PPQ22D An exceedingly attractive piece preserved in quite fine condition, this French Louis XV style settee was probably crafted during the third quarter of the 19th Century c. 1860-80. The carved frame is exquisite, the crest with a fully developed rocaille flanked by crisply executed flowers that sprawl away from the motif. Acanthus wraps the shoulders of the frame which remains just gently molded as it flows into the open arms. The thick and very comfortable down stuffed cushion and back are upholstered in a relatively recent fabric that remains free of any noteworthy blemishes or flaws. The entire settee rests over cabriole legs with floral carved knees and gently scrolled French toes, the apron of the settee vigorously carved with repeating floral arrangements. Most attractive though is the surface; the frame appears to be walnut, over which a red bole was applied followed by a thin layer of gesso before the entire frame was gilded. The wear is simply delightful - crackling, rubbing and general use have revealed all dimensions of the surface and result in a beautiful juxtaposition between the sheer perfection of the precise form with it's delicate carvings and the worn nature of the gilding. This is a remarkably comfortable and endearing piece you will certainly cherish in your home for a lifetime. Measurements: 26" D x 41 3/4" H x 69" W; 19 1/2" high to seat (approximately)Condition Report: Extensive gilt loss to all surfaces with exposed gesso, bole and walnut throughout. Some joint separations, though the settee remains sturdy and strong throughout. Upholstery in "excellent" condition with only most minor wear. Chip loss where right arm meets the back. A very fine piece.
